Mad Max Mad Max
The original Mad Max launched the career of one of our most recognised actors, Mel Gibson / Supplied
Sam Worthington, seen here in Terminator: Salvation, is tipped to play the new Max / Supplied
* Sam Worthington tipped to star as Mad Max
* To be filmed in Sydney, Outback NSW
* More than 500 jobs will be created
* Pictures: Relive the Mad Max magic
* New movies, movie news, movie reviews
THE original Mad Max put the Australian film industry on the map and launched the career of one of our most recognised actors, Mel Gibson.
Thirty years on and Mad Max 4: Fury Road is about to restart the local movie industry, being filmed entirely in Sydney and Outback NSW.
The Daily Telegraph reports that work on the film will start immediately, injecting tens of millions of dollars into the economy and creating more than 500 jobs.
There has been no confirmation yet of who will play the role of the Road Warrior but rumours abound it will be Australian Terminator: Salvation star Sam Worthington, with Charlize Theron to co-star.
Much of the work will be done at Redfern's CarriageWorks and there will also be 30 weeks of filming in Broken Hill. It is estimated the whole project will take two-and-a-half years to complete, create 540 jobs and generate countless millions.
Your Say
Gee. I can hardly wait for this one.
The owner of the Silverton Hotel, outside Broken Hill, made famous by Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior said the news was extraordinary.
"This is bloody huge," he said. "Absolutely magnificent. Silverton depends on the film industry, it survives on the film industry, and if Mad Max is going to be filmed here it's going to be just tremendous."
Industry sources said Premier Nathan Rees moved heaven and earth to get the film after Sydney lost the movie version of Green Lantern in an unexpected blow to the local industry.
Producer and director George Miller said NSW had done extremely well to win the project and had put Sydney back on the map.
"Hollywood has cut its production in half. Big movies like Fury Road and Happy Feet are rare and competitively sought after in all the filmmaking regions of the world," he said.
"The production agreements have been a long time in the making and Premier Rees and his team have worked like Trojans to ensure this substantial investment comes into this country.
"Not only does it help fuel the local economy but it means many talented people get a chance to practise their craft and lift their skills."
The first Mad Max movie (1979) was filmed in Victoria with Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) filmed mainly in and around Broken Hill. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) was shot in Coober Pedy in South Australia and in NSW.
CarriageWorks will be used for the development work for Fury Road, as well as Miller's sequel to Happy Feet.
Miller's company Kennedy Miller Mitchell will start pre-production immediately. Filming starts next year.
"The Mad Max films are iconic," Mr Rees said. "In the hands of director George Miller, we will see one of the largest and most ambitious live action films ever made in Australia.
"This is a clear vote of confidence in Australian expertise. This proves that Sydney is an international contender for major film production."
Gonna miss Mel Gibson and the boomerang kid in this one :(
good to see the V8 intersepter back on the road :P

any one read the book called stealing speed is about how suzuki stole mz,s two stroke secrets in the early 60s im just reading the last chapter great read
-
Oh yes! a terrible story. Walter Kaaden and his little group working on an absolute shoe-string and doing amazing things with the 2-stroke. MZ (ie motorworks Zschopau, which is in the east of Germany, near Chemnitz) was never going to be able to take on the Japanese once they moved in and threw fabulous sums of money at everything.
VMX magazine had a great piece on MZ a while back, come to think of it.
Search around on the web for Kaaden. A fascinating story.
-
Ah yes Herr Kaaden (a bit of a letdown to find he was a good Nazi :'( ) a rocket scientist met Ernst Degner and the rest is history. Rivals any Cold War spy thriller, Degner's taste for the highlife eventualy brought him undone (and not to mention a suspicious death). I didn't know 'Degner Curve' at Suzuka was named after him. Interesting while Kaaden stayed on in the East and gave the world the expansion chamber Wernher von Braun the head rocket scientist poached by the CIA then went on the head rocket engine development that put man on the moon and later ICB missles. I'm glad Kaaden stayed where he did, expansion chambers are far better than nuclear misslies. Walter Kaaden the TwoStroke Institute salutes(or Heil Hitlers !) you where ever you are.
-
"with Socialist greetings!" would have been correct for his MZ period ;D
-
Kaaden genuinely was a grubby little fasist but he was indeed a 2 stroke pioneer. His work on expansion chambers and transfer porting moved the 2 stroke out of the Villiers era and set the game plan for Ernst Degner and consequently the Japanese. There's got to be a movie in the Degner defection. It's one of those great 'cold war' yarns that seem like a James Bond novel.

Would anyone have a unwanted copy of this ?,as they don't ship this item out of USA.
cheers
-
G'day Alison,
ask Buddy Johnson on the home page he was offering to get the items and then ship them to OZ.
Need help with shipping from the US?
As many OzVMX regulars would know, Buddy Johnson in the States offers assistance with getting goods sent to Australia for those buying from US eBay sellers that won't ship internationally.
He's provided that service for a lot of Aussie buyers for a while now, but he's found that he's starting to get requests to ship entire bikes. That's pretty much out of the question - Buddy can help out where he can with smaller items, but the really big stuff is a bit hard to manage.
As he says, "I do the repackaging and forwarding of parts as I can do it in the evening after work and take to the Post Office the next day on my lunch hour as long as it weighs 70LBs and under( I can not ship frames anymore as the USPS did away with Surface Shipping and now only offer Air Mail and the frames are over girth). I do not have the time to go to the Ports Authority and deal with Customs as required to ship complete bikes".
So, bear this in mind if you are thinking of using Buddy's services. As long as it's only smaller parts, he'll do the customs forms and repackage if necessary then post to Australia for a small fee & the shipping costs.
You can check Buddy's credentials on eBay where his seller name is "maicobuddy38f".
another way is request the ISBN book # and do a search on "biblioquest" http://www.biblioquest.com.au/ good Luck!

Another coffee table book just released
Publisher`s Notes:
You want to be on your motorcycle on the open road?but if you can`t, then the next best place is the garage. There old bikes are restored, wild customs come to life, and friendships are made of beer, b.s., and bruised knuckles. These are the garages where this book takes you?from the old firehouse to the lavishly finished tin shed to the plain old two-car attached structure harboring the treasured bike while the family car sits out in the weather. Motorcycle Dream Garages opens the doors to sixteen palaces for two-wheeled work and play, among them a secret one in Chicago housing over one hundred rare and collectible bikes at a location known only to members of an underground club; a converted firehouse in St. Paul; a marble palace in Washington DC; and a variety of luxury motorcycle garages owned by racers and celebrities both in the US and Europe. Learn more about the book, the bikes and the author at the book`s website: http://www.motorcycledreamgarage.com.

Just received two OFF- ROAD GIANTS Heroes of the 60's and one FAY TAYLOUR Queen of Speedway in the mail from Ebay OS,all for under $70 ;D
How can the local market still be standing.
cheers
ps we by local 3/4 of the time
-
You'll love Off Road Giants.....Not. Worst book on motocross history in recent times. It's chocka full of uninteresting people we've never heard of. Just my opinion. You might line it Alison.
-
Have had a flick through Off-Road Giants, and noted the uninteresting people ;D -there parents loved em though ;) ;D
anyway I have got stuck into Fay Taylour a true motorcycle legend ,the only thing she was ever pissed at was not getting her name entered in the World Guiness Book of Records,(you had to have two heads or a very skinny waist.
Fays back ground in Ireland and her ancestral descendants Wolseley which have connections to Worsley River and townsite next door to us is very interesting also being a police chefs daughter probably helped with her discipline 8)
So good :P and I'm only on page 13.
cheers

Here's another one for Mr. Monaro. I've had this poster for around 20 years, never ever seen one the same, there is some slight variations of it, but none exactly the same as this one

That red motor with headers out both sides looks the goods-eh bloke.
Just finished Jupiters Travels (xmas prezzy from Jess) Funny how so much changes but so much stays the same. I took him only 10.000 miles to find out the Trumpy was a shitter, and when it was rebuilt in California he got upset with the US distributor when they told him to get a Yamaha or a BMW.
Now I'm on to Zoltan the Hungarian on his Harley outfit going a lap in 1927-no wonder it took him 8yrs- those Harleys were never too quick. I like the idea of the chair though.

In the '60s I had a book called Scrambles and Motocross by Les Archer which I found very inspiring.
Of course I lent it to some-one [as you do,] consequently I don't remember who, and haven't seen it since, or another copy anywhere.
It was probably indirectly responsible for a few monumental get-offs by me at Moorebank!
I believe that any-one reading the book now would find it quite interesting comparing the type of machinery that was winning big time in Les Archers day, to the modern high performance and light weight equipment now.
cheers pancho.
-
Wal, I tried to buy a copy of Les Archers book on eBay a few months ago and unfortunately I had to let it go when the price got up around $200+. I've since read Frank Stanboroughs copy and agree it's a good read. Les Archer would have to be one of the more interesting characters, and his Nortons the most unique in the early days of GP motocross.
-
And you'd need to be a muscle man to ride that Norton I reckon!
kind of puts me in mind of Dennis Alderton riding his 500 twin BSA 'round Moorebank. Come to think of it, it looked more like big Dennis charging 'round the track ,dragging the cumbersome beast along with him!
cheers pancho

A mate stopped into a country market on the weekend for 10 minutes, won a hamper with his ticket :D
and picked these up for 50c each.

Great book, even though it's a bit dated it's got good training tips and some great shots from the old Husqvarna Training School. In amongst Brad and a number of GP stars doing the course in the book is ex Aussie Champ Pelle Granquist.
