Dad snagged a motor, frame and swing arm for a twin pipe. He has a donor bike for most of what is missing, plus i have sourced a few things as well.
Here are a few pic's of the motor. Weird old thing thats for sure. the head is way to big, the barrel is ridiculously heavy and some of the fins are part of the cases ???
This is an early motor as it is made of magnesium, where as the later TP's were aluminum. The cases and side covers are rough as guts as they were sand cast ( oooh, worksy!). Still typically bullet proof though.
The clutch cover had a fibreglass repair which was pulled out. It will be repaired properly.

Gearbox inspection in ten minutes flat! Selector forks in your hand in twelve!
The only issue at the moment is that there are no selector forks. The seller neglected to point that out when we (dad) paid the premium he asked.
I have since emailed him and to his credit has apologized and said he will find the parts. I will also be trying to source as well as this wont be a long term project as dad is already stuck into it. No doubt it will be finished and sorted for nats.

Excellent Brad,I always enjoy your "blow by blow" restos with plenty of good quality pictures.These models seem overall smaller than the later models or is that just an optical illusion?Are the front ends the same measurements as later models?

Good one Brad. The old bike classes wouldn't be in so much trouble if more later era riders like yourself and Mainline looked outside of the circle towards the already existing older classes instead of lobbying for newer divisions. Nearly every younger bloke I know of who's undertaken a pre 75 or pre 65 bike build has become engulfed in the project and started to understand the history and culture of our sport so much more.
You're so lucky to have a dad who can share your passion. You fellas are going to have a ball with this project.

When you find someone to cast up an alloy barrel for your 250 twinport , put me down for one as well, then I can use the cast iron one I've got, as it should be used , as a bloody boat anchor, they couldn't have made it heavier if they tried to.
I was told by an "expert" that Twinport engine #'s starting with 100*** were the magnesium (Electron) case motors , my one has a 200*** number like yours but has an aluminuim case, any other experts out there with relevant info ?

Thanks mate. The motor maybe a little smaller but the chassis is almost identical to a sidepiper. Even the forks are the same. the motor is the most unique part of the bike. There will be alot more manufacturing with this one as they are fairly rare. A side pipe rod kit will be made to fit which in turn allows the side pipe piston (which is the same as all) as well.

I am very lucky for sure Firko. I love every bit of it. We are into it already with parts coming from Les, hyping up George Mackensie to do all the machining etc and have pulled the motor to bits.

I bought a set of Morads for a more authentic look and dad has painted up the hubs, so they are off to the wheel builder today. I have sourced parts from S.A and after ringing around the world found a source in Holland. Luckily dad speaks Dutch as the guy doesn't speak any english and has all we want for the motor.
The third photo is the #62 which i am certain is the year of manufacture as it is a magnesium motor which is the early type, going to alloy later on.

This thing is really starting to come together. All the parts that were missing have been sourced . Got onto a guy from Holland that speaks no english. Lucky dads a dutchy himself so we were able to get all the hard to get parts from him.
Check out the tank. Its the early style as the rest of the bike is as well. I already had a tank which is the same as the side pipe which they went to on later year twin pipes. I really wanted the early tank and now it has turned up, as far as I'm concerned, money well spent. It has never had fuel in it! Brand new!
Also the clutch cover is also brand bloody new. I couldn't believe it. Its amazing what's out there if you are lucky enough to find the right guy. I still have some parts coming from S.A as well.
Dad is the one doing all the work on this. I have been putting my hand in my pocket for all the parts and will assemble the motor when ::) we get the crank and barrel back.

I think thats a testament to Firkos theory that there is still plenty of bikes and parts out there if you are prepared to look.
Brad has a real passion for this twin pipe and is obviously putting in the effort to find the parts and bring this bike back to life :)
Many people me included give up to easily because they couldn't find their own arses with both hands and a map ::)
The fact that Brad and his Dad Bert are working on this project together is way cool.
I really enjoy it when my Dad visits and we can do a bit on the bikes together :)
This Bike will be a stunner when finished and you can bet it will be a race winner to 8) not a garage queen :)

Typically, we hit a snag. We had to change a gear over on the gear box set we were using. The problem was that it was held on the shaft by another gear that was pressed on. We don't have a press. Also another small hitch was that we didn't have two 7mm diameter bolts that are part of the series of bolts that hold the head on. Is there an easy source for 7mm diameter bolts anyone ? Maico's have a few random 7mm bolts as well, stupid idea!

I purchased some 7mm bolts off Les of Mainly Maico for the rear sprocket.
Give him a call.
I also found a chap in the Uk that sells 7mm bolts.

No last time I went up to Moss Street when I needed them.I have been told MCS has 7mm chain adjuster bolts. Just need to cut them down.
Will check the nut and bolt place out first though Stew.

did you try classic fasteners Brad in Sth Australia? they advertise in VMX mag.

Montesa use alot of 7mm nut and bolts. I have 7mm tap and die which wasn't to hard to get. To make 7mm nuts use a 1/4 unc nut and run the tap through it its not perfect but it got me out of trouble. Ive never had to make bolts but Im sure it could be done.

Super nice bike Brad. I really like your perspective on our sport as you don't seem to have the bias against the old bikes that many of your fellow Evo/Pre 85 era racers have. I hope your getting involved with a twin piper encourages more younger guys to get into the older classes, especially pre 65. The only way the early classes can survive in the long term is by guys your age becoming involved.

I agree with you Firko.It would be good if some of the guys sitting on the old iron freed some up and made it available ,although with prices as they are affordability is the big issue.Top job Brad and Dad.

I'll be putting younger riders on two or maybe three of my bikes for the big meetings next year. It'd be nice to see other retired older ex racers do the same. It'd also be a good thing to get younger blokes involved in the building of older bikes as well though. Brad, Shortshifter and Mainline are getting involved in early bikes and it'd be nice to see more. The bikes are nowhere near as nasty as the naysayers will tell you.

Yes, l do agree to free these pre65 bikes up, there are to many people out their that have more than one pre 65 bike just sitting in sheds doing nothing , and they are the same people who would like to see the pre 65 class to grow, but they are the ones holding it back.

I loaded a small video of the cz running. A few teething problems with the new fibre glass tank leaking and the motor detonating it seems.

Love the Helmet, l have been trying to buy a Cromwell or Everoak but gee they want lots for them.

Since the photo, the motor has been completely apart as I had issues with the gearbox ( due to me not shimming it correctly) and the fact it was sucking air and all of the mating surfaces needed to be machined or lapped. The magnesium cases are a nightmare. So' many more $$$$$$$$$$ and countless more hours and it is in the mega trailer and ready to go. Even the nos tank was leaking like a sive, so it had to be split open and sealed up.

That one is brand new, with the original tag on it. And yes it was fairly expensive.
