I think a pwk carb is now legal in the pre 85 class. Is the air striker version legal? A lot of the chinese knockoffs seem to be air strikers. Thanks.

I have them in a couple of my pre '75 bikes (not CRs). I found the recommended settings to be a good starting point and just tweaked them at home between rides. The right spring rate/preload/oil level are basic requirements for a good result too so you do end up with a lot of variables you can (must?) juggle to get a result. Make sure to measure the actual fork travel available when you have the springs out and put a zip tie on the fork tube so you can see how much you use on track.

One of these grabber tools from super cheap is a good idea. As well as making it easy to get the valve out its good for assembly. If the valve goes in crooked they can be damaged. Thread the tool thru the spring, grab the valve and insert the whole lot into the fork as an assembly. They make one with an led in the claw end too.

My 2c opinion re the pre '75 class... go for the simplest option: As a starting point anything that is as per the original manufacturer spec is legal. That way all unmodified bikes are legal, nothing for the happy vintage racer to do in order to compete.

If there is concern about competition across brands perhaps allow competitors so inclined to modify their machine to match a nominated spec. For example a '73 maico (or whatever) could be altered to '74 specs (or whatever).

Those two basic ideas allow both easy access to the class and room for the tinkerers to tinker. You know, same as it was back in the day.  :-)

FWIW the 125 hub does fit in a 500 but it's not the same. The offset is different, I had to make new spacers to get the chain to line up.

FWIW I have a genuine pwk on my '84. I put it on to make it a little easier to start and was surprised at the extra grunt. Big difference.

With the amount of preload you'll need to set the ride height with a 90kg rider my guess is those dual rate/progressive ohlins springs (horrible things imo) will be basically running as 82lb springs, but with tons of preload. I'm 75kg and set of straight rate 80lb springs feels pretty good to me on a '74 husky. :-)

Personally I don't trust replacement ignitions as far as I can throw them, and not just pvl. As far as I'm concerned putting a timing light on them is an essential part of the installation process. Getting it started is one thing, the next is checking the damn thing is doing what you want it to. Sometimes the timing marks seem to be completely random. :-)

Well I'll take a punt. :-)

I haven't used that aerostart stuff but I'm assuming that if there's a spark at the right time then it's at least going to make a pop?? So there's either no spark or its sparking at the wrong time (eg 180 degrees out).

If you take the plug out, put a timing light on it and spin the engine with an electric drill you should be able to see when its firing. If that's correct it only leaves no spark under pressure.

There are those cheap ignition testers on ebay that let you set/adjust a very large gap, to simulate ignition under pressure, but I haven't tried one.

Non slip is good. Some of those paints are diabolically slippery when wet, especially if you have smooth finish concrete. Both my old dogs hurt their hips slipping on a painted floor, even with grit in the paint.
