Title: Removing tapered roller headstock bearings???? (from triple clamp shaft)

Gents,

         What is the best way to remove the lower headstock bearing on the 83 Husky? We have taken off the C-clip and washer and applied a bit of pressure from the short end. Nil result. Something has to give???

Any help is appreciated

Pete, you need a big hammer and a drift ;D ;D.  I use a nice square edged punch as a drift.  Support the steering head on top of a saw horse or the likes and then drive it out with sharp blows.  Move the punch around the bearing race to keep it square as it moves out. The lip on the race is quite small so your punch needs to be nice and square - not rounded and abused!  You need to hit it really hard to move it initially. 

Installing the new bearing is easier if you chill it in the freezer first.  I grind the old race down slightly using a bench grinder so it is no longer an interference fit in the steering head and then use it as the drift to drive the new bearing in.  Use grease to help.  Once the bearing race goes in below the steering head I then use a large socket as a drift and drive it all the way home.  Good luck and if you keep the bearings greased and adjusted you should never have to do this job again ;D ;D

Hey all that PEZBerq said is great! But, make sure after your first few rides you keep and eye on them as they seat-in. They may need a nip up. If you neglect to check on them and they do loosen up they will hammer a new groove into the new shells and they will need replacing again sooner than hoped for.

Run a mig or arc weld around the working face of the race , when the weld cools it will contract and loosen the race from the headstock. Race should almost fall out if not a gentle tap will realese it,this is of course assuming you dont want to reuse the bearing .
As PEZberg says reinstalation is just reverse physics , freeze the race before installing  :)

We thought there might be a less brutal way of pressing the stem out etc.  Seems not. Round two this arvo then.

The shaft is a press fit , as is the bearing.

Press them out and press them in.

Success - Removed the cage, applied a bit of heat and tapped it off with a pin punch.

Job completed by the current Husqvarna mounted Over 60 - Australian VMX Champ. Thanks KB. Thanks All concerned.
