Wanted / Down Pipe for an AT1 / CT1 Yamaha
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:24:17 PM »
Hi All

Looking for a down pipe an AT1 -3 or CT1-3. One type was a Torque Pipe (most where up pipes) but any brand would be good.

Seen them in the states but get no replys! (I think the shipping scares them off!)

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / The Passing of TK (Tony Kirby)
« on: December 18, 2010, 01:17:55 PM »
Tony Kirby passed away last night after a hard fight with motor neuron disease.

TK, one time editor of Australasian Dirt Bike and the founder of SideTrack Magazine, had a great following within all spheres of the motorcycle industry. His honesty about various makes and models could get him into hot water or make the bike a huge success. The industry support was universal; from Yamaha's support of the Across Australia Record in 1998 using the new and untested WR400 to Suzuki's support in a number of Australian Safaris including a class win on a DR250.

Despite being a Kiwi, his knowledge of Australia and the australian bush was almost unique.  There would not be a half decent fire trail, interesting single track or back road throughout Australia he hasn't travelled, writtern about or photographed. It could also be argued that he brought trail or adventure riding out of the small time and into a thriving sport. He was instrumental in the formation of the Dual Sport Motorcycle Riding Association (DSMRA), who's aims are to keep riding areas open and to bring like minded riders together.

If you travelled, rode or talked with TK you always received a smile and a dose of his notorious but unique laugh.

I now count every moment I spent with him as lesson on how to live life to the max, just as he did.

His passing was in Newstead near Castemaine in country Victoria. Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet but I will let you know when and where.

Head into the sunset TK and God speed.

Exceptional work Frosty!

If you put the same effort into your apprenticeship you'll make a great tradey!

Just curious about cleaning and polishing the hubs, did you have them cleaned by blasting/chemical or just elbow grease?

Not mine either but was there when it happened and for the autopsy. In 98 Yamaha gave Tony Kirby and his mate two WR400 to cross Australia. Shortly after that run TK was riding it to Victoria with a group of us to the 6 Day. The shift fork had broken locking it in 4th and 5th (at about 100km/h) spliting 4th gog in half. One half ended up under the piston f#@king the top end and the other half stuffed the cases with 3 or 4 holes. Saved the clutch and flywheel. Every thing else ended up in a box and sent back to Yamaha Japan.

Odo was 10001km!

It was certaily a loud bang........

Tech Talk / Re: IT175G conrod same as DT175?
« on: October 22, 2010, 04:19:58 PM »
I'm pretty sure they are the same rod kit.

I'm currently trying to build one motor out of three bottom ends, YZ125E, an IT175F and a DT175F (I think) and the cranks all appear to be the same in all ways. The numbers are different 1G8 on the YZ and IT and then the DT has 3R2.

If you go to the Yamaha Parts list for the IT the part number for the Rod is 3R2. So they are the same.

Here's a cheap one that I was going try in a muck around bike.

Hi Jimson
Not sure about plastic tank. You can put in the YZ or IT gear set! Most of the internals are interchangable with the racer models. Clutch cover is different (Autolube) but again YZ or IT fit.
You could put some better forks and triple clamp. Loose some weight around the bike. Put some good tires on it and have fun.
They are plain reliable and with some simple bits removed, changed or added, just as much fun as that DT1!

Bike Transport / Re: SHERLOCK, South Australia to Sydney
« on: July 27, 2010, 01:27:47 PM »
Thanks Tony

I realise it is out of the way. I was looking for any local knowledge for a transport company. The bikes I'm after have dropped in price and I'm trying to work out what is the limit including transport.

It is all starting to get a bit hard! :-\

Thanks for the input.

Bike Transport / SHERLOCK, South Australia to Sydney
« on: July 27, 2010, 08:43:03 AM »
Hi All

Any idea of what it would cost to get one complete bike and one in parts from Sherlock, South Australia to Sydney (Parramatta) and which transport companies could do it?

Honda / Re: XL500 Gearing for MX & RM Swing Arm mods

Save yourself all the hassel with the swingarm conversion. You'd be better off getting two old XL arms and make one longer one by cutting, welding and painting. Make the new arm the same length as the RM if this mod works as well as you believe it does. It might even allow you to run an 18" honda rear.

As for gearing, I enduro'd an XL500R in '82. I just put the biggest rear sprocket I could find because the knobbies use to make even that gearing pretty tall. (I think it was bigger than 48 teeth on 17" wheel)

Good Luck

Hi All
I too brought a CT3 when I was 17 and rode the wheels off it. Still have it 33 years later. Now also have an AT1 and a CT1 and lots of bits that seem to find there way under my house. Thanks to Nathan S and DG26

When I first got the CT3 a friend not long before me had a CT1 and did all the mods that T&T suggested. No dyno's where I lived but it was definately up there for power. And very fast in a straight line.......

Now I ride (sort of race) the AT1 at Heaven meets. It's fun when, for not a lot of money I'm running around on a pre 70 bike. These bikes sort of cement themselves into your childhood and are still there all these years later.

Yamaha / Re: Old Yammy Price Check
« on: June 05, 2010, 07:13:24 PM »
Hi Paul
You could start at $600. There's not much of a market for the AT / CT series. If the electric start still works and if it was registered it might get $1000. And then if there was no signs rust and the seat base and cover were original and good you might get up to $1200.

It would have to be exceptional to get over that and most aren't, just neat like this one looks from the photo.

Bike Talk / Re: 78 yz 250

It was the "D" with the 5 speed. The "E" and "F" share a few internals and both had 6 speed.

Eg being Pistons for E & F are the same, the D is different. The only thing I can actually find different D, E & F pistons is the ring pin placement.

Anyway, all those models are great fun and as you can see there are a few out there.

Trying to find an e-mail to a guy in Australia that builds DG swingarms for XR,Rm and YZ model mini's. Thanks for any help. I have a 1981 YZ 80, and I am looking for a DG swingarm.

Edmedg

I've got a 250E, great bike but mostly mid and top end power. Still great fun!

Engine number should start with 2K7. Easy to find parts and still plenty around.
