Wanted / PE 175 headlight and mesh Guard
« on: May 27, 2015, 10:55:28 am »
Long shot I know but trying to source a good headlight and the mesh guard for a friend's PE175 I've been helping him out with. I'm sure the 250 & 400 would be the same. There is an average one on USebay but the seller won't budge from his $70aus postage. Any help would be appreciated.

Tech Talk / Honda XL350 rear sprocket query
« on: April 21, 2015, 06:50:57 pm »
I have my father's very original 76  XL350 which I did a bit of work on a while back so that I could put club rego on and ride it around once in a while. I only ride it on the road and the stock 48/15 sprocket combo makes the poor old girl sing too much for my liking. When I did the sprockets I changed it to a 520 chain setup. However now that I'd like to get a smaller rear sprocket say around 42T there isn't any joy. Local bike shop told me their supplier only stocks the 48T. I emailed XLInt in the USA and they can post one out but makes the whole exercise unviable due to the Aussie dollar. I am hoping someone on here might know of a solution. I know Chain Gang could make one but trying to find a cheap alternative if possible. Maybe another model Honda or make of bike could be modified to suit. Open to suggestions.

It was eventually proved that fitting an oil cooler as per the XR400 was much more efficient in keeping the temperature lower.

I think the main issue with mine is that the kick lever swings down and contacts the back of the footrest bracket. It has done it since new. Not sure whether they all do it ? But I reckon this is why the knuckle is short lived.

That is a common problem. KX's & KDX's of the same era all do it. Since I wrapped a piece of inner tube around the kick starter in the spot where it connects with the foot peg bracket I have never had a problem. It softens the blow. Had some mates breaking the knuckles too until they used this trick.

Contact GMC who is a member here. (Geoff Morris Concepts) He makes them and does a great job. I have one of his pipes and mufflers on my 82 KX250

Tech Talk / Re: How do you stop aluminium fork tubes cancer ?

I see this quite a bit on jobs I do for people. It is the clear coat breaking down. It also happens on engine cases. Alloy cases on the early Hondas are a perfect example. Once the moisture is able to get under the clear coat it starts to oxidise the alloy. As already mentioned the clear coat has to be removed and alloy cleaned/polished. Either then keep the polish up or re clear coat them. As they say nothing lasts forever
