Hello Jim,
are you the same jim from st Clair? that i met a while ago. Anyway if i wanted to ride at this pre 75 day at nepean- what is the shotest route to get on the track, do i have to join a club or get a license, pre register, pre scrutenere???? And is it only for pre 75 cause i really don't wish to kane my YZ125a.. would prefer to turn up on later bike maybe a 76RM that is a bit more bullet proof

-
WALLY
will there be any classic races in the nsw titles or just modern and a restricted invetation race
also you forgot club day on the 9th
cheers
-
Hi Wally, could you please advise me of the classes that will be run & the format for sat & sun as we have a fair hike from Griffith to Penrith , Pete Lee & myself are keen to come along for a ride.
-
hi grasy i know wally is off air, computer has crashed.give the good people at kelens kawasaki a ring 47214439.tell them that you are asking about the pre 75 meeting as they are helping in the nsw dirt track champs too.
-
Will do thanks Mick
-
I hear 25 lap trophy race @ Nepean on the saturday 1st August. Does anyone know if there r any other races on the sat. Am going just trying to work out when to leave.Would love to have ride later in mth @ titles if there was classic classes- wonder why Nepean did'nt call 1&2 august meeting NSW Classic Title, does'nt look to be on calender.
-
just the 25 lapper sat arvo,no others 52,campings available sat nite too,a slide show usually in the big tent, :P
-
Do you have to book for camping?
-
Regarding the 25 lap race what are the rules regarding re fueling. Does the bike have to re enter the pits or will there be a re fueling retreat ? Do you have to re fuel with a no running engine ? Probably a stupid question but I need the correct answer to prepare the bike.
-
Curly, you have to indicate whether your'e camping sat nite,(or not) on the entry form,
-
Thanks Mick
I won't be riding this year as I'm only just getting back into things.
I intend to have a go next year when I have a bike ready so I'll just be a spectator this year.
-
give the "club" a ring on 47214439 when it gets a bit closer to the meeting, pretty sure they just need an idea of numbers camping?
-
d'day all i'm back with our own old computer [these blokes dont know what old means], however i have been warned that this old fashioned 2001 model will fall off its perch and crash with permanent destruction at any time soon. meanwhile my info re the nsw title event at nepean on the last weekend in august will see sliders mixed with others as per the m.o.ms. there are quite a few slider riders who are not necessarily top grade riders who are nervous about mixing lines with riders on conventional style machines but would like to ride on this history making event. it appears that there is is a last ditch effort to to have a slider only race as a support event. of cause this does not preclude entry into the main events by slider riders and im sure some of this countries excellent performers will do just that. the weekend overall should be most enjoyable with some displays planned and the catered dinner at the track on the sat. night expected to see lots of faces from past adventures enjoying the camerarderry. the race calling on the day will be ably performed by old merrylands club member, racontour, and wit who has vast experience in all things connected with motorcycling, Lester Morris. Lester's experience in race calling at bathurst oran park and various other locations including motocross will no doubt include many amusing annocdotes...unfortunately i wont be able to be present this year at the pre 75 two day event due to family committment and i may miss out on a ride at the nsw titles because my poor old slider has some sort of internal miss adventure which i may not be able to rectify in time. cheers wally.
-
My last ride at Nepean was an inter club meeting in approx 1980.
I was making a comeback from a bad get off at the Syd Showground in 1977.
I had a friends slider in the wrong gear out of the start and was last away, I went for the inside line into turn 1 when a guy on a YZ465 jumped on the anchors late and I was already going for the inside line and left with no where to go but clip his rear wheel and the collarbone flip.
In my opinion Sliders & MX bikes don't MIX.
Having said that,
In reality with time constraints they have to mix.
In the words of Chop.
Toughen the FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF up.
-
C'mon guys, who's going and what race number should I look for?
-
sent my entry in today

-

-
hope I gave my fax no.
-
Who is doing the 25 lapper on Saturday & what is your weapon of choice . Col Moody if you are reading his would like to see the big Maico out there !!!. No team racing this time. ;)
-
Grasy the plan at this stage is to get out to Nepean for a bit of a look on Sunday. If I dont see you their will catch up with you and the other member of Team Riverena at Barleigh Ranch.
-
Does anyone know if Darryl & Lyndal Buttler are still involved with early DT stuff?
I have seen the name Dave Buttler riding Superbikes and think it was more than likely they're son.
-
Curly, your right he is there son. The last time I saw Daryl and his wife was at Eastern Creek maybe 2 or 5 years ago. At the time the young bloke was riding a Gulf Western Oil sponsored GSXR1000 Suzuki and was going ok.
You obviously know/remember them. I have'nt met there son but have many memorys of Lyndall pushing Daryl's Hagon Bullie around the pits at various Dirt Track meetings in the late sixtys to early/mid seventys. They were both real clubmen back then and I'm sure they still are. Would be good if they both make it to Nepean next weekend.
-
Great people, dedicated Dirt Trackers.
Darryl's dad was also named Dave and was a good friend of my fathers.
Darryl spent some time in the Old Dart on Grasstrack and was heavily involved with the Fairfield club along with my cousins Kenny & Laurie, both original Sidecar Boy's. There is a chance they will be at Nepean this weekend as well.
Should be a fair bit of B.S. flowing on Sat night.
-
the first time i met dave butler senior was when i was about 9 yrs old on my old man's boat in georges river woronora river etc, next time was when i joined merrylands club when i got out of the 'nashos in 1957. he was a merrylands member then. Darryl was responsible for getting me back out to nepean about 15 yrs ago by giving me a ride on his hagon in a lunch break on a club day.one ride since '72 and back into it! both Darrel and Lyndal are great ambassadores for the sport. cheers wally.
-
Dave Buttler snr was a pretty good sidecar rider by all acct's. Sorry you can't make it this weekend Wally, may catch up with you at the State Titles or Barleigh Ranch later in the year.
-
a good days racing was had by all we got 3 rounds of 20 races in.my legs are like jelly.now i have to go and clean 3 bikes
thanks to penrith for a good day

I agree with Jim that it was a great day at Nepean. The entry numbers were woeful but that could be down to some guys getting ready to travel to Conondale for the Nats but that doesn't excuse the pure dirt track blokes who didn't show. This is one of the showcase meetings of the year so you'd figure a seriously high entry.
Having got that off my chest, those who did make the effort had a ball on a very loose track. It was great to see David Gras come all the way from Grifith to take out Saturday arvos 25 lap feature face. He shot away on his XL250 to never be headed. Billy Unsworth (360 Pursang) fought an all Bultaco battle for 2nd and 3rd with young "Olly" on John Imries ex John Hines Astro.
As usual Jonesy creamed the slider class on his old Hagon Jawa but it was great to see our Jim Garvey finally get onto the track on his XT500 Hagon and get some practice time on what's a potentially quick bike. It was also great to see Alan Weaver travel down from the Gold Coast race his Hagon LTR. I had to leave before the presentations so I'm not certain who won what but it was good to catch up with a number of forum members, especially Curly (and brother Carl), Nifty and his cool DT1 and new RT1, Matcho Mick and a number more. The day had a scary moment when Mark Peatman high sided the big 650 Yamaha and face planted pretty hard. He was carted off to hospital with what looked like concussion and perhaps a broken thumb and other breaks. He hit the deck with such force it split his helmet! I wish Mark all the best for a speedy recovery.
Let's hope that we can get a more enthusiastic entry level for the Raymond Terrace Nats in September.

It was a good weekend despite the lack of entries. Good to put faces to names and catch up with other people from years past. Plenty cold on Sat night and more than enough to drink left me a bit fuzzy on Sunday.
Sorry if I missed anyone but it sounds like there will be a lot of past legends at the dinner on the 29th. May catch some of you there.

John Imrie on one of Hinesys ugly old Astros, Lenny Tickner and #24 Peter Lee about to lap them I suspect.

An interesting American style Kawasaki Bighorn 350. The frame is based on a stock Bighorn and was done back in the early 70's using photos and factory advice when you couldn't get the genuine American stuff.

Billy Brown had a cancerous kidney removed 5 weeks ago and you wouldn't have known. He and his famous old Clockwork Orange Monty performed as if nothing had interfered.

How cool is that Bighorn! Great picks.
Cheers Steve.

Great Weekend at Nepean, the club and its many workers and helpers did such a superb job running the meeting and making everyone feel extemely welcome. Thanks so much to Christine, Herb, Mick and anyone else I have fogotten to mention. I hope Mark Peatman recovers from his injuries and will be back on track shortly. Great to see Brett Chipperfield back on the bike. As Firko mentioned, it is such a shame numbers were down but Peter Lee and myself thought this would be a great prelude to progess to the Aussie tiltes and we had a blast. We both spent the last months of our lives preparing our XL250 motosports for this 25 lapper and wasn't it an absolutely great race that riders and spectators thouroughly enjoyed. It wasn't until about three quarters of the race that Peter Lee and myself caught up with Billy Unsworth (and in his words "I knew you'd be comin'). Thanks Billy, was great to track you down on our little 250 Motosports. See you all at Barleigh Ranch in September.
-
GREAT PICS FIRKO....
-
numbers where down from last year.i think the club/clubs are all concentrating on the state titles at the end of august.i have heard that the day has raised up to $1800.00 for the charity.it can only get better next year.
-
it can only get better next year
I hope you're right Mick, as this meeting has gone downhill dramatically in recent years. What do you have to do to get riders to enter? There were only a couple of Heaven riders there, is dirt track below their lofty standards? What's the problem, whay don't 75% of Sydneys vintage racing population turn up at a race that's put on specifically for them?
These blokes would be the first to whinge and whine like big sooks when clubs like Penrith pull the plug on vintage altogether. This forum will be full of the usual suspects making all sorts of excuses as to why the sport is dying while denying the real reason....They're too fu*king lazy to get out there and support the sport. It's always someone elses fault. Let's hope we can get serious support for the DT Nats at Raymond Terrace in September. Why can't dirt track attract the same enthusiasm the recent Conondale Nats had?
-
Hard to say why entries were down Firko, first time back to Nepean for me since 97.One things for sure , the format is a ripper. The perpetual trophy that Dave won was an eye-opener, dating back to 1953.Back in the 70's when I was chasin meetings Nepean was a long way to travel for us only to get there and a shower call the show off, with the oiled surface gone and the great track preparation the place is fantastic.Maybe if Christine and Mick promoted it as NSW classic titles or similar. We were really impressed by the way the meeting was run and the standard of racing. Well Done Nepean!
-
Well I'm doing my little bit, I bought a 2 Valve Jawa Engine the other day that will slot straight into a Hagon I've kept for nearly 30 years. It's been nearly that long since I rode one so it will be interesting to learn all over again at 50. I don't intend to set the world on fire but that's not the point is it.
I agree with 52, it would be a good idea to promote the meeting as Pre 75 State Champs including a battle of the Twins maybe.
-
GREAT photos firko
-
I picked up my copy of J Scaysbrooks mag old bike australasia today and was Pleased to see a page on the Nepean 2 day event. A few interesting people shots were to be seen including some i wanted to chat to but did'nt see them on the day and probably would not have recognised them any how, since none of us thought to wear name tags. I think the article could have easily included lots more photos and stories ,but there you go. At least i saw a pic of the back of my head! I hope VMX mag has coverage in the next issue about this historic event. I have a copy of every issue of VMX and lately have been dissapointed in the lack of coverage of dirt track events from OZ and US. I also especially liked some of the old issues' stories on great riders and personalities like Laurie Alderton and other riders who rode in everything from scrambles short circuit and road racing, road trials etc. I remember riding at Moorebank alongside Eric Hinton Paul Giles Matt Daley and heaps of great personalities and great al-rounders. And there are a lot of the old stagers still having a go. Cheers Wally
