I was riding expert in WA, lot of sand, so WR has decent midrange but fluffy bottom and and no over rev, so in sand whoops you top out and end up having to shift and juggle gears. Someone who is much better than me would probably not find it such a problem. likewise if you just bush bash or drag the fire roads it is also probably not a problem. 250 is much better bike.

Mine is not an isolated opinion.

like I said if you are bush bashing or not trying to be fast then no problem, but KX500, KTM520 and CR500 are all much better off road if you are racing, I have ridden enduro  loops on all of them. Best way to see the difference is get a ride on one of the other bikes especially a CR500, then you will see what I mean.

If my info is correct the WR is a rebadging of the 490, which later models had port timing more suited to road racing. The directive must have been for a big dyno number.

i do agree , at the time i think there were far more competitive bikes , (all of them !)   i use mine for fun , lozza there is a bit more than rebadgeing ,  the frame is an altered yz250, i think rake angle is different ,with different linkages , same bottom end and tranny , different (detuned) cylinder and head  , i ,ve fitted a yz 490 cylinder to mine and with the wr head which is de compressed and de pinged works a treat , stops those pesky 250,s passing u all the time , carb and manifold is reduced from the 490 , going back to 38mm ,takes a little top end , gives better control in tight stuff

Nothing wrong with the chassis as you are getting the 250 package, the WR was the last version of the old air hammer from the early 80s and was starting to show its age. Lower compression, different pipes and all the tricks the YZ490 owners had been messing with for years. Mine had added boost ports etc etc, worked OK but as serious race bike forget it.

I ran WR250 with flywheel weight after the 500 and it was really good.

http://www.rustytiller.com/pdf/offsite/moosewr.pdf

found this on the Vinduro forum and felt like sharing it. I think the WR250 would run hard even now. The WR200 was just a DT with flash suspension and it showed.
