I have used SKF NJ305 C3 ECP bearings for a long time now from SES bearing supplies in Wollongong. I still set them up as per the manual, in regards to the shims, to guarantee that there is not too much side play available with them.
Using these is easier to obtain and cheaper than the three piece magneto bearings, that we cannot seem to get here. Andre does sell them on his Klassiker website though.
The good thing is you can easily split the cases if required.

I have just rebuilt the bottom end of my 81 495 (rod needed doing), and it too had the NJ ECP type bearings fitted. They were still good, but but as i had it apart and its a quick job, i dropped some new one in.

Continual over tightening making it fatigue. You could get them welded, but need someone good.

Good luck with finding those leg lowers.....those forks are hard to come by now.
Its a common problem with these and the leading axle marzocchi forks.

You will find a set of marzocchi 35mm leading axle forks easier on the net.

Track was awesome firko, i enjoyed it. The speedway corner was great! I rode it at a practise a couple of weeks ago and it was very loamy, but Roy and the boys put in a great effort to have it perfect for yesterday!!
Was a great day, except for a major crash in the RD2 second heat of the Pro 450 class. Hope the guys are OK?? Rd2 was cancelled because of this and we moved straight into the finals.

Remember your just going off an engine number stamping...The frame setup will dictate the year model of the complete bike, especially after thirty years and possible engine swap. But yes, the 'Engine' you mention is most likely a '76.

There are cast dials in the cases too. Billy C's cousins 1974 175 (which he has owned since new), has engine casting dates of 1972...

Thats not the engine number, its a part number....

should be  for a 250 , 8-54xxxxxxx or maybe 7-54xxxxxxx  as the engine cases would been on the shelf....

I am running my Ceriani (leading axles) as standard, bought new valve kits from Al B. And they feel nice.
Swingarm, I think i am running oil in mine from memory. Haven't seen any leaks. But will check nearer the end of the year. Changing those bearings is one job i absolutely hate with passion.

The issue you will have is with the triple clamp offset.
You need to run the appropriate set of clamps for the inline forks. The leading axle fork clamps have a smaller offset.
Hence why the Moiseev's pics has extensions out of the frame for turning stops, when compared to the MC5 frame.

Pulled many apart, and have them running on my 81 250 and 495 KTM's.
I have found :

Internal rubber bump stops perished and puts shit in the oil, holding the shim open
General dirt holding the shim open
Broken negative rebound springs that then rubbed causing metal fleck holding shim open
If you use too heavier and oil the secondary pop off spring for the ball bearing will activate all the time affecting rebound.
If you use too smaller jet for rebound control the secondary pop off spring for the ball bearing will activate all the time affecting rebound.

I use a stiffer pop off spring that Thor offered me, and run a heavier oil, after doing this my bikes changed the way they exit a corner on dirt track from the pogo-ing exit to a control exit, ie rebound slowed.
Increasing your pressures will affect the way the compression and dampening.

The good thing is, you can pull these apart in no time at all and change oils/ jets etc easily.

Yep, you can use any sprocket that suits a KTM from 1980 to 2013.... All modern FRONT sprockets fit, they never changed the spline.

On the rear, you will need to order from Al B, or from Andre @ KTM Klassiker.

You can use modern KTM sprockets, either make a spacer to suit, or change the bush out for one from the 541 series engine (80/81/82 250 motors).
That is if you are using the 520 style chain, or are you using 530??

KTM / Re: Shock length for 77 KTM
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:25:02 AM »
I have just rebuilt mine, finding that the shims had been fitted incorrectly previously causing them to fail. Also, the small wave washer that holds the shims against the head had lost tension.
Now I have rebuilt them with another set of shims from spares that i had.
Filled with 10wt oil, and working very nicely.

Test time will be at crawford river classic to see how they handle a beating.

A good link on how to rebuild them : http://www.ducatimeccanica.com/marzocchi2.html

Something else to check is the spring/shim washer setup in the foot valve (#29 on the part list link above). If that has been spring is depressed when the shock is dismantled, the shim inside will move and not seat flush against the inside face. It takes some time to get this back in position, but can be done. I know this from experience...as you will loose dampening...
