Post by: ELC hunter on July 11, 2009, 02:02:41 pm
Whats the main differences between the mx bike and enduro in 250cc and what year would it be.Frame and engine no are  54 M  15009  I think. Are they worth playing with or are parts to hard to get or over expensive. ELC hunter.

Tansmission ratio, magneto with lighting coils (also heavier)  extra flywheel on right side crank.
smaller carb, milder state of tune.  Worth would depend on what kind of riding you want to do.
Parts availability is decent.  Like many other brands some parts are expensive and hard to obtain.

Thanks cappra, is the performance way down on mx or like IT vs YZ in power stakes.. Haven;t decided what type of use yet may be dirt track.Do the original rear shocks have cooling fins x3 on the bottom of them?

Barrell & head are same as MX. Pipe has baffles, I believe, that 'strangle' it. Piston had longer inlet skirt to reduce inlet duration. Gearbox has much wider ratios. 1st to 2nd gap is rather large to put it mildly.

The primary drive has different ratios and it has a diffrent clutch on the early models. Yours 54m 15009 must be later model H6 the one Ive got is only 54m 1833 its a 74/5 model.

I once tho't that too, cos thats what many of the mag tests claimed, but according to Lyall Obrien, "Don't believe all that you read".

When I bought a V75 Cappra I found out what he meant - frame is definitely not Cro-mo. Weighs 20Kg w swingarm. Yes 44lbs! Imagine what they could have been w lightweight frames.
Later cappras may have been cro-mo tho

My Cappra came with an enduro pipe. They're a scary thing - they're lined with a perforated mesh, and between the mesh and the outer skin is some kinda of coarse fibreglass type matting (it was far to oil soaked and disgusting for me to investigate further).
In the end of the baffle cone, there's two restrictor plates - one has an OD of about 65mm and an opening about 25mm in the centre, the other has an OD of about 40mm and leads into the stinger.

I got as far as opening the pipe up and gutting it, and then began adding material to make it less crap. Then I rang GMC and ordered one of his pipes....

Rechecked engine/ frame numbers 54m 1509 not 15009 so i suppose its 74/75 ? Its interesting trying to get barrell of never can across 7mm allen bolts before, but lucky for me rod piston bore perfect once barrell removed.Where do i get 1 barrel allen screw/bolt from.Got plenty of spark. What type ,brand forks do they run.

Barrel nuts are "interesting".
The usual answer to the question "Where do I get one from?" seems to be "You buy a spare motor"...

Forks are Spanish made 35mm Betors - they're quite good, I'm told.

How do the rear shocks mount? Are they basically upright, or lay-down? Not a 74 model if they were factory lay-downs.

I got some NOS barrel nuts from EvilPay ;), and no you can't have them - you don't have enough money ;D.

I think Lozza identified some go-kart wheel nuts the same ;) :). It would be worth the enquiry if you were stuck.

There was a thread discussion about 12 months ago on the subject. There was talk of making them etc. That's when the wheel nut suggestion was made. If anyone followed it through or if it was fruitful I've no idea :P.

Is the problem getting them or getting them undone and out?

I think the 74 Enduros did have lay down shocks unlike the VR's.

I always thought that the 54M series Enduros came out in 75, and that the 44M King Scorpion was the 1974 model enduro, otherwise I'll be putting my 54M in the pre 75 next time. The 44M did not have laid down shocks but the 54M did. 8)

Correct.

44M K/Scorpion was 1974 & more of a trail bike (tho it was based on VR cappra), c/w turn signals, mirrors, carry rack, horn & auto-mix.

54M Enduro was 1975ff version of V75 cappra.
