just picked up a TS 185, I have been told they are a good bike, will these engine fit into a tm or rm frame. with out any hassels.

what age engine is it? the center ex port reed motors wont fit RM frame unless you do some serious mods to the single down tube. nothing impossible though

I have one of the old side port TS185 motors in RM S frame. The power and the handling are superb.

Quick hack of the rear engine mount and new front motor mount plates.

I have had a good look at the engine, the frame is a TS 185, but l feel that the engine is a tm, where do you look for the engine number, the clutch cover and arm is open and the arm is in front of the round section on the cover. can any body help.

The '76 model had similar engine side covers to TM's, the engine number is on the left hand side, it should have 4 short studs holding down the cylinder (if it has 6 then its the "ER" type). The lower right engine mount is the only one that needs changing to fit a 185 motor to a TM/RM-M/S frame. See my post...

no it wasn`t, l picked it up locally, on the barrel it is stamped 185, but will need to remove paint to fined the engine number.

looking at those photo`s, the ignition cover is the same as yours.

The early..Pre 75 models were silver barrells and the size was cast into the barrel 183 clutch arm in front of the counter sprocket

76 onward were black engines clutch arm on the right hand side as per RM style

this one of mine is a 1976 model, no engine numbers, it has a real deep froat sound, excellent compression, l think l will move it on, an RM frame with this engine you could make a nice bike.

the ER is 79 (australia UK) onwards. 79 US models were still the 77/78 model engine. 76 is black motor, with 6 stud head and 4 stud barrel but is not reed valve ( well thats what alpaha-sports show)

77 is first of the reed valve motors and this motor was the same for 78 and 79 in USA and used a smaller carb and barrel porting. The 79 model in australia/UK was the first of the ER motors but the barrel is different to the 77/78 model. The inlet port is bigger and the carb is bigger. I think this is the only major difference. In USA they didnt upgrade to the 79 ER type motor with different barrel and 29mm carby until 1980 and they kept the 78 style bikes for 79.

i feel i got that pretty right, feel free to correct me if you think i might be wrong.
