That came out very nice...good job!  I'm sure whoever buys it should be happy.  Do you have a thread covering this rebuild?

Well...I'm sure we were referring to using brand name for aftermarket parts not as a motorcycle manufacturer.

Maico / Re: For sale 490 maico engines

81 / 490. Engine.  2100.00
82/ 490.  Engine.   1300.00
79mx frame. 450.00

Wow...do these engines go for that much?!?  I'm not knocking your asking price which I'm sure you sold for close to that.  That's something but I admit that I'm out of touch what bikes/parts/engines go for nowadays.

I too was a regular at Cycle World in St Peters!

My days were from roughly 1973 through 1976 when we moved away.

There are a couple of pictures of me on the Cycle World Facebook page, #181 on a TM100, RM125M, and maybe the RM250 I had then.

That was a great track run by great folks. I'm getting back into the vintage program but have just today suffered a setback (see my post in the Suzuki section!

Maybe we'll run into each other next season.

Pretty cool that you are getting into vintage mx.  I'll look for you next season...keep in mind that I only go to races within 3 hrs of St.Louis.

I like your pictures Mike.
I see more trick swing arms in Maicos now than I did back in the day.

Believe it or not the swing arm on my Maico is the original Thor swing arm made back in '81.  I need to keep an eye on potential cracks since this is one old swing arm.  Don't mean to brag but I still ride this 490 hard.

Speaking of riding it...the past 2 weekends I took this Maico along with my current race bike '03 Honda CR250 to ride at prepped practice at Archview mx.  I'd ride 2 motos on the Honda and one moto on a Maico.  It's kinda cool to receive comments and questions about the Maico and to be able to hang with modern bikes.  One spectator thought there was a helicopter flying around but realized it's the way the Maico sounds.  Now thinking about it...this Maico is older than most riders I rode with.  No wonder why I'd get stares while we were waiting to start off our group.

No problem about thread hijack...that's interesting regarding slower shutter speed.  It sure makes for cool photography.

oldmxracer...thanks.  I have seen one or two Hodaka's around the races.  So it must be Tim and perhaps "the other Andy"!

That's good news knowing that JC lose holding the right to Maico logo and I hope it sticks.  I appreciate having more companies building/selling Maico parts rather than having Canadian Maico being the only business that we all would have to deal with.

Several years ago I bought one item from Canadian Maico (a 490 piston kit).  I decided to return the piston kit due to its piston being heavier than a Mahle piston and he refused to take it back!

That's pretty cool having RM125X.  Like you I used to own one for a couple years since new and what a great bike it was.  Its rear suspension was unbelievable.

I'm Southern Illinois and done a couple of Curtis's races in the past. Great bunch. You St. Louis area? St. Peters was the bomb back in the old daze. I don't post much here, but this board is one of my dailys.

Yes...I'm in the St.Louis area.  I have raced at St.Peters Cycle World back in the late 70's before they closed up due to suburban/business growth.  It was great watching DeCoster/Hannah battle at one of the Trans Am races and outdoor Nationals at Cycle World.

Introductions / Hello from MO, USA
« on: August 31, 2015, 04:01:15 am »
Hello...I just joined and I'm from Missouri, USA.  I currently own two '81 Maico 490.  The 1st since May '82 (moved up to open B class from 125B class) and 2nd since June '86 (used as parts bike).  I race several post vintage motocross races (not the whole series) in +50 Expert and 500cc GP Expert classes in the Missouri Vintage Motocross Series (MOVMX).

I'm embarrassed to say that there's a race today at MOVMX which I skipped since my friends from out of town was visiting yesterday and today.  Anyway there seems to be quite a few knowledgeable folks here and thought it's time to join up after knowing about this forum for years).  I'm looking forward to share riding/racing experience with you guys.

One of these days I'll post photos of myself riding/racing.   It looks like I need to upload photos to a photo website in order to insert here.
