They are different numbers.
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/yamaha/Y-3R4-14401-00-00.html 1980 YZ

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1982/IT465J/AIR%20FILTER/parts.html 1982 IT

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/parts.html Go to this site and put in the year and model. Click the part number which should show you all the the cross over models for that part. The more models the better the opportunity Yamaha still have it in stock. Just for your own benefit, Australian Yamaha parts don't usually have the second set of 00 at the end of the number.

The third link is the the best, you can spend all the money on the Parts list CD but these sites are gold! when it comes to getting numbers to chase.

Good luck

For Sale / Re: YZ125D race bike + project bike + extra bits.

Hi Nathan
Is the "Aftermarket/handmade aftermarket pipe (cone type - unknown brand)." the one we picked on the way home after one of the QLD CD's. The same one that been hanging in your shed since then. If it is then I'll take that at a price to be negotiated.
Also the YZ gear set.

I'll call you tomorrow.

Wanted / Re: Dt250 D/E/F Motor (botom end) with electrics
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:49:34 pm »
Thanks all for the offers and this is what led up to the request.

I have a yz250E and it had a gear box problem. The cases had the typical problem of the day where the chains derailed and fractured the clutch part of the casings. Someone had welded the cases and it all seemed to work ok until now. The welding was done years ago before me owning it. The clutch worked but was not strong. The problem in the G/B is that the seal at the top is distorted and I found that there has been crap getting in there that stuffed the clutch shaft and the bearing.

I restored the YZ just before CD5 and it saw 3 good seasons racing but was buried in the shed when the gearbox played up. At CD 8 I found some 1980 IT250 cases which has 2K7 on one half so I guessed they would work as there was no chain rash around the clutch shaft on the case.

Well a friend wants to race with me so this I started to rebuild the motor only to find that one case is completely different. There's now a fair bit of money tied up in G/B bits and bearings so I checked the the cross over parts and find that the Crank half on the flywheel side is the same as the DT250 and that the ignition system and flywheel are also DT on the 1980 IT250.

You got to love the way Yamaha just use the different parts bins in the warehouse to build bikes in those days.

Anyway, after discussions with the mate, we believe we'll try to mix and match the stator plate from a YZ250 C or D (larger faced stator) to the smaller rotor crank.

So I'll put all the offers on hold thanks if that's OK and see if we can get life back into the old girl with some Eginneerring. If that doesn't work we'll go the DT crank route.

Thanks
Peter B

General Discussion / Re: Cessnock '92..

If you watch the video you will see Paul Edmonson pre jump everything which makes his whole ride flat. Awesome control. Before it all started there was a few teams assembling their bikes at the show ground. Paul Edmonson finished his bike, fuelled it up, started it and proceeded to wheel stand down one of the roads in the show ground changing up gears. He put it down, turned around and wheel stood all the way back then changed down gears to a complete stop in front of the previlion on the back wheel. Stopped it and pushed back inside. He was someone to watch from that moment on!

I think it was at the 6 day that we met AJ for the first time ;). Also met Herby and Billy Pengilly and a lot of other die hards who I see from time to time.

There was also one of the guys working with us from Blayney, who at the end of the 6th day jumped in a ute and drove to WA for the Manjama international MX. The commitment was that it was a 1970 Holen Ute and there was to be 3 of them. But that's a whole other story........ :D

I worked there with Chris Cater and a great crew setting out the special tests before the event and then with the timing company during the event. Great times and many memories. When we did have time off during the event we rode our own bikes to areas on the track and watched, unbelievable.
The 80cc guys doing a sprocket change to get 10km/h on the transports. 30 seconds tops to change!
The ghost riders on very similar bikes lurking in the shadows (Italians mostly)
The pommy bus load of rider pre-walking the tracks, shirts off, bright red from the "heat" and it was 18C.
The pommy bus asking about the green tree snakes. We told them not to worry about the green ones, the browns one get to 6' and as one they shouted "Foorking Hell".
The despair one of the senior team members from one of the European teams when he finished the special test at the quarry after breaking a gear shaft on his Husaberg and finishing the the test in about 20min when normal was 2 or 3 mins. That's after his ghost rider realised what had happened, pulled his out and threw it into grass next to the rider who had no tools and had to wait for those as well.
The great nights at the pub each night.
The frost each morning camping at the show ground. Bloody cold!
And as Firko said, the final motocross, working a corner and flag being rotated to 2 or 3 corners during the day. It was undiscrible the rush and the atmosphere.

Do it again in a Heart Beat!

Yamaha / Re: Yz125d crankcase interchangeability
« on: September 02, 2013, 05:32:32 pm »
Hi Scotty

There are several cases that will fit. The one you have I think is a about the 1980 DT. Any of the case fit from 1977 through to about 1981 but the real Expert is Nathan S can fill in the total range. The DT cases have the neutral switch on top YZ and IT's are blank. Other cases that fit are the IT's from 1977 to 79.

I have a set of DT case I can bring up to the CRC you can have.

Honda / Fitting a Postie CDI to an XL350
« on: August 26, 2013, 08:15:26 am »
A friend has an XL350 with ongoing electrical problems. The spark is erratic at the best of times. Instead of buying stator coils etc he was hoping to replace the old system with something much more reliable. A bit of a search on the net and through previous posts says that a CDI unit out of a Postie bike is the fix so what and how is it fitted. None of the information goes into the How.

Any information would really be appreicated as he is trying to have it going (reliably) for the CRC in two weeks.

Thanks in advance.

Tech Talk / Re: XR 250 Won't run without choke on??
« on: August 16, 2013, 12:25:41 pm »
Blocked Pilot Jet!! Some of the XR's blocked up in the tube leading to the inlet and are not easily cleared. The jet itself may/will appear clear!

Ultrasonic cleaners sometimes cleared the tube. Goodluck.

Smartie

Does it stay locked up with the clutch in?

Check the sprocket nut is tight. End float of the output shaft sometimes allows it to engage two gears.

Otherwise you may have bent a shift fork.

Good luck!

Where are you are located would be a good piece of information.
I have a complete dt125 motor sitting in my shed but unless your in Sydney it is not going to be much use.

Tech Talk / Re: Not vmx but help needed
« on: June 20, 2013, 09:55:06 pm »
The early WR / YZ suffered from sticking valves to valve guides. If they sat for a while they would loose compression. A lot of people put it down to change of brands of oil at oil changes but I won't believe that.
I'd do a proper compression test first. Then I'd check valve clearance etc. After that check valve timing (assuming the chain may have jumped???)

Good luck and let us know what it was.

Make a batch of YZ360A clutch covers and you'll make the first months wages. They would sell all over the world. At a reasonable  price I'd take 2.

Also any for those fancy heads that Firko has stashed away would be nice.

And Nathans right. Honda side covers out of Aluminium and there is your second months pay.
