Tech Talk / 1982 YZ250J Flywheel Puller???
« on: December 24, 2014, 11:10:19 am »
Does anyone know the size of the flywheel puller for a YZ250J.   It is NOT the common 27mm.
It is smaller than a 19mm (smallest I have) and I suspect its a 18mm.   Can't confirm on Ebay etc, and want to make sure I order the correct size / type.

Need to also know the tread direction and pitch.

Mine cant be rewound as they a sealed like the main ignition coil...

Bike Talk / Yamaha YZ250J Stator
« on: December 15, 2014, 04:39:50 pm »
Just brought a 1982 YZ250J for VMX racing.   Rode it for an hour and it was great.
Now it has no spark, and it appears from the ohm readings in the manual, that the stator is faulty.
Extensive Ebay search turned up a new replacement stator, but after I ordered it the supplied advised they are no longer available!   Any suggestions????

Thanks Nathan, by loosing the 2nd shoe, I take it I have to wind in the connecting rod so the 2nd shoe moves away from the hub?

Whats the best way to adjust twin leading shoe front brakes on YZ250J.   I have stripped and cleaned the hub and shoes, but they seem worse!

Just brought a mint 82 YZ250J.   In the day they ran 24:1
If I use a good quality 100% synthetic modern oil, what ratio should I use with 98 fuel?

I am after a RM250 to race socially in VMX events in NZ.
I brought the last new K8 model in 2010, and so are keen getting one of the early ones!
There are several 1981 RM250X models for sale in NZ at the moment.

What do guys think of these?  Or should I try for the water cooled later models?

Tech Talk / KX500B1 replacement carb?
« on: December 18, 2013, 03:45:22 pm »
I have a 1985 KX500B1 with an old original Mikuni VM40 carb that I would like to replace / upgrade due to jetting issues.   Jets / Needles are almost impossible to get and I have had great success with the JD Jetting Red needle on my RM250K8.

I can get a new Keihen PWK 38 Airstriker carb with JD Jetting needles etc from the States, but are unsure if it's a straight bolt on solution?   Or do I need air box adapters etc....

Anyone tried this on a KX500?

Thanks Steve

Introductions / Hello from New Zealand
« on: December 16, 2013, 04:40:41 pm »
Hi guys, just a quick hello from Christchurch New Zealand.
Just got into VMX after years of riding modern dirt, quad and road bikes.
Have imported a 1985 KX500B1 from California, and will be riding it in local VMX events.
Love those 2 Stokes!   Done a couple events so far, but still sorting out the suspect jetting!
