Title: Nicasil Bores and which rings?
Post by: 090 on September 25, 2009, 05:27:29 am
I have asked the question to a couple of forum members but i will ask again to be sure. I want to know if a nicasil bore will accept a chrome ring.
I have been told that chrome on chrome is a no no and have heard of the disasters with this. I have also been told that chrome on nicasil is fine as they are different surfaces. I just dont want to re do mine and wreck it by doing the wrong thing. I also want to know if you cant run a chrome ring, where do you get the correct rings? This is for a cr480 barrel.

if this is for the me 480 kit in mine the guy i bought it off told me to use a cr500 vertex piston and rings as honda left the piston unchanged from the cr480 to the  2001 cr500 youve got a good selection of nicasil frendly pistons and rings

I would try Wiseco. In the serco book they list a range of different individual rings made from different materials for different bore types.

I'll make it nice and easy Brad
YES CHROME RING IN NICASIL CYLINDER

Either the ring OR the cylinder is hard chromed(like on forks). But not BOTH
Rings for chromed cylinders are uncoated on the face that's the give away.
If the cylinder is cast iron or Nikasil the ring face is hard chromed.

or

Unchromed ring face = Chrome cylinder
Chromed ring face = Cast iron/Nikasil

HTH

Hey Brad, you can't run chrome rings in a chrome bore which you don't have so go for it. If you relieve the exhaust port and drill the holes in the exhaust side of the Wiseco piston as per the instructions included, you'll have no problems. You can run the standard rings in either cast iron or nicasil bores. It was only the early Red Devils that had chrome bores but Mugen bores were Nicasil. Anyway, you don't rev it hard enough to do damage.

Cool!
I also have a standard cast piston. Is that all good to run as well?

There is absolutely NO problems running forged Wiseco/Wossner pistons in Nikasil bores, I dunno where you got that one from Caps. Have run forged items in countless plated cylinders NO drama's. One thing to check is there is no cross hatch on the exhaust bridge, indicating there is relief there.(I'll post some pics later)

Sounds odd Caps
KTM run forged pistons & Nicasil barrels.
Probably Husky too
