Title: 1975 DT125 or not?
Post by: walloway on June 01, 2009, 05:52:31 pm
Has anyone got a clue what this is. Eng and frame number say it is a 10/75 DT125,  578-000158.
Certainly doesn't look like a DT. It has xt/tt500 shocks at the rear and a Honda front end. Foot pegs are welded to the frame and all welding looks "factory" quality, especially shock mounts. Any ideas?

the upper shock mounts and swingarm don't look original to me but I'll leave it to the darkside experts ;) maybe the frame was cut and the whole rear upright/subframe and mounts rewelded in a section. Any other welds to be seen that may indicate a cut'n'shut? Looks very much like my old DT/MX175 I had many moons ago!

It looks like a DT with a fairly ordinary LTR conversion done, although the rear frame loop looks far better than most hack-jobs.

The rare MX125C is similar to this bike, but the upper shock mounts are lower/further foward, and they run the YZ125C style motor (no auto-lube, painted black, bigger fins etc). The MX-C also has alloy rims, and non-cross-over exhaust, plastic airbox, etc.

The plastic side cover is probably YZ125C.

Other clues would relate to seat mounts (hinged or bolt-on), steering lock, exhaust mount near carby, and blinker mounts.

A pic of the rear brake pedal and footpeg would also help.

Hmmm... upon further inspection, it looks like it might have a MX/YZ-A barrel.
Is there a port for the oil injection?
What's the spacing of the intake boot/reed block bolts?
What's the prefix cast into the barrel (either on the side of the intake, or just above the base gasket).

Thanks for the interest. Part of the mystery is solved , it has a 175cc barrel ,prefix 45500, on it. Oil injection port ,yes. Reedblock bolt centre's are 55mm and 48mm approx. Engine appears to have been black earlier on.

i'm going to go out on a limb here and say the frame is the real deal MX125c,
the airbox is a good clue as it looks to fit well and be of an MX type design,
swing~arm and shocks look MX125c,
the wheels look to be DT with the steel rims,
Barrel is MX175 a/b if it's 455 prefix,
Head looks to be DT {low compression},
Pipe is definately DT, yukky poo......,
578 prefix shows DT125,
565 prefix is MX125c,
but, a 570 prefix should be an MX175c. which i've never heard of.
but should you be interested in selling this beast and live near Brisbane, i'd be interested. ;D
cheers.

Now that we've got the extra pics, I reckon I agree with Vandy - the frame, shocks, brake pedal and foot-pegs are MX125C.
Although virtually everything else seems to be DT or MX-A, rather than MX-C.

Shame that its been so butchered, but I want it too (and I don't care whether you live near Brisbane or not...;D ).

a few more shots.
Motor turns over with plenty of compression and feels smooth, will take head off for an inspection.
Would possibly be interested in selling /trading , need cash or parts to finish off a B50MX/Triumph.

race/duct tape works well when you are sitting back contemplating what to do.
Thanks to Mick and Nathan and all for the info on the DT/MX hybrid.
