Now that, MIckD, is a great story!  If there is one thing I really detest its a crooked copper, I helped some into Goulbourn gaol in a previous life, they were not happy but DID deserve it!

Hi MickD,

I went into this issue a bit late last year with both the RMS/RTA and a couple NSW HWP blokes. At that point they say they had never heard of anyone being booked for a non aust standard visor as they use tinted ones too, the issue is the helmet importers nor the manufacturers see the need to have their tinted visors tested and certified, Shoei for example say their tinted visors and clear are the same construction but with a tint added and do not recommend them for other than off road use. BUT as far as UV rays CLEAR and TINTED reduce the amounts passing through at the same rate, so whether you use tinted or clear makes no difference (this is Shoei), I have now switched to a clear visor for everything but am using light sensitive prescription glasses for the one eye I have that still works.

I have a couple of mates that have been chipped by the HWP for tinted visors and they like to infer they were booked for it, BUT  they have NOT.  I agree knocking someone off for a non approved accessory (tinted visor or camera) is piss poor though. On the camera issue I spoke to my wifes surgeon regarding what a camera would do, she, the doc, reckons WE WOULD BE MAD to fix anything to the outside of the helmet at is might provide a leverage point in a crash and increase the chance of neck injury, although once in explained that some would be fixed in place with a light adhesive she thought it ok, suffice to say that the first person I actually spoke to who has a camera mounted (mx rider) he has drilled and screwed his camera mount on as he said the adhesive never held and camera is expensive blah blah blah etc!  For me, camera never, tinted visor i'd wear and not worry about the cops, its like anything, society dreams up and allows laws, you do the "crime" and pay the fine and move on OR test it in court, I have done both ways and have won/lost both ways.

On the UV bit a lot is deflected simply by adding a Perspex visor in the first place, Shoei and Aria as example then add a treatment to their visors in the mix, this treatment has a similar affect to that used in auto glass (modern stuff not the old) "green" side and rear glass reduced uv transmission to over 87%, windscreens and sunroof glass is 90%+ etc, normal clear glass is some cars in Aus is only 50%+ reduction, do some reading on it via the standards marking on the glass in cars and the stamping number on any Aust standard clear visor, interesting reading.

Cheers,

Hi Lewis,

understand mate, at least you tried, give him one last call, don't accept a brush off, explain you have been dealing with them for years and ask again to speak with Geoff, if you fail, well bad luck for Geoff I guess, he should be keeping closer tabs on his workers.

His Mum's "bed side manner" was really abrupt, Geoff's isn't a lot better but he does know his stuff, its a shame they are not in the '90s (!!!) at least!

This thread is getting better by the hour , Happy New Year Mark .

Hello gents, Happy New Year!

Proven Products or "Ikon" shocks are or were Mormans if I remember correctly, look and act a lot like the Brethren though. I have had a LOT of dealings with them over the years and whilst a little eccentric and sometimes quite abrupt they are usually good guys in the end, well Geoff Lowe, the owner is anyways...AND they have stuff you cant get anywhere else, mostly!

If you have had trouble ring Geoff and INSIST on speaking with him, he will want to help, BUT, be patient with him...like is say a little eccentric but has forgotten more on shocks than most will ever know.

For what its worth I think most good suspension guys are a little different to deal with, seems the more they know the more "different" they are, easy to argue with, most don't like the customer telling them what they want, you are after all going to them, mostly, for their knowledge are we not?

No, I am not related in any way to Geoff Lowe, but I have spent, literally, tens of thousands of dollars with him over the years, mostly car stuff though (Koni) both race and road.

Bike Talk / Re: RM250Z (82) and D (83) frames
« on: November 28, 2014, 10:02:50 pm »

Hi mate, "cushion lever" is also known as "bell crank" and is the rocker arm between the shock top mount and the struts that attach to the swing arm, it pivots on needle roller bearings with a bolt through the centre. Dproject is "the man" on these, I know the rocker/bell crank are different, the shock and struts and swingarm also different, I have owned/raced both models (a LOOONG time ago!) and didn't know the frame was different other than colour, maybe Dproject can throw some more light on it???? Jason??????  Both bikes in good nick are superb, the D is a little slower than the Z but was much easier to ride faster for longer back then

Hi Maurice,

MC250 '81 is 605mm length (23 & 3/4 inches), that's outside leading edge of front pivot to outside of trailing edge of the rear, make sense?

Cant help with the '80 although I have been told its shorter, the '78 Mc400 I have is nearly 50mm shorter from memory.

regards,
Wayne

Geoff,

I rode one way back when, also rode a stocker the same day, both were slow against my '85 Kx 250...go figure! BUT, the 200 versus the 240 - about the same top end, both had stock pipes and same Sydney made after market alloy muffler on them, the name escapes me, anyway, the thing I disliked about the 200 was the lack of torque (relatively speaking), the thing I liked about the 240 was it had a HEAP more torque and similar top end or a bit more than the 200, both were stock other than the muffler and big bore kit, I LIKED IT but liked my Kx a whole lot more even in the bush (go figure again !!) I reckon think Ktm250 versus Ktm300 in same year model and both stock...both make similar horsepower but the 300 makes a stack more torque AND A LOT MORE HEAT!

The 200 with the big bore done right...porting, bigger carb, bigger exhaust header etc would be similar to a HUSKY 240 of the day, nice power and get it all to the ground. The only suspect would have to be gearbox and big end/mains longevity???  125 bottom end aren't they?  Got to speak to Al Tomkins next week so will ask him what he remembers about them , I KNOW he loved the 200 STOCK though, especially the air cooled ones.

GO LOWNDSEY,

Husqvarna / Re: twin shock wr 510's
« on: July 13, 2014, 11:21:19 am »
no! I pulled the forks and front end to bits and half stuffed the collar thread when trying to persuade the head stem to part company with the top bearing. Phils thread repairs saved the day! a few bearings and a set of seals and onto a tune up for the motor..

As to finding out any history of this bike..... chirp chirp chirp. Pelle Grandquist is incommunicado currently and I got a nil response from a husky imports email.. probably no one there to remember these bikes.

never mind, on we go... will continue to  tidy the old girl up and basically restore it to a good condition.

If you want info on them speak with Stefan at R&D Husqvarna in Old Bathurst rd Emu Plains, he "might" be able to put you in touch with Hans Applegren, Hans is THE MAN on Husky.

Been "speaking" with Pelle just last week, he is getting along ok, his words, still having treatment for medical issues (aren't we all!) but doing ok never the less.
