Does the 500 share the same rear hub as a 250?

General Discussion / Re: Broadford Bike Bonanza 2018

I ask the question only out of interest. I see a lot of Pre-95 bikes however multiple bikes seem to be owned by the same rider. Having lots if bikes at an event doesn't pay the running costs, multiple entries do. Build the right classes, provide the right environment and utilize the right track and you cant loose. This seems to be getting missed.

Its not just Bonanza and the track, its vintage MX in general. The biggest class at the moment in victoria is pre 95.
That track is hard work and all the older generation are moving into something a bit easier on the body..vinduro or dirt track etc..
 its as simple as that
Interested to understand, is Pre-95 seen to be the biggest class because it has the most bikes at the event/meeting (or) the most entries, they are two very different things.

John,
Broadford MX track always has been and will continue to be a pain in the butt to prepare and maintain over the course of a weekend for racing/riding. The people that are tasked with maintaining it are up against the elements all year round. When it’s wet it’s a mud fest, when it rains heavily any good soil or conditioning on the top of the track is washed away, when its dry its rock hard and dusty and when you water it with sprinklers it’s over watered in the wrong spots and turns the dirt into sticky clay. The Bonanza is meant to be a showcase of motorcycling from day dot to 1990 along with showcasing the facility itself. When HBBB first started the MX numbers were massive and year on year since it has dwindled to where there wouldn’t have been more than 20/25 riders using the track at any one time this Easter just gone, WHY? I understand that it not all about the track, camping, facilities, etc. all have a part to play, but why is the MX side of the Bonanza not growing or as popular with the rest of the disciplines. At a guess there would have been more Enduro bikes at the event this year than MX bikes (I may be wrong)

Hit & miss if the mx track is going to be rideable.

The way that the sprinklers are set up do nothing but destroy the corners with deep mud/bog holes. Track came good in the arvo on both days but only a single line for the most part. Its a tough gig to maintain, but i'd prefer the dust to mud. Issue is that the road circuit guys don't run air filters so the 1st sign of dust coming their way and there whingeing.

Do a search on this forum. Both Rusty and myself have done the later model conversion on the air cooled KX500's. the main difference between the kick starters is the fixing method to the shaft.

Looking to understand if there is anyone travelling from Tasmania to the Bonanza this Easter, or for that matter Melbourne any time soon. Thanks, Rod

Suzuki / Re: What chain adjusters for DG swingarm?
« on: October 02, 2016, 09:36:36 pm »
Had the same issue. Went down to the local wreckers and ratted through their boxes till I found a pair that fitted. I then filed out the holes to take the Suzuki axle supports, works like a treat.
But remember DG arms are miles off for alignment. You'll need to disregard the marks in the swing arm and align the sprocket with a strait edge or a laser aligner.

General Discussion / Re: Is a 85 RM disc front end legal on a 84 RM250??
« on: January 29, 2016, 10:50:07 am »
No quick answer here as it depends on what the front end has come from.
If the front end is from an 84 or earlier Kawasaki/Honda then YES you can use it. If the disc front end is from an 85 Suzuki (or other make) then NO you can’t use it even though it’s a 43 mm unit which is almost identical in specification to the Honda and Kawasaki units.  As the Suzuki 84 drum & 85 disc fork diameter was 43mm they interchange easily along with 43mm units as previously noted.

If it’s a Suzuki front end it will more than likely have a gold rim. Other than that check the date stamping on the rims to give you a rough clue as to what year the front end is. Typically anything with a date stamp around August/September 1984 would belong to an 85 specification bike.

The Suzuki 84 TLS 43mm front end has become very rare (& expensive) as owners attempt to return their 84 bikes back to original specification, particularly the 250 & 500’s where a disc front end was used to get better brakes back in the day.

eBay Finds / Re: 1993 VOR 550 ridden by Joel Smets
« on: January 12, 2016, 11:08:34 pm »
Don't know my VOR's well but its a 98 model (according to the VIN). Joel rode for Vertemati up to 93/94 which later became Vertemati Off Road or VOR as we now know it.

Joel won his 1st world title in 1995 on a Husaberg.

General Discussion / Re: Nylon cable guide rings
« on: August 05, 2015, 10:18:17 pm »
I bought a metre length of yellow nylon (could have used white) from the local bearing shop and made up 20 or so on the lathe, took minutes once i got the tool set up. Over the years i have given them all away save for a couple that i have as spares for my own bikes. If you've got access to a lathe it's piss easy.

General Discussion / Re: Guy Cooper collection. Nice video.
« on: July 16, 2015, 01:10:13 pm »
Wasn't covered in this video, but Guy spent a bit of time with Husaberg and was a big signing for Husaberg in the mid-late 90's. Whilst the video focussed on his championship years, I'm surprised that he doesn't have one on display.
