Title: BEFORE and AFTER photos
Post by: ted on May 28, 2009, 07:06:26 pm
Put up your before and after resto photos with a true dollar amount as to what it owes you.
This will give new restorers a better idea of what it costs to do a project.

This YZ 465 H cost $500.00 to buy and it owes me ( with my time included / sourcing parts and passing tools ) just on $20,000.00

Just about all of the work was shopped out as i am not mechanically minded or have the time to do it anyway.

I will add a YZ 125 H in a couple of weeks when it is finished

I reckon including purchase price my "racer" 414 would owe me about 10 G, probably more. I'm too ashamed to put any before and after pics because it doesn't look a lot different!  :-\
That is a might nice '65. I reckon that they're the Yamaha to have.....

Here's a few pics of my 465, I scored this one for $300.00 it was a bit of a basket case that was left out in the weather leaning against a shed for four years, unfortunately I had cleaned it up before I took the before shots. It was full of the usual surprises once you start pulling it apart.  Fortunately I can and have done all the work myself and it owes me around $2000.00.

i should have shopped where you did for my bits....I would have thought new tyres, tubes, rim bands, seat cover, bars, grips, pipe, muffler, sprockets, chain, chain sliders and rollers, brake linings, stickers, fork boots.electroplating, painting, fork polishing, alone would have cost over $1,700.00.
What would you estimate your hours invested would be at say $50 per hr

I'm lucky enough to work for a Yamaha dealer and get the parts at cost, all the sandblasting, painting, polishing, rebuilding wheels, engine, suspension etc I did myself. As for how many hours I have spent on it, I wouldn't have a clue I did it in dribs and drabs over about three months, the most time consuming task was the sandblasting that was easily two or three days work on its own. I think if you condensed it all up I would say around four weeks in total.

I just spent $445 on stainless steel spokes. plus close to $700 having my hubs and brakes fully refurbished. Is this a normal cost as I am new to the scene and this really freaked me out somewhat.

Yeah I suppose, if you want to look at that way.
The way I look at it is, that's $8000.00 in labor I have saved, it hasn't come out of my pocket.

Lucky we are not rebuilding cars, Hey!!

So long as the "better" half never see hidden invoices and accounts and only continue to marvel at the great "asset" build up from utter scrap!

Box of XL250K0 bits for $150 with completed ride (excluding time) of ~$2,500 and untold $'s of enjoyment!

Beautiful bike, Ted. What's that saying about 'the quality will be remembered long after the price is forgotten'?

I just spent $445 on stainless steel spokes. plus close to $700 having my hubs and brakes fully refurbished. Is this a normal cost as I am new to the scene and this really freaked me out somewhat.

Price for spokes seems a bit high, but definitely in the ball-park.
Price for the hubs seems very high, but depends on what was done to them, exactly.

Professional painting is very expensive - if you can dodge that (DIY, mate's rates, or accepting a lesser finish) you can save a stack of money.

Personally, I've seen lots of people cost themselves a lot of extra money by commiting to fixing the parts that came from the bike, rather than sourcing replacment bits. For example, you'd never spend $700 on fixing a pair of Yamaha hubs, because they're worth very little - it wouldn't take much time or money to find a pair of servicable hubs for <<$100.

Another trap is to equate the price you paid with the quality, rather than judging things on their merits. If your project bike cost $500, and you're offered a parts bike for $1000, don't dismiss it simply because its more expensive than the original. Look at them both with an open mind, work out the value of the parts it will provide and then make the decision.

It also gets easier as you go along - you make contacts, you learn who to trust, you learn what's 'used but servicable', you build a stock-pile of parts and people feel pity for you. I don't think that any of my bikes have cost me over $2500 yet, most being well under.
But then again, I have access to a pretty good machine shop, and none of my bikes are a patch on either of the YZ465s pictured...

My Cappra project has a $4500 budget all up - we'll see how close I am when (if?) it is finished.

Yeah "nathan s", I sent off my hubs components  (bultaco frontera) to be refurbished,..brake drums relined ,new brake ,shoes and a few other fiddly things that had to be done to get them ship shape.,  I guess what was costly was the time it took to polish everything up .I,m not complaining about the workmanship as they have come back looking like new. But it was a bit more than was expected. ..I also wanted to get some chroming done on other parts but the price of chroming now is going through the roof due to pollution laws. And a lot of Chrome shops are closing up for that reason....  I have spent a lot of time in Indonesia over the years and I know of a chroming shop in Bali not far from Kuta ,so when I head over in october I will be taking a load of bike parts with me to be chromed. I was in Java last xmas and could have got my rims gold anodised for a song..there,s alwys next time.

Not that this is anything like the same league as the other bikes in this thread, but probably worth the exercise while we're on the topic.

Donor bike: $200 (part of a package deal), Snowy76.
Non-reed top end: $0, swap with FactHunt (where is Kurt?).
New piston: $50, Ebay.
Rebore: $90, local engine reconditioner.
Engine porting: $0, me (and lots of time on the phone to Lozza...).
IT250 electronic ignition: $100 (? - it was ages ago), Mad Max.
Pipe: $30 in bends, local muffler shop.
Plug cap, plug, fuel hose, etc: $20, local bike shop.
30mm RT1 carby: $10, part of a big pile of stuff I bought off Tim754 years ago.
Air-filter: $20, local car-parts shop.
New handlebars: $90, local bike shop.
New grips: $15, local bike shop.
New lever blades: $20, local bike shop.
Paints: $50, local hardware store.
Fuel tank: $5, part of a big pile of stuff I bought off Tim754 years ago.
Tank strap: $10, local saddler + stuff laying around.
Footpegs: $46, pit-bike shop.
Decent forks : $80, local wrecker.
New fork seals: $30, local bike shop.
Front rim: $0, came on a $200 YZ125E.
Front spokes: $35, Epay.
Front tyre: $20, local gun rider.
Rear rim: $0, my shed.
Rear tyre: $0, a favour from MBoddy.
Rear guard: $0, Adam S.
Front guard: $0, my shed.
Front number plate: $0, my shed.
Side number plates: $0, Adam S.
Numbers and back-grounds: $20, local sign-writer (materials only).
Oils etc: $50, local bike shop.

Call it $1000 and you'd be on the money.

I think that covers everything that I've spent money on, or would normally have expected to spent money on. Everything that I haven't mentioned either came on the bike (seat, shocks etc) or came out of my pile of parts that "might come in handy one day" (cables, chain, kill-switch, etc)...
My work also sponsored some bits and pieces (legitimately - the big boss insisted on a clean up, so a lot of stuff was saved from the bin), and use of tools like the bead blaster and the welder.

In hindsight, it was a good bike to start with - the botton end and gearbox are sweet and haven't needed to be touched, the frame is clean and straight, etc.

Here it is, ready to be loaded onto the ute to go to CD6 and then the Nationals.

And here's a photo that I think is cool but can't think of a better place to put...

That last pic Nathan - priceless.

I've got a pic of my boy when he was like that crawling through the frame of a GT750 Duke and bikes have been in his blood since then, All being well we'll see him at HEAVEN meets in the not too distant future! They have to be the best 'before and after' photos parents can have especially when bikes are in the family !

You should post a before of that terrible VR mate !!!

This is a great thread!  It's handy to know what some items cost, and also what some of the typical items are that people replace.  Love it.  I'd post my KX125 but it's now lost it's spark!  So it doesn't qualify yet.

Yep it all depends on what you can or can't do yourself

I had 2 off these Red devils and did them as a side by side project not to concourse but to what I liked.

The cheap part of any resto is zinc plating, I had every nut, bolt spring, axle etc replated for both bikes for 70.00 bucks and makes the difference in looks.

I had the local paint shop do the red colour matched to the new guards I bought for 80 bucks and that is enough paint to do 4 bikes.

Time spent would be around 60 hours per bike.

Rims are the standard rims sanded and powdercoated including the hubs and re-plated spokes, each wheel owns me 30.00 bucks including new bearings and seals (have my own powder coating plant helps!) but if I was doing for someone I charge 30 bucks a hub (to bead blast and powder coat) and same for a rim.

Photo is from CD 5 and at this point in time the bike had done 2 seasons of racing

Ted at the end of the day it's only money (yours thank god)  and it looks like you have done a grouse job and we're all glad you did it.

Thinking about the money side of things for to long takes all the fun right out of it. For me anyway.

Absolute wreck when I got this - in fact there were couple of bikes in there and even some Yamaha parts.  I hadn't restored before so everything got down to the best I could (and outsourced a lot as well coz I also am not the best mechanic out there) - owed me (minus labour) around $6000.  Next resto was a 1982 RM250Z and I reckon the costs were half that once you work out what you can do and where to go ;D
