You just have to always remember to use the decompresser when starting those big Maicos , or this could happen  ;D :

It does look a lot like a factory honda rusty, not many of them around. Has anyone here ever ridden one?

i had an 86 gme 500 , in about 92 for a few years , even 8 years old and ragged around the edges ,was fast , reliable and the only way to ride it was on the power , it was very heavy and very long , and i still miss it ,i sold it to someone in brisbane ,about 11 years ago , due to partner pressure , the rad shrouds were in sheet alum.and one radiator i had made was copper as i couldn,t afford the $2500 for a new one , then parts for it were hard to get and expensive , about $900  for a piston kit

Speaking of them looking like a Honda. I was reading an old ADB lastnight where they had a shootout with a 85 KTM Husky & Maico 250 MX. They bent the Maico, but aparently Maico even admited they liked the look of the RC Honda fuel tank so they coppied it. Probly a load of s**t but who knows.

IMS6201
The 500 gme you sold, did it have a Honda front end on it?
If it did, I ended up with it.

This is what it ended up looking like.
Raced it for a few years in Brisbane.
Sold it on to someone in Victoria.
Haven't heard any more about it.

it still has the honda forks i fitted ? i had it road rego.d at one time , it had a bad habit of sucking the throttle valve against the body and sticking if held fully open for too long , i,ve still got a center case gasket here i bought for it and never used , and i often kick my toe on the old kick starter lying on the shed floor , u probably got a few dollars more for it than the $1500 i sold it for , nice bike , thanks for postiong a photo of my old ride

Hi Evo 550
Yes, I used to have an '84 and it was a '99 set up for motard.
Ims6201
I removed the XR forks and fitted a '84 CR 250 front end to it.
Made a new pipe, had the engine reconditioned, powdercoated the frame, new plastics and had a great time racing it for about 5 years.
Every where I went, people would take pictures and ask "what is it?".
Sorry I sold it on to finance other projects.
I enjoyed reconditioning it.   I reckon it was faster than the newer '99 model.

I bought the '84 from you a few years ago now, It's all grown up now, you wouldn't recognise it.

The bike looks great. How is the pipe holding up? Wasn't sure how it would hold up when I made it. Hope all the welds have stayed together.
Are you still riding/racing it? Hope to get along to some QVMX rides and catch up with you when my knee gets stronger. Had an op last week.
Still have a '81 490. Wish it had an electric start.
Catch up with you sometime soon.
