Compliance plate says 7/84, forks are conventional and have WP embossed on them, it has a headlight
- I know nothing about garden tractors.
if it was a Maico I'd keep it.

KTM / 84 KTm 250 enduro

KTM people,
I have ended up with a complete basket case 84 KTM 250 gs?.

It has-:
7/84 build date.
Complianced frame
WP front forks- look in OK condition- some rust marks at 10'travel position.
Both wheels also look OK but spoke nipples will probably will never move.
Complete plastics- but oxidized
carb missing- barrel will need nikasil redone- piston U/S
One radiator ok- second bent- not sure of watertightness
Overall the whole bike is well worn- (putting it politely.)

Located Gold Coast region- pick up is best alternative- shipping would be difficult- I would like it all gone together.
Does anyone want it? Is it worth anything?

I am between mobile numbers- so if you supply your number I will ring you.

Maico / Re: Another 81 question
« on: January 11, 2011, 08:30:23 am »
1981 490 manual gives fork rake as 27.5 degrees- Manual actually shows 'rake' as 62 degrees and 30 seconds from vertical which is the opposite to what we deem conventional but still 27.5 degrees.

Maico / Re: Can someone weigh an 81 490 for me?
« on: October 13, 2010, 09:02:40 am »
- given the following disclaimers-
 1) the bathroom scales used are of unknown accuracy but "seem" close to correct
 2) bike is fitted with a Husky WR silencer and Db Snorkel- probably around 1kg extra weight over the rear
 3) bike is otherwise standard except for later bars and wide footpegs
 4) bike was totally dry of fuel but full of oils
81 490 weighs 55kg at rear and 50 kg at front- for the sake of comparison a 2003 KX500 weighs out at 55kg front and 55kg rear- similar constraints apply to this reading as well.
Logically fuel load would split around 75/25 front to rear on top of this.

Tech Talk / Re: Inlet manifold length
« on: November 26, 2009, 08:15:15 am »
whilst I agree with Mr. Lozza that there is no real "simple" formula that is effective it is suggested that 90/rpm(in 1000s) can be used for a four stroke inlet manifold length (result in inches). Likewise other sources state 84000/rpm for the same calculation.
This "length" is from the intake valve head thru to the end of the carb.
This then needs to be balanced against port/tract diameter, divergent angle of the tract, which pulse you are using etc. which all leads back to Lozza's statement that there is no easy formula. Suck it and see appears to be the most effective method.

If you go tp either of Luke1961's Skydrive sites there is a Sudco Mikuni Manual that we posted there recently.
Whilst it won't address specifically a Montessa 250 it does give baseline specs for various bikes plus detailed listings of just what jet/needle/etc is richer/leaner etc because they are not logically sequential.

The above Link is given direct in a posting called Sudco Mikuni Manual in Tech Talk from November 12 2009

Yes it is/was pretty loud- Arthur Blizzard kicked me off the track at Oran Park a long time ago because he reckoned it drowned out every other bike on the track at a road race meeting. Something to do with the Waggot can grind I think.
Where did you see it?

Yes- still have it - it even still goes- stirred the neighbours up yesterday with it but I had a really serious 4th gear flip out on it a few years ago where all the planets must have aligned just right and it just kept on end for ending for what seemed like to be fore-ever.  It ended up with rear sub frame torn off, front down tube cracked at bottom engine mount, seat and tank destroyed, bent forks and pretty much every thing else bent or wrecked. So it all got repaired but I think the frame is now too old for any sort of serious usage.
It had semi legal NSW rego till about five-six years ago.

Gentlemen and Lady(ies),

I have been a visitor to OZVMX for a few years now and finally got around to registering. I am constantly amazed and impressed by the diversity of the membership and the knowledge base that exhibits itself amongst the contributors.

I’m just past half way to the telegram from the queen (do they still do that?) but I learnt to ride on a Honda CT90 ag bike- them bought an ex short circuit AJS350 as a 14 year old ( this was just pre- mini bike days) them built up an A7 BSA paddock bike (after the AJS spat its second gearbox)and finally got into Japanese bikes via a DT360 Yamaha. Had a succession (short succession when I hear of the collections of some members) of MX and trail bikes past that (even a couple of road bikes but that’s really all too scary now) including a 75 360 Husky that became probably the first Australian Aberg replica in 1979- (fabricated from pictures in American Dirt Bike magazine when Abergs first prototype hit the tracks.) Still have that one- a little bit sad in the frame department now- it had one too many throw aways.

Did a bit of MX, Enduros and road racing on MX bikes then gave it all away when I “grew up” and just did social stuff since then. Currently have a nice original 81 Maico 490 MX, a pristine if not totally standard wide ratio 81 490 Maico that resides in my lounge room, the “Aberg” Yamaha and from a moment of utter madness a Montessa Cota 348.

I live in SE Queensland but currently work all over Australia pretty much where ever the airline ticket takes me every second weekend which means that despite having started trying to do QVMX rounds probably 2 years ago now I always find myself somewhere else every weekend and it is really not viable to do at the moment.
