Hi all, been a while since I've been on here, always seem to be head down arse up lately.
If not trying to catch up on orders I'm trying to catch up on emails,

Still haven't updated my website for quite a while and have jigged a couple dozen systems that I haven't put up yet however you can check out my current build list which are listed on PDF's on my website;

Choosing filler rod can almost be as bad as asking what 2 stroke oil to use ???
There are few different filler rods you could use but the short version is you will be okay with 5356

As to what alloy the arm might be is a good question, I have welded 6061 & 6060 components with 5356 and had them anodised without problems however I once repaired a early Suzuki arm with 5356 filler and also had it anodised however the bits that I welded came out in ugly dark blotches which suggests to me they aren't 6061

You will need to remove the anodising well clear of the section to be welded then your dilemma will be do you leave it like that or remove all the anodising so the whole arm looks the same. Any attempt to re anodise it will likely produce blotches as above so I would recommend a clear coat.
Also try not to put too much heat in as most structural alloys gain there strength from heat treating and too much heat will rob strength.
Use a heat gun to put some mild heat in then use high amps so you can get in quick to the area and avoid heat soaking the whole arm

do you have Hilly's (Andrew Hill) contact?  i am sure he will help out, he is on Facebook

Haven't had a chance to catch up with Hilly in a long time now (or you),
I don't do that Facebook thing, I'm flatout keeping up with emails as it is!

If someone can tell me the distance from the mounting bolt to the front of the muffler spigot would be a help

I could send you a cartoon of one ... would that be close enough?

That could work well thanks as your talents would be a huge improvement on a poor fitting silencer that can be considered a bad joke :o

Hi all
I'm rejigging my YZ 400 D / E exhaust at the moment and I would like to get the chamber / muffler join in the correct position.

Can anyone lend me a muffler from this model?
Damaged doesn't matter so long as the front spigot and mounts are still correct
I would only need it for a day and can express post it straight back

Cheers,
Geoff

General Discussion / Re: 1975 Suzuki RM125 S

I build a RM125 S 'repair kit'
Its the cone sections with mounts & gussets built to original specs.
It requires the original header section which is made from pressed halves.
If you have a header that's not rusted or molested it should be able to be repaired
Same deal with the small silencer as they can be repaired also

Suzuki / Re: KX 500 Piston in a PE 400
« on: April 24, 2020, 10:16:41 am »
A customer in the States has pistons for PE 400's

"I have 86 and 85.75 mm. With the 85.75 a person would have to fit the rings to cylinder because they only make the rings to 85.5 & 86 mm."

I can put you in contact with him if you like.

4130 Cr-mo can be welded with a MIG, TIG, Arc, Oxy or brazed,
Arc welding thin materials (1.5mm and under) is difficult

I don't believe any of the motorcycle manufacturers used 4130 as they wouldn't want the hassle of having to heat treat all their frame.
Most aftermarket frame builders use 4130 but the Poms also used Reynolds tube.

A forum member had a Maico frame analyzed a few years back and it was much the same as 4130 but with less Carbon.

Carbon is the magic ingredient for making hardened steel

i think i'll just heat and put an s bend in the standard one.... cheers anyway for the replies..

I wouldn't recommend heating and bending a kick start lever as it will soften the material and will most likely bend easy.
