Title: CR480 Sag
Post by: Tahitian_Red on September 20, 2009, 07:44:26 am
What sag setting do you run your CR480's at?

It seems the stock springs and most aftermarket springs are made for someone under 190lbs (86Kg).  I'm having trouble getting to the 100mm recommended race sag without losing the static sag.

Sounds like you need a heavier spring. I need to sort mine as well as it tends to squat under acceleration.

We hade a few requests lately to replace springs or shocks for that model. However , I believe the OD of the spring has to be narrower than standard springs , to clear the airbox . If there is a firm demand ( preorders) we will make a special limited  run of them .

Thats right .The shocks are only 40mm ID so the whole thing including the spring is abit narrower than the later model stuff .They went to a 44 in 84 for thr 250 and a year later for the 500's (I think) 46 mm a few years later 88 I think.

Also the 450 b and 480 C has a lot harder spring rate than the 480 D.

I bought a spring over the counter at a bike shop. I think it was an Eibach .

The Eibach spring that works for the stock shock is 883.0067.1.  It is a 6.7Kg/mm spring and works for folks over 86 kilos.  I have an Ohlins shock and the highest spring rate I can get is 6.4Kg/mm.  I guess I'm gonna have to work on the other side of the equation and lose weight.

Sorry about that.  I only have 1983 CR480's, so it would be for a D model.  ;)

just slightly off topic about the bike but definiately about springs (which I know nothing about but getting there).  The spring rates you mention are really really high for what I am aware of???  My 360B has a 4.0 kg rate spring and I have beenn chasing a 4.2 as I am a "little" over the 86 kg mentioned here but this is way short of what you are mentioning.  I know the shocks are entirely different but is the shock rate a fairly relative thing ie is 4.2 way too low for what I would be after?

cheers

Rossco

on the 480 because the swing arm is such hight leaverage you need to run an extreamly heavy spring

caps its more to do with the linkage set up .81/82/83/84 Hondas have pretty much the same length swingarms ,same overall bike weight , similar motors and power etc but 81/82 480 has a 7.7 kg standard and a 8.2 kg optional spring.83 has a different linkage and leverage ratio .Spring rate is 6.0 kg and 6.4kg opt. 84 is different again and has a 4.5kg spring (although way too soft ,should be 4.8 standard)

if you want them , we will make them . Just nominate the rate desired.

How much for one of spring?
