Stew, just today spotted 2x '74 TM250 frames for $50 each. Problem is they'd need to be shipped from the US. Almost a viable proposition though all things considered ;)

Geez $50  :o  at that price ya need to get this bloke on the job
Here at OzVMX we received this email from Marc Shade:

Need help with shipping from the US?

As many OzVMX regulars would know, Buddy Johnson in the States offers assistance with getting goods sent to Australia for those buying from US eBay sellers that won't ship internationally.

He's provided that service for a lot of Aussie buyers for a while now, but he's found that he's starting to get requests to ship entire bikes. That's pretty much out of the question - Buddy can help out where he can with smaller items, but the really big stuff is a bit hard to manage.

As he says, "I do the repackaging and forwarding of parts as I can do it in the evening after work and take to the Post Office the next day on my lunch hour as long as it weighs 70LBs and under( I can not ship frames anymore as the USPS did away with Surface Shipping and now only offer Air Mail and the frames are over girth). I do not have the time to go to the Ports Authority and deal with Customs as required to ship complete bikes".

So, bear this in mind if you are thinking of using Buddy's services. As long as it's only smaller parts, he'll do the customs forms and repackage if necessary then post to Australia for a small fee & the shipping costs.

You can check Buddy's credentials on eBay where his seller name is "maicobuddy38f".

I wouldn't have a clue of postage costs Stew but I'd imagine no change from about $150-$175 or thereabouts. Sounds expensive sort of but for an item that simply isn't available here it isn't bad at all ;)

All costs would be covered, if you on sold it once it was here/wouldn't they  ???
Cheers Alison

yeeees :-\ but then one would be without a frame again :'(  I was thinking 150ish to send just 1 frame ;) could get them over in a container but I'm the impatient type and a plane sounds much faster than a boat :D all hypothetical as I have my much loved TS's to play with and they for some reason appeal to me more than a TM ;D

Doc I would be interested in one of those frames for around that price. Does it include the swing arm?
Would it be cheaper to ship if you got both one for oldfart one for me.

I am not in a hurry so cheapest shipping option would be best for me I am south of Brisbane
So I could probably collect from Oldfarts Place.

Gents,

Be very careful guestimating the cost of shipping a frame from US in the mail.  Its little short of astronomical.

A VMX friend in the US looked into it for me about 6mths ago & came to conclusion you'd get little change from US$500!! (as I recall) Just ridiculous.

I looked into it myself just using info on the web & came to a similar ballpark figure (tho a bit less). There maybe other cheaper options, but I quickly gave up on the idea.

If anyone knows more realistic options, I'd love to hear them.

Love the project Oldie. I see no prob using mod'd TS frame. They're actually quite light. I do suggest you brace the swingarm 'arms' near the pivot as the stock swingarm is very flimsy & seems to me to account for much of their somewhat undesireable handling 'quirks'.

Love to see more progress pics

The is no sea mail out of the US these days unfortunately, it's all by air so hence the cost. $500 is about right as it's $2000 to get a complete bike pulled apart and boxed as parts sent from Japan via sea mail (1 month). There are several agents who will ship to Australia from the US as part of a container, all out of Longbeach Ca. You pay by volume, not by weight about 500kgs/1 cubic meter is about $500.

look at it this way if they want $45-00 for an air box  :o    forget it I'll keep plugging away on my project  :)

I'm probably way off with my guesstimate but eh, it doesn't cost anything to ask ;) awaiting a reply from the guy. I hate to gloat but fortunately I've had a '74 TM250 frame and swingarm for my project in stock for a couple of years so I've been spared from this rarity dilema ;D

What don't you have 'in stock', eh, Doc?
I think that your shed in Brisvegas is more like Alladins Cave than a humble shed

it does infact resemble a cave 42..the bat cave that is! :D you have to be careful you don't trip over all the crap :P amongst John Wests stuff are a few decent items..I'd really like a nice big shed so I could get all the stuff out and play :) that's another project ::)

Give them a call and they can give you the details but basically send frame by post to their guy at US yard with all details on frame and it will be packed and sent in next container.

Some things have changed so do your homework, peter Leahy now has a MIN... charge of $100 ( wanted to bring a motor IN) plus add in you customs, quarentee inspection fee etc and your out to around the $300 mark even for just a motor.    Plus if its a bike with no title you need and should be getting it brought down into parts.

I have found posting everything but the motor and frame to be the cheapest way so far, but as per above the new min....  makes me think its time to find alternative options

Update ,  Poor old girl has been waiting patiently for it's turn, so today I added the foot brake along with cable guide and spring return and added a pedal adjuster for good measure .
Brake pedal is off a Rm 125 along with foot pegs from same year ???  possible 1984

This project  has been sitting in the corner for at least 4 months patiently waiting my attention ::)   Too fuggin cold to work so decided it was time to fire up me welder along with grinder.

I was not happy with the way it was looking ( ugly TS down tube ) . What the heck there  are plenty of TS  frames out there ;D
Fisrt up I cut out the complete down tube about 40 mm down from seat rails and 55mm above pivot point

Bent up 2 new rails allowing for a Rm 125 b air box ......     re- used old engine mounts - just put a cut thru the centre to close them up as I have used 19mm OD x 2mmm tube ....suzuki had 22 x 2
Still undecided if I should gusset my weld or brace it.

Engine cases  are Ts 250 that have also had the Oldfart treatment ( more on that latter )

Jimson,   Braced by tacking to bench along with a couple of stays each side with swing arm in.

I'm sure I created a thread way back  along with my ramblings on how this all started.

Below is the frame before I started , next is seat mount along with rear loop mod.
