Wanted / DT175A/B/C rear shocks
« on: August 15, 2017, 07:36:48 pm »
As the title says, I'm after a good pair of twinshock DT shocks. The originals on my newly acquired DT175C look like they've spent the last 40yrs on the Titanic.
Cheers guys.

That looks like an H ...G was silver with red stripes, my first real bike ;D

You'd be correct, 4/81 build date. I'd never actually looked at the compliance plate, I just assumed it was a G because my old G had the same tank... lol ::)

Wiseco was what the machine shop got me, so Siezeco it is... Would have preferred a Wossner like they got me for my IT, but them's the breaks. It should be right, I'm only planning on noodling about town, the local state forests and the odd vinduro on it, I don't think it's going to get hot enough to be a problem ;D
It had broken a ring, grabbed it in the exhaust port and dragged it up and down the bore when I got it, the machinist had to take it out to 1mm over (from .25) to clean it up properly. Bore job and piston kit cost me half again as much as I paid for the bike  :o
So, my list of parts now includes a fresh 1mm over barrel, a 67?mm piston kit, crank seals, an air filter and a top end gasket kit. I need to buy a clutch cover gasket (or rob a tube of gasket goop off Dad), then it's time to start cleaning everything up and assembling it. The plan is to have it all back together and run in in time for Cookardinia in September.

All good; it's not a hijack if the conversation pertains to the subject matter ;D

Here's what I'm working with, in all its filthy, Cheng Shit tyred glory. I have everything that isn't on it, aside from the headlight itself (dog knocked it off the bench and smashed it ::) ), taillight unit and one sidecover. The barrel and a new .5mm over Wiseco piston kit are at the machine shop waiting for me to have the money to go pay for the bore and piston kit. Yay for bills and spotty work schedules... ::)

Dent-free pipe and silencer

I'm thinking the seat may need a bit of work...

I'm going to try and find the other sidecover in red/black, and paint this one to match

It needs work, but it's already a mile better than the last one. Everything's there, everything works, it just needs a good bath, a bit of paint and some reassembly. I hope.
It'll get a new top end, a better flowing silencer, a new clutch, crank seals, redone seat and whatever else it needs to get it roadworthy, should be a great little trailbike once it's done. I'm going to try and adapt an AG100 rear carry rack I've got somewhere as well so I can use it for a town bike, maybe a camping bike as well.

I used a short length of radiator hose out of a wrecked VS Commodore Dad's got lying around the farm to seal the pipe/silencer joint on my IT, it's been on there for four years now and hasn't failed yet.

I've got a major soft spot for 79-81 DTs, my first bike was a DT175G. It was thrashed, jumped, stacked into a car, did countless laps of a mate's MX track and went everywhere with the throttle pinned to the stops and just kept on going, until it didn't. One day my faithful, much abused steed had just had enough. I still miss that thing.
So, last year sometime after nearly two years of searching for the right bike, I went and bought another one.

Excuse the awful picture, it's the only one I have of it.

DT175G. Cost me a grand total of $250, was missing the kicker, a few clutch cover screws and taillight lens, needs a top end, crank seals and a seat. Other than that it's complete and in surprisingly good nick.
Plan is to fix it up and use it to get around town offending people. I remember my old one went heaps better when I ditched the stock muffler for an old CR125 one I flogged off a mate, so it might get a muffler, other than that it'll stay pretty well stock.

Honda / XR600 clutch cover bolt/bung
« on: June 07, 2017, 09:00:54 pm »

I lost this bolt from my XR600 on the way to work this morning, noticed it was missing when I pulled up at the accommodation... No bolt, and it had spewed oil all over my boot and the right hand side of the bike. Replaced it with the airbox bolt from just behind the rear brake reservoir and topped up the oil, doesn't seem to have done any damage, thankfully.
My question is, is it just a bung, or does it hold something on in behind the clutch cover?

I worked out that it was standing through the whoops that was killing my hands, I ended up staying seated and just rolling through them in first, found that by doing that I could keep up my admittedly snail-like pace for the whole race rather than having to slow right down and roll everything because I couldn't hold onto the bars.
I'm going to have to look into either lowering the pegs, getting a gripper seat made up or both so I can actually get a grip on the bike with my legs, should help with my hands as I won't have to hang on as tight while I'm standing.

I had four races today, Pre82 all in and 250, the U/45 post classic age race and the single bike entrant race. I was slow, ran dead last all day, got lapped frequently and had an absolute ball doing it. I'll be back  ;D

Well... practice didn't kill me  ;D

I'm having issues with cramping hands, and I'm not much more than a rolling roadblock, but it's fun. Which is all that matters, right? ;D

It was sold to me as a YZ465G/H tank, but she don't fit my IT. 9/80 date code, YZ125G maybe?

My cousin has an XR200, I've noticed it's a lot easier to get the front up on it than my 600. I always thought it was a combination of 104kg over the back wheel and a super short 1st gear lol

I've got a '77 GS550 in the shed, I reckon it'll run if I clean the carbs. Gotta get them out first though, airbox and intake boots are rock hard.

I entered myself in the Bathurst round of the Heaven VMX series (Pre-82 250 and All Powers) so I have a little to do once I get home. Mostly just get it sorted and ready to go, it's been sitting for 18 months behind a pallet of urea and a broken Chamberlain in the machinery shed. I bought my brother's XR600 off him just before he moved over to WA, got it registered easily enough so I've been riding that here, there and everywhere.

I have a few things to do, shouldn't take much though. Heavier fork springs, new fork dust wipers, new kicker and countershaft seals, new clutch/brake levers and an upper chain roller are on the way, I just have to fit all that, clean the dirt out of the shittily repaired but not leaking pipe I have, throw it on, make a front number plate out of an old chemical drum or something, sort out green numberplate decals and race numbers and hope I don't hurt myself come race day... I go to work the day after, lol
