Tech Talk / Re: CR250M ignition problems

It turns out my new replacement coil is a dud, after much head scratching I decided to plug in the old coil and hey presto, I've got spark!! The only problem is once I finally started the bike for the very first time it only ran for 2 seconds and now the engine is seized  :-[ time to pull it all back down again... I'm starting to think this bike is cursed!

I have finished building the bike with new points, new coil, new plug but can't manage to get any spark! I've checked the wiring diagram and although I have wired my bike correctly, I don't fully understand how the electrical system is supposed to work. Does anyone have any tips for figuring out where the problem is?

So I ended up buying a NOS pawl and installed it tonight but the kick starter still slips  :(
I guess the next step is to replace the inner/outer pawl housing and see if that helps?

Spot on about the pawl, its snapped at the base!

When I pulled the engine down I found a little nub of steel in the bottom of the cases and couldn't for the life of me figure out where it came from... now I know!!

How much do you want for a new pawl BigK?

Thanks for the response, I'll definitely check it out.
I'll let you know how I go BigK, I think the poor thing has copped some abuse over the years, judging by the state of the kickstart lever, I think someone has tried to start it with a seized piston at some point!

Tech Talk / CR250M kick start mechanism
« on: May 03, 2015, 04:41:25 pm »
Hey all,
I have recently finish assembling my rebuilt 74 CR250M engine however when I try to kick it over the kick start slips. If I take the spark plug out the kick start works fine but as soon as there is any resistance from compression it just slips. Ive read that installing a MT250 gear set can help the situation as the gears are a better quality? I've also noticed the shaft coming through the side cover has a bit of play so I might sleeve the side cover, is there anything else I'm missing or am I heading in the right direction to resolve this problem?

Cheers
Chris

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I did look into the BMCC and once the bike is finished I will definitely be joining, it looks like a great club!

Hello,
I'm 25 and recently moved to Brisbane from Sydney, I've spent the past year and a half restoring a 74 CR250M which I inherited from and uncle. I've restored vintage road bikes before (RD250C, H2 750B) but this is my first dirt bike restoration. Apart from what I've learnt while restoring the bike over the past 18 months, I know very little about it. Now that I'm getting close to completing the project, I'm hoping to get some insight on tuning, I also have some questions about shimming the gearbox and installing a stronger kick start mechanism (questions I wish I had asked before re-assembling the engine!!).

Cheers
Chris
