Title: CR250RE resto
Post by: Boyracer on September 26, 2007, 07:30:54 pm
I bought this heap of sh#t a couple of years ago off ebay from the central coast to clean up and get going properly. The water pump was shot and the bore was worn.I got carried away a bit and kept going.
The top end has been freshened and waterpump area welded up and the front wheel pulled apart and the spokes re-chromed,the back wheel was taped up and repainted in septone chrome paint.
The frame was also re-sprayed in two pac.
Not too far to go,I hope I have the beast going very soon, hope youse like it,cheers Boyracer.

Yep the front hub was bead blasted while it was apart and most nuts were wire brushed, washed in degreaser then soaked in truck wash from a spray bottle then painted in silver paint.I put new bearings in the wheels today so the rims will be bolted up this weekend. :)

just a question bud
who has led you to believe this is an re bike
dont get me wrong her i might be totaly wrong but the frame an top engine mounts look like 81 82 even the air box
i know from 83 onwards they ahd detacable rear halves on the frames an disk brake front on em

it may be a bitsa with an 84 motor in it

disc brake was 84 , the rear sub frame looks as if it unbolts either way you'll have a excellent pre 85 bike

Looks like you are completely wrong mate! If you look closely the subframe is there, it is the correct swingarm (by stickers) and it has a front disc brake as per photo of wheels ala cr250 RE. Cheers.

I know that the sub frame is there if you look at the junction near the top shock mount there seems to be a bolt on the other side so I thought that it would unbolt. boyracer does it unbolt ?
doesnt matter any how its mostly an RE, if you build a bike that works and looks great you'll have fun  no matter what bits are on it

Faaark! the sump thread was stuffed and brainy me thought I would put a helicoil in it, der, the sump tunnel split down the side and and now its gotta get welded.
I gotta get the engine back out, can I leave the swingarm in the frame please somebody?

most honda's have the swingarm pivot through the engine (i'm sure RE is same) put bike on a stand under the frame (or a milk crate) take rear wheel out and remove motor being careful, the swingarm should stay in place. an extra precaution of taking a shock bolt out will also help.

I got it out by taking out the swingarm pivot bolt and top shock bolt and a linkage bolt and pulled swingarm backwards half an inch, thanks dude.

the re 250 swingarm dose not run throught the motor ir runs through an alloy bracket that is held on to the engine mounts so you can remove the engine with out taking the swingarm off

I knew that, but if I did it like that the whole swing arm would have to come out, the way I did it, I left the bracket sitting and the motor lifted.
All fixed now, the donk will be back in soon and the beast will run soon. ;)

Ive nearly got this thing nailed, I even had it running but oil was dripping out of a hairline crack on the front of the clutch cover and it had to be welded, now the f#ckin thing wont bolt back up without snagging the kick start spring, does anyone know how to keep the spring out of the way so I can bolt her up please? ??? New spring?

Try fitting up the clutch cover enough to then put the kickstarter on. Then push the kickstarter down which winds the spring up and makes it smaller

It wasnt that but thanks, ther sleeve on the kick shaft needed to be out a bit more to space the spring near the hole, I will get some pics up this week, cheers all.

Not too much left to do, the clutch cable looks as if it has to go a different way etc and the brake master cylinder window is cracked so I have to find the right glue for the inside or replace it.

I thought I would let youse know how it ended up, I got a master cylinder off a 125 cheaper from the USA, the motor was rebuilt by me after it was bored to the last OS, it has had a bigger main jet, fork and shock service, new seat cover, front wheel rebuilt after spokes recromed, custom rear linkage bushes made up and hardened and the barrel looks like it has been ported to death by a previous owner, so far it goes good.
