Title: Is this bike worth $770?
Post by: Colin Jay on March 13, 2009, 01:59:23 pm
I went to a clearing sale at Boolooroo, 70km north of Clare SA, this morning to have a look at this 1973 SL70, and hopfully buy it. From a starting bit of $100, the buying price rapidly escalated to a price of $700 + GST. I was willing to pay $400, and my final bid was $500 (got carried away, like always) and the other two guys kept going. The winning bit was a proxy bit with one of the stock agents, so the winning bidder has not seen the bike in the flesh.

As can be seen in the pictures, the bike has 7528 miles on the speedo and is very original and almost complete. Problems and damage I noted apart from all the dirt and general wear and tear, were as follows;

There was no kickstart fitted, and when I put the bike in gear (the gear lever turns on the selector shaft) the engine turn over for about a turn before stopping (posibly bent a valve as you could here the camchain rattling as it turned over). Badly cracked rear mudguard. Missing spokes in the front wheel. Chain and sprokets fairly worn, tyres flat, hard and perished. The seat cover has several small tears in it. All the chrome, including the fork tubes have lots of minor rust pitting.

Now am I just tight, or is this really worth what the guy has payed for it?

Edit: The early 60's C92 125 Benly in the background sold for $500 + GST. It actually still had the original took roll / kit under the sidecover in mint condition, so maybe the SL still has its toolkit too. I din't remove the sidecivers for fear of snapping the lugs off.

Hmmmmmm. Very original 8). Give it a tubs and we would have a better idea but I would say yes ;). These early Honda mini (mid) bikes attract 'good money' - speculated to have something to do with mid life crisis baby boomers reconnecting with their youth ::) :P.

i vote not worth more than $300, and thats only if you had a burning use for it.

looking  at the picture it seemed a long way to go for very little lots ?

Yep sure is   ;D  and its worth every last cents of fuel to go and collect it.
I can just picture it looking as shiny and on show like that this one some day  http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=6612.0
Items always fluctuate at clearance sales, you can never tell what is going to sell for what price  :o
One Combine will sell for 500 the next- the exact same standing right beside it will sell for 5000. ::)

hey I just watched an unrestored '75 TS75M sell for $2000US so it really is dependant on who wants it and like the SL70 they wearn't sold as AG bikes ;) I'd say $700 is top dollar for the condition shown but where do you find another as complete and original for less?

Yes ,even if you don't have "a burning use for it..." for a complete unit like that with sought after parts. Plastic sidecovers alone would ebay for $150 US plus each , Exhaust with the chrome shields $200 plus plus etc etc. I have collected SL70 parts for some time and I am not joking to say with a pressure wash and some cheapo polish $1000 starting price ,then watch your $ grow. Frosty the C92 125cc twin Benly are a great bike to do up, as most of the parts can be be bought from Asia NOS. Some parts were/are still in production to this day..  Cheers

this is just my opinion going by a C95 benley i had to work on. The onwer bought is as a bike for his wife and was told it had been rebuilt etc, etc. was  load of rubbish and he got ripped off. we found many things wrong with it and needed heaps of work which the onwner didnt really want to have to do. his idea was a bit of TLC a couple new parts and away we go. no way. basically everything time we did anyhting we found more and more stuff wrong, missing not working etc. engine had no gears and had been assembled wrong so i had to rebuild that. some of the engine oil seals and bits are very hard to get though. got it back together, and found out the gearing was all wrong. it had a top speed of less than 60kms. the front end was rooted and the list went on. in the end the onwer had got sick of it and said he doesnt want to spend anymore on it. Really it needed a full nut and bolt resto or inspection/rebuild/clean/repair of every single part which was just $ he didnt have and in the end i think they are still nothing that flash. Th build quality of this C95 just didnt seem that good to me compared to the 1970's bikes. The electrics on these early period Hondas are not that crash hot either.

My Vote is YES,
I would rather be poked in the eye with a blunt stick than ride a Honda   ::)  But my vote is still YES.

I have only ever seen 1 SL70 like this one and it was in 1972, I am sure Honda sold lots of them, but this bike was and is one to have.
Just my humble opinion,
Team Zundapp
Terry

It will be interesting to watch. It's a pile of shite compared to the farm bike and already $250 with 5 days to go.
