Thought I might look at my 1984 SC490. When I parked it up it broke the flywheel key way. It has the Motoplat ignition but I want to know which is the right key groove to use as the flywheel has 2. Going clockwise is it the first or second. Some idea would useful otherwise I 'll have to check TDC and see if there is a fire mark.
Cheers. ???

don't know nutti'n about maico 'sept they have funny big fins and go like stink but i know the difference between a key and a key way.the key way is the slot that the key goes in. the key is the part that goes into the key way.consequently if you go into a parts person and ask for a new key way he may refer you to the hard ware shop where they may stock them next to post holes....cheers wally.[i dont know how to make smiley face]. ps...i always lap the flywheel to the shaft and make a key from aluminium so if it does shear no damage is done to the shaft surface or the taper in the flywheel.works for me and also works for briggs & stratton.

Thanks Wally. I have another question. Will an 81/82 490 or 250 Maico engine fit into a 1984 SC500. I have two 84's SC500's but one is a compltete rolling chassis. I'm going to take the motor out of my good SC because someone has done a bit of a bodge on the compliance plate so I will have a spare frame. It would be a shame to waste it so why not use it. I might build it up as a MXer rather than an enduro. ???
-
Don't think so.
If you want to off load the roling chassis p.m. me
-
stackers built a later model say 83 .84 . with a 81 490 engine for the thumper nats it was on ebay, last year diidnt sell,it i nsw some were
-
G'day Paul
You mention your mates Stackers a lot so I guess you have built up a bit of a relationship with them with your buying and selling of the odd Maico so it begs the question.
What exactly do they have in stock for we plebs out there ?
Over the years I have heard all sorts of different things about them. It seems there was a good opening for a decent bloke like Les to step up and be well known as an alternative supplier with a reliable reputation and he is now a premium supplier.
It would be interesting to get your honest opinion on their true extent of their stock, their prices for parts (and engine rebuilds which you get them to do for you) and turn over times for delivery of parts.
Also - how much information have they given you access to regarding bikes imported etc and can you post it so we can all share that info as it is useful information for the fanatics out there.
I'm sure all of us in Maico land look forward to your information.

dave i carnt really speak for them .all i know is if you need something give them a ring

-
Hi Paul,
Thanks for that.
I should give them a call and see what they have these days.
Do you have all of the number lists like the GS one you showed in another thread?
Cheers
Dave Mac
-

al sortsa stuff in it
-
G'day Paul
Thanks for that - can you get it to us ?
Dave Mac ;D
-
postage is very slow lol still waiting for the square barrell paperwork lol
so that a no at present
-
No worries ;D
-
Hey paul
I nearly didn't notice ??? your new promo for trying to buy bikes - I'll have to look into that one too - maybe everyone can get in on the act ;)
It pays to advertise, lol !!!
Dave Mac (who buys lots and lots of Maicos and parts for Maico's and wants to find some parts for a nice old Buly M49 trials iron!!!) :D
-
you are right there just got another offered in the last 30 min , just waiting for pics
but ive been doing this locally for ages and even though you have spent trillions oversea lol im happy with the ones ive got
-
So it works eh - cool I'll have to come up with a catchy slogan too !!!
If you've been doing it for ages you must have an absolute shit load of racers now - all good !
Trillions I got - but I'm easy with that. I am stimulating the world economy and all being well get more Maico's into the country to hopefully have guys race and enjoy as they were meant to be used. I have another shipment coming out with another following in two weeks, yahoo !!!
And a water blaster finally on it's way next week so the restos can be done in house.
Are you coming up to Canberra?
Now I have some good contacts I can buy more and more Maico's and and and ....................
Always smilin' ;D
Dave Mac ;)
-
so whats for sale lol
-
NOTHING lol! ;D
-
WELL HOW YOU GOING TO GET BUMS ON SEATS AS I THOUGHT CASHED UP MULTI CONGOLMERATE TRYING TO PUT THE AUSSIE BATTLER OUTA WORK
:P
-
A multi-national Maico conglomerate eh?
I'll talk to Kevin '07 and see what we can do to get the Chinese involved here. After all I have heard some rumblings of Wolfsport MC490 replica's rolling off the assembly line to head down under eventually - who would want the crappy old real thing. So roll on Globalisation - Chinalco has already called me to ask if they can melt down all the bikes !!!
The number of bikes this Aussie battler has accumulated at great cost to the management is a great hedge against the current shitty bank and market rates and what's an ex toolmaker who enjoys the challenge of doing his own work to do but (eventually, lol) get started rebuilding them. In the meantime there are two 440's and the 490 to have fun on with the GP getting an ignition transplant tomorrow for Canberra.
More coming so all is good - at least I'm happy which is all we can ask for in life eh?
Dave Mac :D
-
those wulf sport frames a very expensive ive heard some thing like 2000 pound
-
Maybe we should get a quote from them including shipping to see.
The way I see it is that no matter how good they are they are still not the rela thing and there are still heaps of real 490's out there if you know where to ask.
Sure they look swanky but shit - at what cost ???
-
Just thought of something - does anyone know of any in OZ ?
-
dave i bought some stuff from them and the first time postage was very reasonable ,then the second time they wanted a massive amount so to get one sent here would be very costly .
the forum member crabman has one in sth africa i seem to remember he could probably give you a run down on it
and i dont know any body here with one
-
Hey Dave when you gonna stop buying all the Maico stuff on US ebay so some of us can get some parts without paying thru the nose for it. How much stuff does 1 person need? :)
-
Hey Paul and Maico490 man you guys obviously know your Maico stuff and I enjoy reading the banter. Just wondering tho are you guys in the business of buying and selling Maico Motorcycles and parts at a profit. Nothing wrong with that I say. However I would be a little concern'd if you guys where perhaps using the forums on this site to generate interest and income in the guise of what the masses think is a hobby like it is for the majority of the hoi poli an this site
I would hazard a guess that the business's that have a defineable ad on the home page of this site have paid for the privelege.
It's just better and fairer I reckon if everybody knows where everybody is coming from.
As always I stand to be corrected.

As it is for most on this site I would say Paul. But you did'nt quite answer the question.
-
IF I FIND SOMETHING CHEAP ON EBAY I WILL LIKE MOST PEPLE SELL IT AT A PROFIT
AS THE FORUM GOES
I HELPED JIGANTOR GET HIS CZ 400
GOT BRAD SIDE PIPE CZ A 380 AND A 250
GOT MAICO STU A 75 MAICO 440
GOT BRAD A AW 400 this one cost him
GOT JIM A CZ 250
AND TRADE OTHER BITS TO OTHER PEOPLE JUST TO MENTION A FEW
ALL FOR NO PROFIT
SO I THINK THAT IVE HELPED THE PEOPLE HERE WERE EVER I CAN
BUT I COLLECT MAICOS TOO SO IF SOME ONE HAS SOMETHING IM INTERESTED IN ,SURE I WILL BUY IT FOR MY SELF SO IN THAT REGAURD THE FORUM IS A TOOL I USE TO HELP FIND THING ,IT IS NO GOOD PUTTING A MAICO WANTED ADD IN THE WOMANS WEEKLY ;)
-
OK gents!
I'm with Paul on this and yeah I buy Maicos - pure and simple. I also happen to love em and I guess now that I can afford to buy them and begin restoring them, sure, I'll make some money out of it but hey what the hell is wrong with that?
The way I figure it is simple. The guys that are capable of restoring a bike to some sort of state, be it race ready or as a lounge room queen are more than able. There are however a large number of fellows out there who are not able or simply don't have the time to build a decent bike and so if I rebuild a bike and sell it surely my time is worth something is it not? I don't come at building bikes from a background of being a chartered accountant or a plumber who simply feels out of their depth - I revel in playing with bikes be it a simple two stroke or a Ducati bevel engine (or an MV750S for that matter).
My background is toolmaking and general bench fitting of precision tooling and I have a very well equipped workshop that has cost a stack of money over the years - all of which has to be recouped in some way so why not enjoy myself and work on what I love doing? Past experience has shown me you sell for what the market is prepared to pay - I am not a charity nor would I make a lot anyway - what is YOUR time worth.
As to using this forum as some veiled way of promoting myself take the time to read my posts or ask some of the people I have helped via P.M. rather than 'promoting' myself on the forum. It seems that when you openly share what you have learned you often cop a heap of flack so why bother putting it all out there - I'd rather pass on help privately now.
For JohnnyO - feel free to buy on US ebay or any other open market. My dollar is the same as yours and if you take the trouble to get to know some of the guys Stateside you can get a lot of stuff that never gets put on ebay. There are thousands of bikes out there and there are always things I am not remotely interested in buying so it's open slather.
Regarding Paul - have you guys ever noticed some of the sweet deals he has found and then put up on this forum so anyone can have a go. Fair dinkum what have I done wrong? Least I don't read the Womans Weekly, lol !!! :o
BTW - I don't just buy Maico's. I have just bought a couple of nice Buly's from two cool guys, afew Ducati 450 R/T's and some other stuff. All were bought for good money and all of which anyone here can access via ebay.
I don't even see why I have to justify myself?
Cheers and good night
Dave Mac ;)
-
AND AFTER I CHECKED MY MESSAGES THE SAME PERSON ASK ME FOR A 74,1/2/ FRAME TALK ABOUT SHOOT THE MESSENGER ::)
-
Col and JohnnyO.
Come and say hi at Canberra.
I'll be there on a 440GP and hopefully will have the '81 440 there too !
Cheers
Dave Mac :D
-
Ok Ok I stand corrected, sort of. Paul that you did and no doubt will continue to do all those favours for all those people is a good thing.
That you felt you had tell me in caps is the part your response I dont quite understand.
I to have used capitols on this forum in the past to make a point and when have read back through them at a later date...................
Re the making a profit from bikes and bits sold via this forum or any where else that you may pay for the privelege I have no problems with which I think I might have mentioned in my original post.
For those not sure yes it was me Paul was refering to when he alluded to the guy whom made enquireys to him re the 74.5 Maico frame.
Dave your right, you dont have to justify yourself to anyone least of all me. Yes I asked the question but I would'nt have thought any more or less of either of you if you did not respond. I ask lots of questions of lots of people everyday. Some get answer'd some dont.
No big deal I say, just move on.
Paul, I am getting the impression that I may have offended you and if that is the case I have no problem with apologising for any grief that I have caused you.
Dave, I wont be at Canberra but would love to see some pics of the 440 GP. What year are we talking.
-
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BUY CAPS IM A TREE LOPPER NOT A ENGLISH TEACHER IWERE READING GLASSES AND CAPITOL LETTERS ARE EASY FOR ME TO READ
-
Funny thing is Paul I text in caps for exactly the same reason (blind not tree loper) and hope that receipiants will get the message and text back the same way.
-
Hey Col - all cool mate.
The 440 is an early 74 1/2 and hopefully will be going well enough to get it to the national capital (you know - the place where all those useless prick politicians hang out when they aren't selling what is left of our country to China!)
Tonight is PVL night so all being well tomorrow is an easy start bike day! It depends on the PVL as I got it cheap.
It will be dead easy to get pics of the bike (with me on it) as it won't be going all that fast, lol ! but hey I am 51 (oh SHIT, am I THAT old?) I remember the 440's when they were new and belting around Dargle and Amaroo !!! - Still they were no match for my CR125 ???
Sorry Col - no caps. You and Paul need to get your glasses checked !!!
Dave Mac :D

Mick, I am guessing that it took you as long as it would me to write your last post (tirade) and thats a very long time. I am in awe.
Other than to say my wife agree's with every thing you have said about me and she's never wrong I cant say much else. If you could see me now I am a beaten shell of a man.
Before I go down the back yard and rid the world of this piss poor weak of an excuse for a human being Mick am happy to match your twenty dollar donation to this site. What he does with it is his business. Those spell checker things, just what year model are they.

I just want to add here that forum members-especially Paul and Brad-who bid on my old 77 AW helped me. How? Well it sold locally-but the added interest drove up the price to IMO a good level. In fact, I only lost 3500-4200 or so on it. BTW good thing I sold it in Sept of 07, as today it would be tough to get over about 3k US for any AW regardless of condition.
Also, Glenn sent some very nice shirts to us here. All for only passing along a poster shipment froma US seller who would not ship out of country. IMO Oz VMXers are a great group. I too have seen that Paul and Dave have purchased many Maico parts, agian IMO they need not apoligize for that. Also, right now parts and bikes are being offered which rarely see e-bay( if ever for sale at all), like 501s, MC125s, and even TP Czeds. If you have a few $, you can buy pretty well right now. I frequent US e-bay, both buying and selling. I watch the mc parts for "Maico" almost daily-there are some who ask( and at times get) ridiculous prices for common parts. Knowing this, it's easy to see that Paul and Dave are not among the "opportunists".
Cheers, MJ
