Title: New project for Firko: II
Post by: firko on July 13, 2009, 11:55:44 am
For a bloke who hasn't seriously raced this century I seem to be accumulating a lot of race bikes. Those that know me will agree that I'm not exactly built for the rigors of motocross, carrying more than a few excess pounds. Even though the weight is gradually coming off and I should be down close to racing weight by CD7, my permanent injuries, arthritis and my coming 60th birthday make a motocross comeback a bit unlikely. However I do miss the competition and have always liked dirt track so I'm now gearing my racing return next year towards that facet of the vintage scene. As reported elsewhere I've started work on my 650 Benelli flat tracker project and it's coming along pretty well and will definitely be finished to debut at the Bonanza next Easter.
To accompany the Benelli to the races I've done the deal on an Antig slider from forum member JimG. It's currently set up for an MX250 Yamaha engine but another mate has kindly donated a rusty old Antig frame that holds the needed Maico engine plates. I'm going to use my 400 square barrel engine and will bling the old thing up a bit to help it (showwise)against Jonesys shiny bling metalflake sliders. Luckily, this should be a pretty straightforward and cheap project with a high fun factor final result!

Are you using the mx 250 frame ? or the rusty maico ? or is that putting the engine mounts in the other frame ?  anyhow if you not using the mx250 frame talk to me..............

Wow Freaky...where did you get the idea there was an MX250 frame? I had to go back over my post to see if I'd made a mistake ???
I've bought the Antig in the photo shown hanging on the wall. Currently it comes with engine plates for a MX250 Yamaha motor. These dirt track bikes (and speedway bikes) use aluminium plates drilled and cut to suit any number of engines. Now...a mate has given me a similar Antig frame to the one I bought but it's had more hits than Michael Jackson and has been laying in a paddock for years. However! it has the Maico aluminium engine plate I need so I'll swap the plates into the bike I bought off Jim. I'll attach a photo of an Antig without a motor to show you what I mean by engine plates........The bike shown is a late Antig with plates for a laydown Godden engine but you get the plate idea

Yes i know about the plates which is why i asked are you using the engine mounts (plates)  in the other frame ?  when i reffered to the mx250 frame i mean the one that current ly is set up for it and vice versa, (not meaning an actual yam frame) it seemed a better desciption, but obviously lost in the translation  :D

I wondered if you where just using the roller parts in a raid and putting it on the maico frame, now i know its a rusty shitty i know what your doing.

While i think of it , i have been sourcing and collecting up Dt2MX barrells and heads and using them successfully on my Dt flat trackers, they seem to run much sweeter and love port work ( referring to your DT2mx  bUY) and to follow on to that,  i seems to have bought up more NOS Copper gaskets than i know what to do with after the 1st one i bought and the $30 mark was mention if you need some for half that for your DT2 project hit me up

No worries Freaky.. you should have said the Antig MX250 frame and there wouldn't have been any confusion. Is it a slider frame you want for your engine or a stock frame? If you want a slider frame, when I've worked out exactly what I'm using I should have one basic Antig frame available with no forks, wheels, tank, bodywork or seat and a set of plates to suit a Yamaha engine. It all depends on the condition of the Maico Antig. I'll let you know when I've worked out which fits what.

As far as the gaskets go, I've got a shitload of Yamaha gaskets Freaky but I'll let you know if I fall short.

Good resto project Firko I look forward to seeing it on track next year.
I'm starting a similar project soon, an Elstar with a 350 BSA.
I will post some, before, photos when i drag it out of storage, I also have some shots of the bike in action in the late 60's, that I have to find.

Beauty Curly, You and I can take on those pesky Hagon Japs and ESOs ;D. Nice meeting you the other day, the wheel fits the tracker even better than I'd hoped!

Jim
B40 with a magneto fitted and running on methanol. Not sure of the year at this stage as it is still in storage and don't know the engine number.
In its day it was pretty quick and always up the front in the Junior class.

Curly do you know the history of the 350 Elstar BSA you are going to restore. And do you know who is riding it in the photos you mentioned you might have.

Sorry for Hijacking your topic Firko.
BWP riders Billy Mac and Carl Askew. Carl got a 3rd in the Aust Champs on it in about 1968 at St Kilda S.A.

A mate of mine from Armidale (Eric Cork) rode and Elstar 350 BSA with a bit of success in the early seventys. He was a B grader at the time and rode a bit like Carl. No need for any other jet than the main. Thought it might have been Erics old Elstar for awhile there but sounds like it has been in the family for a couple of years.

Wouldn't you know it, there are two Curlys on the forum. I bought a wheel off the other Curly and thought you was he, sorry Steve. Actually we have met Steve, at Sam and Mick Wildes house in Carlton back in the 80s. I knew your brother Carl well. I look forward to seeing you on the Elstar Beeza, I don't suppose you could talk Carl into throwing a leg over again?

Mentioning the Wilde boys brings back some memories, there sister Sally was a good sought if I remember rightly. Are you still in contact with them?
I will try to catch you at Nepean in a couple of weeks and Carl should be coming as well. If Carl starts riding again I think I'll retire for a second time.
Will Allan be there with a few of his Masterpieces?

Curly I haven't seen any of the Wildes since I went to Sams 50th at his house in Queanbeyan about 5 years ago. Micks still got his ex Ole Olsen Weslake speedway bike 'The Pensioner' and think he's living on the central coast somewhere. Sals still with her husband in Toongabbie and still looked pretty good 5 years ago when I last saw her last. Her daughter is even more beautiful than Sal was at that age, which says a lot. ::) Don't know whats up with Billy but he still looks like Keith Richard ;D.
Yeah Jonesy will have his Hagon and Black Betty at Nepean, maybe even Ugly Betty as well. He and I will both look forward to carching up with you both.

Sorry 'bout the thread hijack........hey, wait a minute, it's my thread ;D.

YEs firko, Re the Antig, interested.   :P

Seeing as things are getting as little light on down here ATM i was still looking at building a Slider style 250 or picking up a speedway bike for somthing else to try from the bucket list. :)

IF the Dt and MX NAts, werent so far away road time wise, or if i could have borrowed something up there, i would have gone, but essentially (as it stands ) is a wasteland for classic rides this year in SA, so im not wasting my time on it next year ( 2010) unless i can get to those big events on the calender. :'(

I have a spare MX 250 i can pull from a Champion as i still want to see what that runs like with the Sc500 in it,   HAving a go on a slider with a gearbox might allow me to 'give it a wirl' on a ST/Lt frame but have the security of a gearbox and a motor i know somehitng about.

Keep me posted, but from your last description of  "the micheal Jackson" doesnt give me great confidence, but who knows it might even give BBetty a run if for nothing else in its naming  :D

I last saw Billy at the BWP 50th about 7 or 8 years ago and he looked fit then. I understand his grandson is riding and going pretty good.
Hey Firko are you guys camping at the track on the sat night?
