Title: Stick on clear plastic protection for tank
Post by: MX? on March 12, 2009, 03:21:35 pm
Anyone use that clear stick on sheet stuff for their tank? Just wondering if it's any good or whether it ends up looking just as tatty as scratched paintwork (or worse). I'd imagine that once it's on there that you can't take it off without damage to paint or graphics?

i just use the clear contact from Bunnings - nothing industrial just the normal household stuff.  Looks after my tank for a while, is easy to get off without damaging the paint on the tank and easy and cheap to replace.

cheers

If you can find a vinyl graphics shop, they'll sell ya a metre or two of special auto exterior protective clear adhesive vinyl.  Costs a bit (around $50 per metre) but last heaps, and great for putting on clutch case/ignition cover for scuff protection.  Just make sure you heat it for a moment or two with hair dryer just before applying, for good grip.

thanks for the replies. I hadn't thought about the graphics shop....doh! and I'd only just left there after picking up a few numbers..(racing numbers :-[) might be able to get 'em to snip off a couple of small bits?

if you have a good 2 pack top coat then there is no worry about the clear sheet peeling off the paint.

Ballards sell clear stuff - thick heavy duty.  $20 for two sheets.  I've used it on my alloy Husky tank and it seems to wear well.

Go to a signwriting supplier and you can get it for about $7-12 per metre depending on how many years you want it to last in the sun.  Or you can also get the thick body guard for about $20 per metre.  You don't have to be a signwriter to buy it.  Wont take paint off but you may need a adhesive remover to get the tack off.
