seriously, I couldn't ride out of site on a dark nite :o, my point was given even rider skills, the bikes irrelevant and I don't think new punters on 5 years newer bikes will be hurling themselves into the scrub any faster than us on our older twin shocks ;D

Me and 4 mates had this discussion and tested the theory at a MX and flat track courses. 5 bikes ranged from 1990's YZ125, to '79 CR250, to hybrid XL500 in CR250 frame VMX racer to a 2015 KTM125SX.
All riders did timed laps on each bike. All riders posted different times from one another but almost exactly the same time individually on each bike.
Now, granted, there may be a different result with a top (or fitter) rider on board, but back in the day we were all pretty handy round an MX track. But the rider is in most cases the limiting factor in terms of speed. The biggest consideration would be the extra damage later model bikes can do to the track. But this is far less of an issue on enduro courses.

OK, so it seems they just call it pre 82 because its easier than calling it drum brake, aircooled, non-linkage, old piece of shit class. Fairy nuff. What is really required is a bit of clarity to prevent confusion. But I guess at our age, someone is always going to be confused  ;D

so if someone would humour me for a minute... are there some evo bikes that dont qualify for evo racing? As in a pre 81 japanese mx'er not qualifying for pre 82?? What the FAQ? Can you run it in another (later) period class? 

I presume there are additional technology rules in play?

Like others I am old and dont give a rats about where I place but simply want to get out there on my favorite old bike and run it as hard as I can.

Fortunately in WA it seems if you are a veteran you can run any bike you like (even moderns) at classic MX events

I campaigned this at meetings around the Waikato and BOP during the 79-80 season (or thereabouts). I picked it up off my best mate who was/is a friend of Peter Ploen. This was Ploen's championship winning RM370A, which he had upgraded with B swing arm and shocks, B fork internals and B ignition. The tank still had the sponsors sign-writing on it as you can see.
The seat is off an RM125 (which always fooled a few people), and I had the front seat mount raised a couple of cm's. The bars were some solid alloy things that were a bit of a fashion at the time.
Probably my favorite bike of all time - and I've had a few. Fast and great handling and steering.
Wish I still had it. My mate tells me it is still in the BOP area and being used.

My dad took me to a scramble just south of Waitara, dont recall the year exactly but cleaning up in all races were sparkling new silver YZ tank strap twin shock Yamahas. Must have been around '71 or '72. The smell of Castrol R and dirt bikes going flat out had me hooked. I would have been around 13 at the time. I, like a few others around here, went to the meeting north of Wellington to watch Gaston Rahier deal to NZ's best on his factory 125. I remember he needed a crate as a step to climb on it and seemed to never sit on the seat. Mind you, the difference between him standing on the pegs and sitting down would have been bugger all. The Dani Pedrosa of dirt bikes. I still have a couple of snapshots from my old instamatic camera from that day.

Just dropped in to say hi and glean some valuable information for my upcoming plans to rebuild a 78 CR250R which I am yet to acquire. A mate owns it in Un Zud so I have to get it shipped to WA. My intention is to build it for use at classic MX events and once I become too old for that (which may be sooner rather than later) I will restore it to concourse. Bikes of this era seem to be getting more rare and expensive by the year so I think it will be a keeper.
I have read with interest (well waning interest actually) discussions around the use of later vintage front suspension but as I am not likely to be going for any national titles at my age, I think tuned stock forks will remain in place. I doubt I will ride it hard enough to notice too much difference. I rode a 79 model a couple of years ago (owned by the same mate who is spotting me this one) and it was perfectly adequate for me. My lap times on the CR could not be bettered when I tried on a 2015 KTM125SX so I think I will be the limiting factor rather than the bike  :)
