Title: '86/87 510 4 stroke
Post by: evo550 on May 30, 2009, 05:48:09 pm
Does anyone know if these motors bolt straight into a 2 stroke husky chassis of same vintage?

I'm pretty sure they will, as the 4 stroke uses the 2 stroke bottom end.

I saw that Dead Dog Racing had a bike that had a motor transplant back the other way, with a 430 air cooled motor in place of the original 510 fourstroke one . I wonder if they had any drama fitting the pipe on this bike though, as the '83/'84 frames have a bit of a dog-leg bend in the front downtube to allow clearance for the sideport exit exhaust header on the air cooled two-strokes (the fourstroke frame would have a straight downtube). The water-cooled two-strokes have a centre exit exhaust header.

They totally F#$@&d the frame with that conversion, the tank is also completely rooted. Can't believe he would even consider putting that up for sale as anything other than a parts bike.

The Husky with the XR Honda motor looks like a really nice bike & a neat, well done job. But I can't understand why everyone who builds a hybrid bike with this type of motor, always chops out the bottom cradle of the frame & uses the motor as a stressed member. Even though the Honda came out with this set-up, can't the frame still have a bottom cradle for a bit more strength & rigidity? To me , a motocross bike just doesn't look right without a full cradle frame & you would think that it would have a bit of sideways flex in it without one .

just a question, the bike Marc has shown is not a 86/87 model is it? it looks earlier. When did the water cooled 4 stroke husqvarnas come out? Wouldnt a 86/87 510 be single shock not ITC twins?

The bike marc has shown is an '83 model, '84 was the last twin shock. Most Husky's were watercooled in '85.

so that would mean evo550 is asking about a water cooled 510 then and not a aircooled one as he has asked about 86/87 model.
Thats why i was confused as to why there were pics of air cooled 510's

Mick that 84 500XC is awesome! Your mate has done a great job on the resto.  Bet it is great to ride - the 84's look and handle great in my view :) :) :)
