OK, it must just be me, but I was just looking at Ajay's pic of his KX250 and it reminded me again how much I love the look of bikes with downpipes. My RM125M, KX250s/125s, Ossa Phantoms, RH Suzukis, you name it they just look right. And given I didn't get into bikes until up-pipes were the go, I can't explain it. I even think TS400s look hot with those huge downpipes.
Is there any hope for me? If I had the money, I'd stock my garage with those things! Especially the KXes.
Does anyone agree or is this just a strange side effect of growing older?

Not so Hot when its banging on the ground after a jump snals the back stay, aka TM :'(, but on the other side, looks smooth and tasty when its on you Dt bike.
Depends, practicallity has some input. :P
But then again there as some bikes that wouldnt look any good without some nice chambers ;)
-
yup! I have the same affliction Greame. If it has a down pipe it looks the goods no matter what it is! I even see the newer models up at the dirt track dropped down and running nice bling downpipes. While these are current models it dates them slightly in appearance and they actually begin to appeal to me simply becuse of the downpipe. For me a downpipe 'typically' means I'm looking at something pre'75..my favs ;D

yep nothing sexier than a good down pipe, Geoffs were modeled on Phar Lap.

Looks like I am in a minority of one (as usual), but I reckon they look primitive compared to a tidy up pipe, e.g. 74 Husky Mag 250. Yes I am biased...
-
Enduro was my first love so downpipes were a hinderance and we overlooked in the search for ground clearance rather than performance.
We bolted on Torque and other up pipe chambers looking for a bit more oompf , god thay are fugly. Always reminded me of a carpet python eating a possum. Then there was always the BBQ'd thigh to contend with.
Down pipes still look like they have swallowed a possum but the artistic lines just follow the form of the bike rather than cutting it in half.
My favourite ever chambers was on my gt750....... 3 in to 3 ...fat... chrome ... and fook didnt they work well 8)

this is a real tidy look 8)

Not so Hot when its banging on the ground after a jump
Thats what I like best about them, they keep me in work ::)
-
would you be able to make a trick set for an rd250 thanks Michael. :)
-
Yikes those welds Noel best that stays in the dark(don't forget stage 2 with that cylinder) ;D Up or down they all represent there own challenges. The torque arm lug on this gave me some headaches with routing of the pipe.

yer i know, who asked me ;D

is that Ken Smiths KX?

I think that a lot of the genuinely good looking bikes happened to be fitted with down-pipes, but I don't think that makes down-pipes pretty in themselves.
I mean, the standard pipe on a CR125M doesn't send anyone's heart racing... does it!?
-
Well... yes. A bit...
True, some genuinely nice bikes just happen to have down pipes (the KX250 again), but for me the downpipe is a part of what makes them attractive. I dunno why. I especially like those downpipes that dump into a single integrated cylindrical muffler, like the Circle F pipe I had on my TM125. And some of those pipes on the dirt trackers, very nice.
Now don't misunderstand, I'm not pinning posters of CR125s or KX250s on the dunny door, I just like the look. It works for me. It somehow gives a bike a certain feel or emotional cue that a bike with an up pipe doesn't have. I love the look of say a 79 CR250, or 80 YZ250G, or Kent Howerton's works RM, but the pipe is not part of what makes those things look good.

The original Hodaka 125MX Super Combat down pipe are sweet. No photo OK

'The Super Combat' Now your talking nice. I thought I was the only person in Australia who thought they looked nice ::) Darcy #674

Is this one of those? Snapped at CD5.

I started out racing in the 70's on a Super Rat, I'm so sorry I ever sold it :'(.Darcy

Always wanted an old Hoddy but like all the oddball bikes no-one seemed to want they are rare as rocking horse poo now days :( I'd also love a Carabella, or a Fantic or a Simonini or an Ancillotti, or a TGM, or a Gori, or even a Zundapp! Regardless of any stigma attached I'd have any one of them warts and all..with a down pipe fitted of course!! ;D
-
My opinion is any pipe that is hand crafted out of small sections is hot. Up or down. The more welds the better(welded neatly of course).
