Title: Tyre sizes: 4.60 = ?
Post by: Nathan S on May 10, 2009, 12:11:35 pm
What's a 4.60x18 equilivant to, using the modern, metric sizing system?

Is it smaller or larger than a 4.50?
(A 4.10 is pretty much a 100/90, making it smaller than a 4.00 which is essentially a 100/100)

Or something else?

4.60 is a low profile 82% series which is also what a .10 is. All other low profile inch tyres are 85%

standard inch size tyres have a 100 % aspect ratio.

-a 4.50 is a standard inch size and according to my info is a 4.25/85-4.50/85 low profile inch which is the same as a 120 metric
-standard inch 4.00 is equivalent to a 4.60 low profile inch which is the same as a 110 metric.

in metric you would look at a 110/100 or a 120/90 or even a 130/80 would be pretty close (depending on brand)

kobby tyres can be measured in 2 ways.
for 80 and 90 series metric tyres this from the outside edges of the knobs
for 100 series metric tyres its from sidewall to sidewall.
this is why a new metric 100/100 x18 is close in width to an old metric 120/80 X 18

i have compared a standard inch size 3.50 to a low profile 4.10 inch tyre in the same brand and there is stuff all difference if any.

what bike is it for?

Ah, yes, as I expected - as confusing as buggery!

The specific question relates the the KDX200, but more info/knowledge is always good. If I was to walk into my local shop and buy a new tyre for it, I'd just get a 100/100 (although I'd be happy with a 110/100 too).

However, I'm not prepared to spend $110+ on a tyre for it, so I'm looking at alternatives.

There's a guy advertising in Just Bikes offering cheap Chinese tyres, and I'm trying to work out which way to jump.

He's got 4.10 and 4.60 tyres in the olllllllddddd style Metzeler/Barum type pattern, and also 4.50s in the Dunlop K695 pattern.
I intend to buy a couple of the 4.10s for various non-race bikes (because the size is right and the pattern looks right on the older bikes, unlike a lot of more modern tyres). I bought a pair of the old style tyres from him ages ago, and the quality was OK - but I sold both of those tyres on bikes, so I can't refer back to them.

if you want cheap but pretty good quality try Kenda or Kings. i know a guy who used a Kings 4.60 on a WR400 yam for trail use and he was wraped with how it wore on the dirt roads and bitumen and it was a full road legal knobby too.

for the 200 i would go with the 110/100 or 100/100. have a look at a Kenda trackmaster 100/100 very aggressive pattern and road legal.

Is that Logan distributors who has tyres?. i want to get a set of IRC's off them but didnt see them offered in this months issue.
