???
Hi I just purchased this bike of the neighbour for a $100 he stated it was a kdx 200 but i noticed that on the barrel it is dated 1980 i thought the kdx200 started in 1983 if it is a 1980 kdx200 would anyone have a pick of one or direct me to a site which does.
the reason he sold it was that it is missing the stator and flywheel any thoughts where i could get one or one that might fit from another model
I will attach pic tomorrow sorry
Thanks
dave

Can you get the stator repaired as i have found it in the bucket of bits that came with the bolts??
-
Dave,
I think the '83 was just the last of the air cooled models, there were 200's before that and 175's before that. There's a KDX forum on Yahoo and I think there's a site called ........just KDX
Roger
-
88 was the last of the air cooled
86 to 88 were virtually identical & had power valve & front disc
I think their were 3 years of 200 before that 83-85
& 2 years of 175 81-82

Having trouble uploading Pic???
There is no Pic of a bike for the 1980 in the bikepics site what a shame
-
The 1980 cast into the barrel ISN"T 1980 it's "198CC", look closer at the pics of KDX200's untill you find a match
-
Please don't beat me but it does say on barrel 1980 and if i can get a pic up on this site i will show you.
-
And next pic

there were no KDX 200's in 1980. they came out in 84 ( according to site above). if yours says 1980 someone proabably just engraved it in there or its a 1980 175 engine
-
Code on the Barrel
KHI DX200AE00 5865
MMMMM Thats what i thought but the Date is Cast on the Barrel not engraved
-
ok maybe the barrels for the 200 are the same as the 175 and they used bored out 175 barrels cast in 1980?
-
That's not a date on the barrel, never known any manufacturer to cast in dates. Exception being with the clock style date casting, usually on plastics
Cyclegod was right, look closer its says 198L meaning 0.198 litre.
Looks like an 84 model by the sidecovers
Not sure, did they make a 175 in 80, I thought 81 was the first KDX?
Will make a good Vinduro ride when you have it sorted.
-
Please don't beat me but it does say on barrel 1980 and if i can get a pic up on this site i will show you.
Definately pre85 KDX200 and a damn fine score for $100, no such thing as a 1980 KDX200 first production year was 1983 same as Yamaha IT200. May I suggest that you write down your engine and chassis numbers and take them to your nearest Kawasaki dealer to verify the year and model.

This will tidy it up too...

Pretty sure it says 1980 but will have another look and take a better pic and upload it, i have the Stator although it needs Fixing but missing the flywheel any thoughts where i might get one of these
-
In order, local wreckers then, interstate wreckers then, ozvmx wanted section then, eBay.
-
Yup i was wrong it has on the Barrel 198And a funnylooking symbol like a fish symbol facing downward. :-\
-
It's a cursive "L"
-
so as in liter? so there might be a decimal in front of it so its .198l (.198 liter motor)
also try your local Kawasakki dealer for the flywheel, it might still be available new. i wouldnt waste my money on a used flywheel from a wreckers if you dont know how its been stored (loose, with keepers or on an engine) as it could have weak magnets.
-
Not available from kawasaki anymore!
thanks much appreciate the info
-
Check the part numbers at Kawasaki to see if the KDX175 used the same rotor

The fact that you haven't mentioned a compliance plate, means that its probably a 1983 model (KDX200A).
The B1 came out in 1984, and was fitted with a compliance plate. Same basic bike as the A, but with all of the ADR crap fitted, and a few mechanical revisions (different barrell/piston to stop the seizure problems, being the most significant).
The 85 model B2 is virtually identical to the B1, but has a blue seat cover (and IIRC, a blue shock spring).
Good bikes. I'm hanging to get my B1 finished.... I guess that starting on it would be a big step in the right direction... :-[
Oh, and FWIW, I'm pretty sure that I read that Kawasaki Australia was selling KDX175s in 1983 - the 200 was a much better bike, but its lack of compliance plate meant that the 175 was kept on sale.
-
thats some good info Nathan.
try sanding the paint on the head stem a bit as the number must be filled in with paint if you cant see it. there might not be a compliance plate but there has to be a frame number somewhere.
-
Well after talking to mates at church we have solved it i know have 2 good statos and 2 great flywheels, a spare tank, a rear fender, electrical harness and bottom end of a motor what a score, now to finish the beast would you know if i can get a chain guide aftermarket or would this have to be genuine.
Dave
-
KDX spare flywheels? rare as rocking horse poo :D
don't drop them or hit with hammer when removing because the glue that retains the magnets will let go.
I think that rust can creep in also and loosen the magnets so give them a spray with inox or similar.
