General Discussion / Re: 1987 CR250 oil Ratio
« on: July 10, 2020, 06:37:37 pm »
Funny how nothing has been mentioned about the heat retention characteristics of the various oils.

I was told by an esteemed world class tuner (this is 15 y.o. info) that synthetic oils hold far more heat than mineral oils. The logic being that synthetics are 'plastic' and we all know how hot plastics can get.  The result is more cooked big / little ends.   Mineral oils hold less heat and so 'wash out' the heat more.

Anyone ever heard this theory?

Also, go-kart guys will tell you how small high revving 2 bangers gain better ring seal and more horsepower from a rich oil mix e.g. 16:1

Make sure you stay for a few weeks - those parts will have to go on back order!  ;D ::)

Wanted / Re: Wanted: 19" alloy rim with 36 spoke holes
« on: April 03, 2019, 08:56:50 am »
No worries Joe.  i went through a similar thing many moons ago when I up sized my sons TY80 to a big-wheel.

I think I ended up using a chrome steely (to keep original look as much as anything else, and it may have been 32 hole?).

Hi Joe, i had a look through my pile of shit that I'm hoping somebody else will want, and only came up with a 19 x 1.85 x 36 hole gold alloy. I think it may have been a rear rim??  But my daughter is travelling to Bendigo in the morning!!  ;) ;D

May be a couple of weeks too late, but Aldi had garage floor paint for sale about 3 weeks ago.  Should be good quality and cheap. Maybe some stores have stock left still??

General Discussion / Re: Sciatic nerve
« on: August 19, 2018, 01:12:05 pm »
The stretching is good as it helps any tight muscle.

Has anyone tried acupuncture? (not dry needling, that's different)

I just visited an acupuncturist who fixed my tight back muscles in one day! He said with sciatica, the problems are often not in the spine but in the bum muscles. He told me a story of a guy he fixed who still had sciatic nerve pain after 5 years of seeing heaps of specialists and having operations on his spine to ease the nerve. The problem was in his bum.

One of the many things acupuncture can do is release tension deep down in knotted up muscles. From now on before going the massage route I will be giving acupuncture a go, and its a whole lot less painful than deep tissue massage!

General Discussion / Re: Broadford Bike Bonanza 2018
« on: April 23, 2018, 09:42:47 pm »
Things are going seriously off the rails if they even contemplate modern bikes at this event. It would just be a cheap and misdirected attempt at grabbing extra money – which wouldn’t happen anyway and just turn off more vintage riders to boot!

The BBB is a huge money spinner and both MA (promoter) and MV (property owner) need to get their shit together to ensure each gets their fair cop (unlike dodgy goings on in years past). This event deserves a concerted effort from MV to make ALL tracks primo to ensure its longevity as an event for ALL riders.

Fix the problem and they will come. This track could be made into what everyone wants for this event and at no extra cost, it just needs some careful management and a little help from volunteers and riders.

From the posts so far the problems have a common theme:- Wet patches where the sprinklers are; Water run-off collecting at the bottom of hills making mud holes; Dry patches in between; Using sprinklers between sessions to stop dust to appease complaints from Road Racers: butt clenching downhill jumps etc.  There are several positives though – the dirt even when compacted can take water reasonably well; and it seems that the current method of track prep is working and well accepted by riders (at least in the sections where the optimum amount of water was applied)

I have ridden Broadford at MX events and past BBB’s. Having over 30 years experience building and prepping State and National standard MX tracks I’ve seen it all.  The hilly terrain of Broadford is fantastic for a MX venue but the ground also makes for a challenge with track prep, e.g. water collecting at the bottom corners, the hills being unsafe for water trucks etc.

The extra effort required to make the MX side of things a ‘must ride’ event for 2019 would be bugger all.  If I were running it I would ensure that:
1/ Pre event track prep continue similar to existing. No deep ripping, just 'dressing' up.
2/ Sprinklers be monitored night before to ensure NO excess run-off running down hills creating bog holes.
3/ Dig a few run-off channels with bobcat just before the bottoms of the hills to catch any water run-off to alleviate bog holes (just in case guy operating pump has one too many beers before turning pump off!)
4/ Also on the night before hand water the dry bits not reached by sprinklers! This is easy but the most important bit! Could be done by the riders, only a one or two stubby job by half a dozen guys and it would be done! Do this and most of the issues will no longer be issues.  No more wet-dry-wet. No more dust from the dry bits (which are the reason people complain).
5/ Knock the top off any gung-ho jumps to make it pleasurable for everyone to ride.
6/ Next day during the riding sessions have the riders / flaggies go out and hand water BEFORE dust becomes an issue. If there is one thing I learned over the years it is water only leaves the ground if it is let dry out – if you keep a light sprinkle on top BEFORE the moisture leaves, the track will remain primo!
7/ Create a second flatter track for pre 78 bikes that one water truck could manage (one operater)

There are plenty more things that could be done to make the Broadford track awesome but the above are all very achievable with current resources.

I always loved the offroad form of racing - part of the challenge was finding the best lines.  That guy way on the inside was certainly up to the challenge! WTF  :o
Sorry, back to topic.

General Discussion / Re: Thumpernats.
« on: February 27, 2017, 10:21:12 pm »
Yes. The same year the promoter decided to remove Barrabool from the series. The thinking seemed to be that deleting the best round from the series from '96 to '01 (and the one that catapulted the Thumpernats to stardom) would somehow improve the brand.

Sponsors jumped ship like fleas from a dead dog. Excuses were given, but that's all they were.

The 2001 Barrabool round was the biggest ever Thumpernats event. The track area was huge but the carpark was 3 times bigger!  300 riders, 4,500 people.

Next year zilch! Go figure. Might have had something to do with the club making too much money? Sad because if it had run for a few more years the club would have been in a position to buy the property before all the bullshit took over.

General Discussion / Re: Licence fees
« on: January 11, 2017, 10:04:06 pm »
although it is for the financial year ending 2013 (last I could see) the MA reports show where the licence fees go and what was spent on insurance - would still be about the same "ratio" (from about page 30)

 http://www.ma.org.au/fileadmin/user_upload/Documents/Board_reports/MA_Ltd_Consolidated_Accounts_2013_FINAL_Signed.pdf

And look for the legal expenses spent (wasted >:() on Barrabool (at page 36) crikey - any bush lawyer could have told them no-one was gonna' let them go from the long standing reasonable club useage to a full on motorcycling track open heaps more - what were they smokin?

Thanks Gippslander, that report is interesting - but shows only a portion of the real legal costs wasted (as you say) on Barrabool. There were also legal costs associated with fighting residents in 2010, 2011 and 2014 with total costs wasted approaching more like $1.5M.  Absolute waste on a fight that was never winnable.  >:(

Yours truly sat down with the then CEO and MA solicitors presenting them with an exit plan for MA that would have saved 1/2 a $mill in further legals, seen Barrabool continue (with possibly another second new track opening in Geelong), all with MA looking like the good guys.  An easy out.  So what did they do? The idiotic decisions made are now set in history. Take note of the Directors at the beginning of that report - and the CEO - all responsible  >:( :'(

Sorry for the hijack, but any chance to dispel the untruths about Barrabool and I'm in! For the record, despite the Barrabool land now sold, the club still hold legal existing use rights for motorcycling until the END of 2017! Theoretically, if the new owner wanted motorcycling to continue, then 2017 is the only year it can happen!

Tech Talk / Re: Who can get dents out of my expansion chamber

Bloke i knew used water.  Plugged ends, filled pipe with water and applied heat sparingly.  Good method for smaller dings.

Was relatively safe  - but you wouldn't want to melt the metal with high pressure steam behind it! He always used caution and full cover safety gear!
