Its been awhile since we had a good discussion on the best motoX bikes made, so I thought we could voice our opinions' on what YZ we like the best and for what reasons.
Keep it within the vintage period's and if you feel the need to 'up spec' what the beloved factory gave us then so be it.
I would start, but I cant make up my mind, so I will think about it at work tomorrow and give my opinion.

Obviously the YZ 465 G. Went like a cut cat, looked like a works bike, well engineered, swing-arm gives me a "chubby" every time..... 8)
-
Oh DJ, surely you jest.
this is a trick question, you are mistaken my good man its like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow "they don't exist" ;D.
-
I love 'em all. I think I'm a bit like you DJ. I can't decide :-\. For pure fun factor it has to be the 465. I can't comment on the 250H, but by all accounts a nice rideable bike. I really love the look of the 125J, but my favourite of the ones I own is the 250C. By all accounts not that good a bike, but I rode one once as a young bloke and it was loud and stinky and went like a cut cat. Loved it ;D ;D. So there you go - No help to you whatsoever ::)
-
hey DJ yes yz 80c for me if it has to be yz
-
Sorry DJ-I'm with Hoony they have always looked highly strung and anorexic to me.
cheers

Now Hoony, we all know your a closet YZ man, but until you get rid of those CR's your rainbow will never come in ;) we YZ brothers would welcome you into the fold, but you would have to learn the "YZ Prayer"
Our Yamaha which is in the shed
Racing be thy game
Thy wins will come
Thy ride will be done, on dirt, mud and sand
Give us the throttle, and we'll holeshot them other brands
And forgive us for roosting, as we forgive them who T-bone into us
And lead us unto victory
Deliver us from siezing
For thine is a Yamaha, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever, Torsten Hallman
;D ;D ;D

Anything 'F' or 'G'. Not from a riding point of view (cause I wouldn't know anyway) but because we had a Yamaha shop between us and the local shops when I was a kid, and I would drag my mum in there to have a look every time we went past.
I got my first 'F' model YZ thirty years later ;D
-
Ok, i'm out of the closet.
I had a 1982 YZ250J which i really loved at the time, great bike and nearly everyone had one that year, it was also the one that got me my first wins in C Grade. but i reckon i also have a soft spot for my 77' YZ125D, it was the one that taught me to ride better after 2 mini bikes.
Squeezed it out of me DJ ;)

There's only one way to sort this out .Where's the Pics boys. C'mon show us ya YZ's not Brochure pics Real ones .http://(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb130/yzhilly/101_2366.jpg) .Here's mine 78 was a good year for Yamaha ,my first MX Bike was a YZ80E and i'm spewing i havent got a pic of it . It was second hand and had been setup and raced for 6 months before i bought for $325 of paper round money and Pumping petrol on sundays to buy it . I luved it and thought i was King Dick everytime i wheeled it out .
-
hoony i can only remember you riding that yz anyway :o
best yz YZ465H no contest :P
g was ok but h better
490s were pigs ;D

The YZ250G/H is a highlight. Nearly as easy to get along with as a trailbike, but still goes like a proper MXer.
The YZ125E is a really sweet bike that just happens to fall on the wrong side of the pre-78 cut-off. If the class structure suited them better, then they'd be everywhere - virtually unbreakable, sweet handling (heaps better than a D), easy to get along with, and generally one of those "balanced" bikes that isn't amazing in any one aspect, but does everything well.
But if it came down to it, I'd always pick my YZ125X as my favourite. My D is faster, has a better power delivery, handles better, and fits me better - but the X behaves in a way that just makes sense to my brain, so I can get around an MX track faster on it.
It just makes sense (to me) so it can be ridden to the meagre limits of my ability without wasting time thinking about what the bike is going to do.

yz490L last /best efort against air cool big bores
-
Not VMX but soon.... YZ250U, first twin disc, low and narrow, heap of midrange, like riding baby 500......traded 490S on it.
Don't ask me which one I think is the worst. ::)
Also 125H fan, was riding RM125X at the time, YZ wasn't as trick but lasted a hell of a lot better.

we YZ brothers would welcome you into the fold, but you would have to learn the "YZ Prayer"
I thought it was a bit more simple like, dont break down, dont break down... amen. :-*
-
please ban Honda riders from this discussion :D
and what could be sexier than this

That's pretty much it. But the good thing is that the Yamaha Gods always answer that prayer. ;D
-
Has to be the YZ80 for providing the world with a decent ignition, that seems to be able to be grafted on to anything.
-
it's funny that i consider myself a Yamaha man but can only ever recall owning one YZ.
my first bike, a YZ80D. i loved that little thing. possibly my fondness for that little bike is what led me to building up my little MX125a.
but the "best" YZ?
as a kid i always loved Mikkola and his mighty YZ400F {yeah i know it was an OW} and would love to have one of them babies.
but after checking out the sweet job Mainlines done on his 125F... i'd really dig one of them too.
make mine a clean white one ;).

At least until the 125 is finished
-
got to love the G and the H both the 250 and 465.... really nice bike BTW.
-
THE BEST YZ WAS AN MX250B
Strange but true...... :D
-
well Dave at least you are closer to my opinion than anyone else with those later fandangled modernish things! :D
-
Any of the A models after that Yamaha lost the plot and went to that monoshock deal ::)
However ;) DJs YZ125E is a great little bike :)
Anyone whos ever ridden that bike (and there been a few ) from slow lard arses to quick A graders all get off smiling and dont want to give it back ;D
-
THE BEST YZ WAS AN MX250B
Strange but true......
Ah David...that was to be my answer, but I held back for fear of breaking the rules. Great minds think alike my friend, it must be a Klub Kevlar thing.
I'd also add the magnificent MX400b, the first serious Japanese 500 classer contender. Prior to it's release the Japs were underdogs in the open class despite a glimmer of hope from the limited release YZ360A and B models. The Yamaha MX400b did for the open class what the Honda CR250 Elsinore had done for the 250 class two years earlier. In my opinion the MXB was also one of the most beautiful MX bikes ever made.
I hope you, Vicki and the sprogs have a hoot in California. I'll try and maintain the rage on the scrutineering line mate ;D

Firko - you aren't planning some shite stirring by any chance are you :o

Firko - you aren't planning some shite stirring by any chance are you
Nah Rossco, just being my usual self. Any bike I knock back will have to be a real doozie. As long as nobody tries to bullshit me all will be fine. ;)
-
YZ250A and 360A, very worksy, light, fast, rare and very expensive when new. Also the only twin shock YZ ever made, YZ250B ,360B because they were the beginning of long travel suspension, and you gotta love mx bikes with alloy tanks!! Did any body make a bike with a alloy tank that was a dud?(I might have opened a can of worms here)
-
I've gotta go with the YZ360B. From the first time i saw Trevor Flood racing one, right up until today i've thought they were cool.
-
Yep I'll go for the YZB's as well, ;)

-
oooooh - I am getting a warm and fuzzy feeling now :P
-
Come on Ross its just an "A" with a screen door closer in it.
-
Freaky - there isn't a touch of jealousy there is there! Nah sorry I actually think I might need a slightly heavier duty screen closer to!
-
Maybe this one ???? ;D
