Could be either '84,'85 or '86 does it have horizontal slots or square boxes on the side plates?

if it is standard first year of front disc, rear drum was 84 but then from piccies I see so was 85 and 86.  Sorry cant help with VIN but I am sure the Honda gurus will come through  ;D

JH2 means made in japan, sounds funny, but bikes made in US and other places had different prefixes.. Unable to assist with the rest as about that time i believe you need a total of 17 figures etc in the VIN to identify the year and model

Barry is right:

JH2 - made in Japan
MEXXX - vehicle description code
X or (0-9) - check digit to ensure VIN is legal only
B, C, D etc indicates model year with B being 1981, C 1982, D 1983 onwards etc
Letter to signify plant produced in in respective country (A,B,C,D,E,F,K,M,R,S,T,4) - (Iains C was made in Saitama in Japan)
then sequential production number

So now if you can get the next letter - which should be E,F,G for 84, 85 or 86 you will have your answer.

10th digit of the frame number always indicates the year with the cr
eg
a=80
b=81
c=82
d=83
etc etc ......

Thanks,  I will have to get more information from him, it does have horizontal slots in the side plates and yes its complete and has just had over $1000.00 spent on a rebuild, the bike is all original and would clean up well with a bit of tlc

G'day Rob, here is some pics of the 3 years 1984-1986, sorry pics are poor quality.

assuming it is standard the following applies.

1984 & 85 have ATAC power valve equiped engines 1986 is HPP Power valve, 1984 & 85 front disc are drilled, 1986 has slotted disc.
1984 & 85 have silver rims, 1986 has gold.

Thanks Hoony,  I will have to check the vin to be sure, but going by your pics it looks like it could be a 84.

Nice Pre 85 weapon for you Rob. I had the '86 model and I'm sure it'd be every bit as quick as something around today. No doubt you'll get it as nice as your other bikes....... :P

Viper,

If the side plates are original it would either be an '85 or '86 the '84 had 4 squares where the horizontal slots are.
