Title: 1974 YZ125A Vs 1974MX125A
Post by: melx on February 07, 2009, 12:25:57 am
I came across an old 74 Dirt Bike test article that lined up the Yamaha YZ125A against the Yamaha MX125A, I would have thought the YZ was way ahead but as I have never ridden one I had no true opinion, I rode the MX125 when it came out in 74 and as a teenager it was a lot of fun and I don't remember doing any actual maintenance on it except chain tightening/lubing and adding more fuel... Curious if anyone agrees with the test results, I posted the test here for those interested. http://vintagemx.com.au/?p=499 (http://vintagemx.com.au/?p=499)

Nice find - thanks.

I'd agree with virtually all of that.
The good thing is that in 2009, all of the major faults are easily fixed:
250 forks, decent shocks, go ride.

My DT125 is a significantly faster motocross bike than my YZ is.

Of course, in 2009, the Elsinores have their jetting sorted and have a 6-speed box, which keeps them that step ahead - but the Yammies are nowhere near as grim as they were back in the day.

Interesting read, can someone advise what sprocket sizes i should run as my 125a seems really low geard compared to other 125's ive ridden from 75 and 78yz. As i am considering a rece at nepean soon.

MX or YZ125A, OYM?

My DT racer has DT primary drive with a YZ-A gearbox and 16/48 gearing - and it quickly runs out of revs in top. The big tabletop at Clarence is hit flat out in fifth, with everyone else roaring by....

That reminds me - I owe Vandy a PM on this topic.

My little MX125a runs 13/51 gearing with std MX g/box. it'll just pull a 2nd gear start and runs out of steam on long straights {short straights are fine} but thats what i've found the best mix to be for me. wish the yammies had a six speed box.
my opinion is the YZ and MX 125 are the same bike. in this day 'n' age we all refine our bikes a little and i see the g/box ratio's as the only real difference between the two.
thats an interesting article though, good reading.
as for a favourite 125 to own & race? anything but a honda. sure they're the best. i won't argue that, but just gimme something else. would love a little Husky or one of them euro/italian thingies...

BEST 1974 125?

Has to be the 74 Kawasaki KX125, Why? Apart from the rotary valve, great handling bike it was, its because I just completed a restoration of one and it loooks great! Also to back up that factless 100% emotional opinion the 74 Cycle World 125 shootout of stock Jap bikes picked it as No 1. Its a good read and when I get time I will post the whole article.

In all honestly Melx have you ever ridden one? The little reed valve 32 ml carby all alloy all electronic engine coupled to the close ratio gearbox was worlds more efficient and easy to use than the Yamahas (Both) Hondas CR peaky flooding pest or Suzis docile TM , Unfortunately the handling and suspension were totally pathetic

A friend of mine has a pretty neat little MX125 for sale. It's a nice little bike that's pretty well unmolested except that it's fitted with a DT175 top end. The original top end and a bunch of spares go with it. Not sure how much he wants for it but I think it's around $1500. PM me if you're interested and I'll put you in touch with him.

I'm with Tim. Everyone dismisses the Hodaka until they actually ride one. They are a pretty good little bike, especially the Super Combat which could match most 125s IN '74.

Hodaka`s are a great bike, big culter following. Super combat wombat was a quick bike, just as quick as a honda cr.

Bazza hows ya ramjet  ;D
Have a look at the pic on page 2 on the below thread "on the wood"... ;D
Steven's able to say that woody word, but technically I can not,so I'll stick with gaga or clucky. ::)  ;D .
The reason behind it is ..that its dam easier riding a 125 (which the owner won't part with  ;) ) than hang'n off the side of a sidecar..got the love back.. :P  :P
