Title: Queensland, perfect one day.......
Post by: GMC on August 16, 2009, 03:35:11 pm
Queensland, perfect one day,
forkin freezing at night.

The 09 Nationals were a bloody top event, I know the club felt they had some teething problems but as a spectator they weren't noticed. All the workers & sponsers involved should be proud of themselves for putting on such a great spectacle.
It looked like a good track, very much a case of last racer beats first spectator. But then last spectator beats first no show.
Twas good to catch up with some old & new faces, I was able to catch up with some of the WA guys, didn't notice any turds but some of them weren't the Lean, Mean, Fighting machines I had somehow imagined them to be ;D

First turn seemed to be good

I wonder what came first, the sidecar or the catapault?

Thanks for the pics and comments Geoff.Beautifull track in a beautifull location.
I heard a bit about your sleeping conditions - no wonder you were cold.
Did you count up how many GMC podiums yet?

On arriving I had to sort out where I could park my tent, as it turns out the guy organising camp sites was a guy that I didn't finish building a pipe for in time. After first suggesting I could camp over the road  :o he then found me a nice little spot by the creek. Sunday morning my neighbors ask me if I ever looked over my tent, bugger me, their was this huge branch about 10" round broken out of its tree & resting in another tree, right over top of my tent. Note to self, try to get more pipes out on time ;D

Lost track of who was riding what in the end.

Pre 75 open, Cavell, Bailey, & Van Barello were all quite fast & looked it too, but young HL was never far behind them

That first shot is an absolute winner, Geoff!
It's got a great 'feel' to it, that most of my shot can't match. Well done!!

You've definitely got the eye.  ;D

P.S You still using that stinking little Pentax?

P.P.S. I promise I'll send that engine tomorrow.  ::)

Yep still using my trusty Pentax, what else would you use at a vintage meeting besides a vintage camera, those bloody modern cameras all look the same to me ;D

Actually I found that picking my camera up once a year leaves me a bit rusty trying to work the manual focus, & 3 lap races mean the guys don't come around very often if your trying to work out what lines they're taking.
I see a lot of people with good camera's but they don't seem to get very adventurous with walking around the track to get different shots.

I've been toying with getting a new camera for a while but would rather spend the money on a bike at the moment, but I have been thinking about the Pentax K20, Do you have any thoughts on them?
I'm not after a top end camera, just a decent mid range type camera. The Canon's confuse me with too many models that keep getting outdated.

You're dead right mate. Most photographers (me included) get lazy with all the auto-focusing and zoom leneses that we can stand in the one spot and get an acceptable result. So we do...................  ::)

There are situations where I don't have a choice (like when they've given me 2 songs to get shots of Joe Cocker  >:(  ) but I've often thought of trying to shoot a whole wedding with just the standard 50mm lens, but I haven't had the balls to do it as yet...........

P.S. no idea what a Pentax K20 is, but I'll look into it.

Geoff - thats a little harsh - not quite as lean and mean as expected - bloody hell mate even Magoo said something more complimentary regards my rather svelte, muscular frame!!!!   ;D

I love the vintage feel the old Pentax gives the shots Geoff. If it wasn't for the modern riding gear the pics could have been taken 30 years ago. You really looked the part too, those sideburns blended in so well with the rock'n'roll camera!

I've got a drawer full of ADB supplied Fuji film a Kodak Retinette Ia and the Minolta SR101 I got for my 21st birthday (not to mention the 3 Canon EOS SLRs that I can't bother selling because they're worth zilch in the age of digi)so I should follow your lead and use a vintage camera for vintage races.

You guys should all talk to Geoff Udy, he came up, took some great shots and then shot off home. From the shots I saw he found perfect angles and framed the riders/bikes very well, but being an ex rider probably helped alot. He said he only had his second string camera along so it would have been something to see if he had his newer one.
I agree that the opening shot captures the moment very well and yes the slingshot predates the wasp by about 5 mins in the time scale of human evolution.

Thanks GMC for the proof that I didn`t spend the whole event stuck on the start line, stalling or falling off somewhere. :-\
