Title: The Bike you lusted for
Post by: ba-02-xr on July 23, 2009, 09:50:37 am
Hi guys. Just wondering what was your most wanted bike. A couple of rules to keep it simple
1 You must of been under 16 at the time. I know some of you probly cant remember that far back
2 Cant be any biger than 125cc
3 A bike you never actualy got at the time. If you got it later thats fine.
Mine would have to of been the 1986 KTM 80 MX. I was 14. But ended up with a bloody YZ 80 S instead. Peace of........

Why the rules? I've never, ever lusted for a bike 125cc or smaller.  ;)

Shit when we were kids in the early seventies ALL we lusted after were under 125. KO XR75's immediately spring to mind but were only in the hands of the lucky spoiled kids. Still what's wrong with a C90 with knobbies (bike #1) or a kitted TS90 Honcho (bike #2) and both proudly bought with my own pocket money from weekend and holiday work - no parents involved and proud of it!

Funny while we looked longingly at the XR's I don't truly remember lusting after any bike, rather I remember the longing for the weekend to come around so we could find a patch of dirt and enjoy ourselves on whatever dunga we had.

I think this subject should be open to ALL caps because it depends on what you lusted after at any given time

Dave and BA...I was 16 43 years ago so trust me when I say that there weren't any sub 125 bikes worth lusting over back in 1966. At sixteen I lusted after Julie Sangren and the bloke in Alma lane Maroubra's BSA Goldstar 500 scrambler. I never got either. :'(

yeah, i think the under 125 rule is a bit "nancy" ;D
but anyway, i had a YZ80d and i loved it, my older brother had a DT125e and we both enjoyed that too!
but for a reason i can explain, i always wanted a green tank DT100 fitted with a preston petty front guard and stripped of its road gear.{see, i kept to the rules}

XL100. Dunno why anyone would lust after one of these... I guess being surrounded by Honda 4-strokes had an impact on my naive young mind - but unlike the trikes, Z50s and CTs that we had, the XL looked like a real bike. I've got an SL100 now, which is close enough for me.

87 CR125RH - I read all of the magazines - they were The Best 125 in 1987, they were a Honda, and they looked damn sexy. Oh yes, I wanted one for sure. Funnily enough, even when they were just an old bike (and I was over 16), and there were newer models to lust after, the CR still rated. Got one now.

80 YZ125G. Saw one at the Bike Farm in about 1990, and figured that it was the right mix of performance of price (working roughly one day a month for $4.40/hour didn't leave much disposable income...). Got one now.

Firko if size is the issue just put down whatever. I thought some guide lines to go by would make people think a bit more & be a bit more interesting. Instead of everyone saying a CCM that they say when they were 30 or what ever it might be. Going back to what is considered a junior is always interesting to see how the mind changes with age.

The first bike I ever really lusted for was a 1970 400 square barrel Maico. I was racing a Bultaco Sherpa S 125 in my first season of motocross and was ready to bail out of the sport because I hated that forking Bultaco so much. Then I saw Warren Willis hooting around Nepean on the most awesome looking bike I'd ever seen, a 400 Maico square barrel. I sold my Bultaco and RT1 Yamaha within a month and bought a 350 square barrel Maico (Blair Harley had sold out of 400's so I settled on a 350 after Blair told me they were better than the 400.) I still own that dear old bike today, the lust of 1970 has turned into a nice mid life fuzzy warmth 39 years later. I'll never sell her, despite being offered 9k for her a month or so ago. She's still uuber competitive and is still the prettiest girl in the class.

TM 125 Suzuki. Probably still wouldn't mind one today.
Hey Firko I'm glad you qualified that you lusted after the Guy in Alma lanes bike and not him.

Yep, mine was a yz80K that year i was about 13, my mate had one he and his mates were always burning around the streets of Balmain and Annandale getting chased by cops. He gave me a couple of rides down at a vacant block of land near the sydney fish markets right under the now Anzac bridge. I had a TS100 1974 model at the time which was kept at a friends farm near Dale Buggins farm close tpo Wyong.

down on the farm in the dark days teenage wet dreams were all about the Enduro bike, at the time IT175G, something that could double chasing cows and getting you to the bus stop for the hour plus grind into school.

Ended up with a very used TS185, still have the same TS185 and the same mates off the bus all these years later.

At 14 I lusted over an RM80..I mowed a zillion lawns and managed to get myself one 8)

At 15 I wanted a PE250 or a PE175 more than anything. 1 of my best school mates and myself had grand plans and shared visions of us riding across Oz on shiney new PE's without a care in the world....no idea where the money was going to come from but the plan in principle was good ;D

At 16 I bought a new RM400C on inflated HP at the reduced price of $1199. My desires for any other model or make vanished over night and was never to return. I still love my old 400 and it still puts the fear of God into me if I choose to crank that little bit extra :o when I think seriously, apart from an RN370 there are very few bikes I'd even consider if it meant I had to trade or sell off my old RM as part of the deal.

I'm also regressing as it's the pre'75 era that does it for me nowdays 8) back then (late 70's) if it wasn't made after '76 it was simply an old outdated shitheap ;) a friend of mine, Mark Sudgen, had an RH250 when I had my RM80B, at the time he could have offered me the RH + $350 and I still wouldn't have considered a swap..a flogged out RH back then wasn't worth $100!...how times change eh! :D the bike (RH) finally came to live with many other abandoned wrecks at the bottom of CabbageTree Ck at Nudgee Beach..but I still have the RM80 ::)

I had an XR75 just as they were becoming uncompetitive - wanted a YZ80C or even better an RM80B (I think it was as they were rare as hens teeth).  Later on I lost sleep over the RC 400/500s as used by Matry, Jim Pierre et al.....................oh dear!!

I remember my cousin had an immaculate 1986 CR80. I used to sit in the shed for hours drooling over it. I wanted one so bad, I used to cut pictures out of Just bikes and ADB and hassle my parents for hours on end. Never got one unfortunately. Although the desire never left me cause I now have an immaculate 1986 CR250. My dream eventually came true. Better late than never.

Hope I can pick up this thread.
As a 13-14 yr old in NZ I spent a fair bit of time tring to work out how to get a TM125. Saved one from the bin at Mayfairs yrs later when they moved out of Lutwych rd, Windsor-Brisbane not Sydney. Had it in my shed for yrs and a guy asked if he could buy it when VMX was just kicking off. I told him $250 and he said he would get me the dollars-but could he take it now. I needed the room so off it went-never to be seen or paid for again. I do still have 1 sidecover/no. plate but that's probably not enough to start a project.
After the TM I went on to drool over the green tank CR125 but ever being practicle I ended up with an MT125 to ride to work and trails on the week-end, about as 1/4 as good from all accounts, even with a hand-built low pipe.
Upon further reflection, I loved and still would kill for, a European 6 days bike of any kind(almost) from 80cc to 175cc. How those guys rode six days on an 80 or even 50cc is just mind blowing.
Anyone got such a thing? apart from in the Euro vinduro mags.

My ten cents worth.
A big brute 360 Husky. Friend of mine in early eighties, rode one past us on the footy fields we used to hang out on.
It was the quickest thing; with the most ear shrieking sound when on the pipe over flat ground, that I'd ever heard, at that stage of my life. Seen and heard 465s,480s and the like, but, this thing just had wings.

Had to be the CR125RZ at that time. I remember walking home from school and seeing a new one sitting on a stand at the local shop. Man I was in love! I think my parents got that divorce because of my bugging them for one (never did get it)!
