Tech Talk / Cleaning out radiators
« on: December 03, 2014, 08:54:47 pm »
The bike I bought had a bad leaking head gasket, enough for coolant to end up in the expansion chamber (don't know how it ran but it ran ok believe it or not). I have replaced the cylinder and gave it a new top end and runs awesome now. Problem is there was chunks of navy blue crystallised substance throughout the cooling ducts on the cylinder and I have since discover this same stuff has blocked up the radiator cores. Flushing with a hose hasn't worked and I am thinking about soaking the rads in a tub of water with a bit of pool acid.

Anyone else come across this and successfully cleaned the cores?

I just put engine ice in my 89. Looks like the the water pump etc is in pretty good shape. Should I be using something different in my old bike? I assumed it was just a case of coolant was crap back in the 90's?

Not sure if you are willing to separate small parts but I might be interested in the power valve assembly, seat guide bolts that screw into fuel tank and the rear disc guard?

I am chasing the arm that goes up to the power valve if you have one? My has been snapped and welded. I am on the sunny coast also

Bike Transport / Importing from the US
« on: November 16, 2014, 09:43:22 pm »
Perhaps this topic has been done to death on these forums, but here is my experience and advice anyway.

If you are looking at bringing a bike in from the US talk to Darren Cheney 0488 188 827 [email protected]. He provides a hassle free service and a price that includes everything to your door, no surprise taxes or fees when it lands.
I recently got screwed over by a vintage bike shop in the states and Darren cleaned up the mess for me, the shop even stuffed him around causing Darren to incur additional transport costs but he stuck to his word and his original price.
He is a genuine bloke and there are plenty of other forum members that recommend him.

For those who think they can import a bike themselves or get suckered into "cheap" shipping by an overseas bike shop (like me) I provide the following info that I found out, although it was too late for me:

G’day, once the bike arrives in Australia, we will be able to handle the clearance for you. I understand that the shipper has included the Ocean freight in the sale price and will be using our sister company Carotrans.

As I mention of the phone it is imperative that you apply for your import permit ($50) asap to avoid complications when the bike arrives, which could result in storage being charged. If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call

Import application link https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/application_forms.aspx

Australian Local charges

Port Charges per m3
AUD 78.00

Terminal Handling per m3

Customs Clearance/Professional Fees

Then when you go to pick it up be ready to open your wallet up again and pray the bike has been cleaned properly and the crate has been constructed from the correct timber etc...

Yeah they are nikasil. Mine has had an ugly steel sleeve put in it causing a a bad head gasket leak. It's pretty much a throw away cylinder now and I am not a sleeve fan to begin with anyway. I think the 88 cylinder is identical

I am looking at Electrosil for my 89 cr125, I got quoted $440. What brand piston is the best if OEM isn't available? Wossner seems to be the popular choice on these forums from what I have read

Yeah will do. Still got your cr125 project? If I hadn't put a deposit on mine I would of grabbed yours. Would have been a lot cheaper in hindsight lol

G'day

I am a honda 2 stroke fan, went to Conondale Classic Dirt this year and got hooked on VMX. Just got my 1989 cr125 from the states, another ride to add to the family.

Might see you at some events in 2015.

Cheers
Luke

I heard there is a track on Coles Creek Rd, Cooran QLD. Does anyone know who runs it and when it is open? Cheers Luke
