Transferred topic from Bike talk
Is this possible ? Anyone done it ?? How would it be done ??
There would be heaps of interest ans lots of very thankful people if you could work out how to do it. All the old insulation is starting to die. I think I am a victim of this myself.
-
NAthan is going to be doing it soon along with the rims. Watch this space. i have been told by an insider he is currently ( parden the pun) doing a course as we speak.
-
:D
No, hadn't even thought about it... But from talking to some of the more knowledgable sparkys at work, apparently it isn't that hard.
Speaking with all the experience of somebody who has never done it, it can't be difficult. :D

Thought about this some time ago as well ....thickness of wire by number of windings ???? is that right
-
yeah if you dont know what your doing you can get it wrong. its all about thickness of wire and number of windings. therefore if you unwound the old coils and then measured the thickness of the wire you should be right. also you could try measuring the total length of the wire. have a search on the internet and you will find info on it. try searching for winding lighting coils or something like that and you will find info. otherwise leave it to the experts eg http://www.bettabikes.com/ or at least ask Steve and he may give you a few pointers on how to DIY
-
Sorry to rain on the party but you would have to know how many turns there are on the original coil and the output voltage. As the amount of windings has a big bearing on the voltage the stator pumps out.To much and you will frazzle the cdi very quickly not enough and you will bet a firing maybe 1 in every 3.In the end why bother as you can have a complete stator/rotor for <$100 these days

i think Betta bikes charge about $70 to wind a single light coil but that was a few yrs ago. i would imagine a ignition coil would be the similar. also you can buy replacemet coils for most 80's onwards bikes from Electrex
-
If you wanted to do it you would have to make a coil winder. I use electromagnetic coils in my work and I have tried to rewind them by hand. Forget it.

I tried too, if it was only 30 turns or something ridiculously small like that it would be feasible but really it's job best left to the experts.

The Small Coil guy in VIC recently quoted me $180.00 RRP for a MX 250a charge coil rewind. I am still umming and arring.
Does anyone know what bettabikes charges?
-
Likely to be about the same. They just quoted me $145 to do the ignition coil on an 86 XR80. Don't know whether you can do anything with this, but you might be interested in it. http://home.comcast.net/~pgailunas/stator.html

that sounds too much to me about 2 yrs ago betta bikes charged me about $70 for just a basic single coil rewind. give them a call and ask. it shouldnt be $180 to just rewinding one coil.
-
That $70 quote from Bettabikes certainly was from a few years ago. They quoted me $250+ for a Motoplat rewind last year.
-
im talking about 1 single light/charge type coil about 45mm long. maybe the prices went up a lot?
-
FYI - recent quote from Bettabikes on MX250a rewind.
The MX 250A had 2 charge coils on the stator. A low speed & a high speed. They are $145.00 each to rewind or $260.00 for the pair. We keep them on the shelf for exchange. We can test your stator on a simple test at no charge. To test the complete ignition system (flywheel, stator CDI unit & coil) is $90.00 <[email protected]>

I had a motoplat mini 6 tested by Betta Bikes recently for $90. They then replaced the trigger coil in it fnd charged an extra $165. Cheaper than a new PVL ignition but you still have an old unit that has no guarrantee of lasting beyond tomorrow.....a bit like us VMX riders really!
-
you can do it yourself... i done it 2 my kids cr80 it was an older bike say mid 80,s with the pencil type....my mates a leco so got some wire of him a bit thicker than the original..and kept cutting it 2 length till i got close 2 the reading the manual gives..wind it back on solder it and bobs your uncle $10 special and its lasted 5 years
-
Good on you k2000. Sounds liek a bit of mucking about, but obbviosly it can be done.
-
Doesn't sound any harder than when we used to rewind slot car motors when we were primary school kids.
-
that is true there an extreamly basic system
-
here is a bit of info. its on a modern bike but the principles and methods can be used on older bikes
