For you guys with a hankering for a 490 and medium sized pockets here is a great option and it looks in good shape too.
Anyone know this bike Ebay AU # 170309087728
A good vinduro mount no doubt and for most of us mere mortals a very capable open class MXer

He would have registered it with the 250 VIN which is of course the frame number and who knows he could easily have used a 250 set of cases as they are identical to the ones used in the 490 engine save for the engine number stamping
Either way it is still a 490 so it's one cheaply registered trail weapon

Nothing wrong with pretending - I do that all the time when I ride LOL !
In the case of price - the ebay 'market' can set the real interest and then, as in The Life of Brian "you gotto 'agle" re purchase price

Thought about contacting him to see if he wanted to swap or do a deal for my Ducati Darmah but I think it is well overpriced. ???
-
Hey MM - Does the Darmah run?
-
Yeh m490t the Darmah runs. Just have to put the rear caliper and chain back on. Engine and gearbox has had a full rebuild. It is in very nice condition. There is a picture of it on this forum somewhere. I still have to test the gearbox and it's not run in yet. Not sure if I really want to part with it as they are very sought after now. But if something good came up I may say yes. I would like a 81 or 82 Maico 490.
-
What do forum members think a fair price would be for this GS490. I read in the ad that it has original engine and frame numbers. It seems to be a good example .
-
Hey 'chips.
Tell us what you think
1) A mint '81 MC490T would fetch (as opposed to what is worth, either way depending on opinions etc)
2) A rough but rideable '81 MC490T would cost
3) A Ducati SD900 would get (assuming it is not in concourse condition)
Look forward to hearing you ideas,
Dave Mac ;)

Chips - I'll PM ya
;)
-
more than the answer to q2
-
jim what do you mean :o
-
What do reckon a rough but rideable MC490T would be worth Jim?
Someone who may or may not wish to remain nameless knocked back $13500 for a VERY nice one I believe?
Other people opinions are always welcome here ;) !!!
Cheers mate,
Dave Mac

the darmaha sd900 is worth more than 8000.00 so more than f&c answer to q 2

and theres a good story that goes with this but im sworn to secrecy ::)
-
OK - Now I've gotcha Jim
Q2 was the value of a rough rider Maico 490
Question Three was about the Dukes, so yeah as to the Darmah - value from around $4000 to $1800 depends on whether it's in good nick, an SD versus an SSD and heaps of other variables including the depth of a potential buyers pocket. One VERY important consideration when buying old bevel twins is engine condition. A stuffed engine, when I used to do a lot of work on them not that many years ago, could easily run to $6000.
As for the others you mentioned I agree, and many of the figures you stated could be higher, and NO my 74 750SS is NOT and NEVER will be for sale :)
Check the road bike posts for what I have but bear in mind I bought them all when they were MUCH cheaper !!!
And Mr Paul - I didn't want to name you unless you wanted to be named mate - only doing the right thing by ya there mate. When are you going to tease the masses again by offering it for sale ? It could be a good barometer on the current economic situation ?
That 490 is one thing of beauty - can you send me the image of that - I want it as a screen saver !!!!!!!!!!!! Come to think of it EVERYONE should have a copy, lol !
Cheers

nah its staying now , maico stu has threatened to shoot me if i do it again .
-
Fun while it lasted though :D

Thanks guys for your thoughts. I think I'm just Maico greedy. Had a chance to buy a 1979 circa GS250 at the old Bargo swap meet in 1993 for $300. I turned it down and bought a car instead for the same price. Kicking myself now. Wouldn't mind a 250 either. I was driving home from Picton one day and some guys had a 1981 MC490 for sale out the front. Stopped in to have a look and the F@#cken thing had about 3ft of rear suspension travel. It sat up really high.
The guys said it was a beast to ride and were obviously a little scared of it. They wanted $1100 for it. I tried to raise the funds but when I went back it was gone. Roughly a year later I bought my 84 SC490 for $1100 fancy that. She has been with me ever since. :)
