Heres a fun thread one for the historians among us.
just wondering about Victorian MX tracks from Past and present, when they started and when they finished, need facts if possible and if a year is not known put approximately before it
i will start the list and if you want to add to it feel free but please copy and paste, and then add your detail to the bottom of the (Pasted) list
there is probably many more that escape me at present. need some help here from blokes like KB171, Albrid3, 2Shocks MR Maico, HL400 etc.

Hoony,
Great minds thin alike. ;)
One of my co-workers is a soon to retire 64 year old ex "Scramble" rider from the 60's and he can quiet clearly (in detail) tell me about inner city Melbourne tracks that no longer exist. I was hoping to get some imagery and GPS co-ordinates of the locations and work out someway to archive the information. I spoke to Firko some time back about this trying to come up with a way of documenting the info and i am still a little lost as the best way to go about it.
-
G'day Bahnster, yeah i agree it would be nice to document all this stuff. for me i am just plain curious about it after seeing some old footage a while ago about some tracks i never heard of. i am interested to see what some of our other members come up with.
a few inner city tracks i have heard of are as follows at the bottom. would like to keep it to Race tracks rather than practice tracks.

Thats right .I lived in the area as a kid.My parents went to buy a car at Neil Nielson and the mxbikes were riding around next to the car yard. That was just practice.I suddenly lost interest in the cars but my parents wouldn't go over for a closer look.

As a kid i remember riding my RM80 at Mordialloc (Governor rd) but i dont remember it as a "MX Track" rather a un-used block of land with a bunch of single track, tracks. At a guess it was around 78/79. Was there something else earlier?
Another track, but not a race track, was the riding park in Tynong near the Mill Valley Ranch. Cant remember the name.

Govenor Rd Mordialloc was a vacant block of land for many years used by kids. it then became a pay to ride track and believe it or not they actually ran an open meeting there (Frankston MCC) i know this as i knocked myself out with concussion and played the memory game with st johns for an hour till i came good.
The other place Bahnsy was called Labertouche trail bike park if its what i think you are refering to.
What i was really hoping for here guys is dates when tracks started and finished, not just the track names and i really wanted to make it RACE Tracks, not practice tracks
-
Hoony,
Oh how this brings back some fun memories like the time I remember they had to get the tractor in to get us out at Arthurs Creek because it was so wet. ;D ;D Sorry I dont have any dates, but I can remember Mr Maico taking me to my 1st ever MX race & it was in Ballarto Rd, Carrum Downs & I also remember him showing me some photos once of a race at Cerberus Navy Base & they had an event once at that place similar to Leisure land on the way to the island, but I guess that doesnt count. PS: dont forget to add Blue Rock to the list.

I don't know when Cooper Park started, but it closed some time in the late 80s or early 90s. I didn't ever race there but watched several races, including sidecars, as a kid. My little brother did race there I think.
Hamilton definitely had a track in the 80s. As a teenager I borrowed my brothers CR80 after he'd finished his races for the day there and rode in the last race - an all-in "butcher's picnic." I managed to flip it at the start line and fall off a couple more times on the next lap! I didn't try my hand at motocross racing again until I was in my thirties!
I'm quite sure the Hamilton club still has a track, but I'm not sure if it's in the same place, as the one I went to was quite close to town.
I can probably find out more details about both tracks when I'm at Harrow.

Merriang at Myrtleford (already listed) was one of my favourite tracks.
I'm surprised that Albury-Wodonga hasn't been mentioned as it held a fair few open meets.
We did get the Whitehouse boys along to our local track at Wahgunyah at least once or twice, anyone else know of it? and then there was Wilby (near Yarrawonga) where I had my 1st race on a GT80B.

Started riding sidecars with Russ Bergmier at the Ballarto Rd track just outside of Seaford and mini bikes at Arcona (?) Park on the Princess Highway between Berwick amd Pakenham. Also remeber riding sub-juniors at Cerbrus naval base, rained and being on sand it became like quick sand. remember Grant Cramer stepping off his bike bogged to the axles and needing 4 blokes to set it free. The Hartwell club also started the MX track out the back of the Granite Park short circuit track. Also had a great time on the Rally Cross track at Calder which was televised on Channel 10. Back in vic at the moment and can't get over how cold it is, staying out at Pakenham. And yes it was worth the trip from Mackay. Go Sainters!
-
Giday Hoonster!
Just for your interest there was a track in Berwick at the old airport, I dont think there was ever any race meetings there but I know alot of big names in there day used to ride there. I used to go there on mates Honda amego and xr 75's, saw my first MR 50 there, still remeber it well. Talking to Tom Scanlan (dmcc member who sadley passed away two weeks ago) and going through Roger Harvey's book he said that there was a track in berwick in early days but not sure of the excate location. Roger would be a good one to talk to, he knows alot of history around the local area
Catch ya soon

Sure I've seen that somewhere on this forum before 8)

Another racetrack that was around from the mid 70's maybe until early 80's was Diamond Valley in Broadmeadows, they held race meetings from mini's to big bores about once a month until the urban sprawl got to close and they had to close it down.
-
I only ever went there once but thought that Mortlake was the coolest track for vintage racing I'd seen. When did it stop being used?
-
Tony is that Mark christian 54 .Yes Firko Morlake was a great track nice hill's am sure there were no jump's on that track 2
-
Tony is that Mark christian 54
Yep! ;D
I wondered if anyone would know who it was.
FWIW I think that's David Maddern from Mt. Gambier in the top shot. ???
I'll see if I can dig out some more.

Well it happened and was televised.I saw it although the names didnt mean much to me then. The topic came up when I went to WA for MXdN in 92 with a few of the old boys.
-
I also went to the International meeting at Calder Park, part of a 3 race series. It was hot, dry and dusty and the Aussies where not in the same league as the Euro boys. Trevor Flood had a part share in a motorbike shop on Nepean Highway, in the Reg Hunt Golden Mile, fronted by local car dealer Tony Rule. Lucky enough to meet all the internationals who enjoyed a beer or two and did minibike racing in the car park. Unsure if Bubba and Chad would do that. In the group was DeCoster, Joel Robert, Andy Robertson, Willie Bauer and a couple more. Would luv to go to Viper at Wonthaggi on the Weekend as I last rode that track in 74 and came second in the Vic Champs, Non Expert Division 1 section as they had just changes over from A, B, C grade. There was the two brothers from the Dandy club that crashed their cars into each other with one leaving the track for a beer run while the other was returning. Police nabbed Russel and me on the 850 norton on the Highway doing the beer run for the Dads as they were too pissed. Pity we were only 16. Coppers took us back to the dads who thoroughly gave it to us so they looked liked responsible parents. Have a good weekend Viper boys I'm back off on the Tiger airways. better assist by flapping the arms. Does anyone remeber the Tulip street practice track in Sandringham and the salt pans at Fisherman's wharf.

Anybody remember the 1979 Australian Minibike Champs at Bendigo. All red sand next door to the go kart track, only one race there, practised there a bit in later years the red sand was a by product from gold mining. Caloola Park dirt track and mx track still there but banned. What about the Shepparton club running a meeting in the quarrie where the gun club is on the Benalla side early 70's. Warracknbeal ran a dirt track on the trotting track in town from 1980 till 1985. St Arnaud from real early (60's?) till 1978 or 9. Campbells Creek,
-
Yep I raced at that meeting. I do remember that there was a heap of injuries during the 4 days. I think that track was at Marong just out of bendigo. That meeting was in the days when Aust. minibike champs had to be run on a track no one had ever ridden on so no one had an advantage.

Hey Dave, maybe it was Gary Adams not Gary Flood as I remembered. Was it a muddy race? The meeting that I saw wasn't dusty as number 8 mentioned but the total opposite. It was a total wash out , a real quagmire with both riders and bikes unrecognisable.Anyway I remember the commentators wrapping up this young Aussie bloke who won the race.Apparently it was part of a series but the organisers canceled the points for that muddy one. :)
-
I think Gary Flood was riding in England at the time and Trevor Flood had a broken wrist. And it was as dry as a wooden tit'.

Moto,
I think you must be thinking of another meeting,
KB
I think you are right about GF,
I remember at the Calder meeting standing on a corner when Joel Robert came round and stopped after shearing the sprocket off the factory Suzuki's hub,
Albrid,
I was at the Australian titles at Wallan when Gary Adams won the Aust Ulimited title on the AJS very dusty meeting,

If anyones interested I created an opportunity to examine the site of the Chistmas Hills track (arguably the best track in the state) last summer when Sugarloaf Dam was at a record low. Sadly I have to report the track is completely unrecognisable. I stood there for some time trying to visualise where it was but came up short. It seems that the track and all its features had been bulldozed big time. Can anyone verify that? I found the footings of the (I think) Ashmore farmhouse and little else. I took some photos and buggered off before I was sent to Guantanemo after being captured poking around Melbournes water supplies!
-
Talking to GMC the other day and the conversation turned to the old Wallan track on Ray Owens property. For the life of us neither of us could remember how to get there. Weirdly we had both tried to find it on Google Earth but to no avail. The best we could remember was "Take the Beveridge exit turn off" after that it all got a little vague...... Can anybody remember? Jerry
-
Good talking to you the other day Jerry, should have charged you by the hour though ;D ;D
Best as I can remember it was turn off the hume at Beveridge, then turn right into Old Sydney Rd.
It was somewhere on the left along Old Sydney Rd. or is this where I'm going wrong?
This is a good thread but it has cost me countless hours searching on Google Earth.
Was trying to find our old track Newtown as well, but couldn't seem to find any trace of it.

You guys got me thinking about the old Hallam track in Abbott Road (the old home of Dandenong Juniors before they merged with DMCC and went to Wonthaggi). It's been shut down for about 9 years, but the control tower & back fence are still visible..

Hoony, not sure how far you ever got with this. Was it kicked off again elsewhere?? Pity you never got many dates, surely people must know . . .
Anyway, we just went through 15 month VCAT hearing over Barrabool and dredged through all old docs and stuff we had. So many people out there that had info stashed away!!
Have inserted dates for Barrabool and Breakwater in Geelong (and put in alphabetical order ;D).

Too hard to read!
The letter says: 10/9/1962. To Sec. Geelong Sporting Motor Cycle Club,
In reply to your adv. in Sat. Geelong Advertiser. I would consider letting you have a course if it suited your purpose. I have plenty of hilly country probably suited for hillclimbs. I am 10 or 11 miles from Geelong.
Yours sincerely,
C.R. McAdam

There was the two brothers from the Dandy club that crashed their cars into each other
with one leaving the track for a beer run while the other was returning. Police nabbed
Russel and me on the 850 norton on the Highway doing the beer run for the Dads as
they were too pissed. Pity we were only 16. Coppers took us back to the dads who
thoroughly gave it to us so they looked liked responsible parents.
Hi Rosco,
I just put two and two together (because of the attached sidecar photo) - we were
both probably in the same club DMCC at same time, as I hung out with Russell Bergmeier
and Rob Portbury. (I'm 56 and grew up in Berwick)
People knew Russell for his sidehacks, but he was out there kicking butt in the solos as well.
No thumb, and all.
Remember those loose units Gary Pangbourne and Laurie Genova?!
I remember racing at the very first event at Wonthaggi - just a club day, pegged out in
the grassy paddock ... and so we left the Upper Packy track which had always been home track.
------------------
The Akoonah Park mini race was an absolute one-off event, as someone managed to
get approval. I couldn't believe they ran a race down there (bang in the middle of
two villages of Berwick and Beacy).
----------------
I was just a bit too old to be riding minis in the day (1972 and up) and kinda
hung with the older guys in DMCC. A few years back, Macca and I discovered that
we both lived in the same town Berwick - but never met - as he was about
three years younger. Which is quite a gap when a teenager. I remember
younger kids always hanging around when we were fanging about on the
several Berwick tracks. Macca was no doubt one of them.

70/71 used to practice on the sl70 and Honda dax at Tulip st, Sandringham, just on the other side of the Cheltenham Cemetary. Cyclone meshed vacant factory lot, lots of single tracks in heaps of directions, quite sandy. Learnt a big lesson, don't chase the hard edges when riding next to a cyclone mesh fence. Grabbed the left handlebar and I instaneously face planted.

i lived in that area, did you ride Farm Rd, Totals Rd and another sandy track between Warrigal road and Herald St all in Cheltenham area

Great thread guys
Who remembers the Coldstream/Lilydale track which is now a tip!
This track was frequented by the Flood brothers in the 1970s. Last time I was there would have been late '70s when I was about 16/17 years old, it was the first mx track I ever rode.
-
Hey Rosco, yeah i remember that track well you talk about in Sandringham of Tulip st. We use to call it "Talinga" because it was actually on Talinga rd. behind the Sandy drive inn. Rode there heaps around 74-75 on my XR75 with all my mates. We had a cubby house at the back of the cemetry on an old council dump. We used even run old cars around Talinga until the cops came and then we would all scatter. One of my good mates back then was Warren Westney and he was really fast too. I'm sure you would remember him too because he also raced Honda minis. Would got to that track each weekend with about 3 bucks of petrol and ride all day. Great memories of that place :).... regards Les

Yeah we were rapt to find this after so long of never actually knowing exactly when Barrabool took off. We all knew the stories of how the club advertised for a track (after losing one at Point Henry) and of the famous "letter" Clive wrote back offering his farm, and this turned up out of the blue! It will be preserved and put up on the clubroom wall (once things get settled! :-\).
Acts of generousity like this are few and far between - Clives legacy will not be be forgotten.

Can anyone remember a track at Coleraine?
I kinda remember racing somewhere like that in either '79 or '80 but never later than that.
I'm guessing it was part of the Western Centre series and was definitely not Cooper Park at Casterton..... ???
-
Used to go up to Coldstream with Chris Oldfield and Sam Skilling, must have been a tip area before the track as lots of debris as you came down off the drop off jumps. Anyone ride at the Centre Rd Oakliegh track just up from the VW factory towards the Springvale Rd junction. Had my first ride their on a big bike, KTM 125. Hit a hidden hole made by a bogged car and certainly appreciated all of the suspension and handling.
Roger, photos copied and will send tomorrow. Can you remember when the Pangbourne boys had the head on at the gates to the MX track. One going for beer the other one returning from the bottle shop?
-
Sometimes rode at Dandenong Minibike Track on Hammond Rd, we'd side-saddle our bikes about 5 k's from Carrum Downs through all the back roads.
-
I well remember the Coldstream track. Barreling down the straight in the winter mud and I speared off to one side layer it down and missed a plough shear by a couple of inches! Still have nightmares about that one. Also remember Chis Oldfield doing cross ups on his brothers Ossa Mick Andrews Replica.

Barra my father and the late Lyle Obrien use to tell me of the time they went to negotiate the use of the land with Clive, they had to sit and chat for hours( i think they said about 6hrs+ ) had many cups of tea and were played songs on the piano before they were granted use of the land at barrabool not many visitors out there at that time and after they left they still werent sure if they had permission to use it.

Hi Mav, so your dad must be Eddie? I see his name everywhere in club records!
That meeting with Clive sounds so familiar and 100% true I reckon! Had quite a few just like that with Clive and his wife Gert over the years - took hours to get to the point of the visit - talk about kill you with kindness!
-
Those tracks you fellas talked about brought back some good memories, one scramble track you forgot was Dobie from memory it was about ten miles before ya get to Ararat on the Western HWY very small place I think it only had two houses there, I've watched two races there in the early 60's. does anyone else remember that track. there's nothing there now the name isn't even on the map any more.
-
Hi Barra your right his name is Eddy he fought for the track to start but you have have continued the fight to keep it open, keep it up, good work so far but the fight is far from over by the look of it.Cheers Andrew
