Well Im ready to give her another go this year, shes a 1977 KZ400,has a two into one, ported and polished, race cam, raised comp, twin pumper carbs,RM250b shocks, IT175 front end,3x inches added to cradle to lower the engine to get a better centre of gravity, last year she had about 4x outings each time teething problems arose.
It gets up a goes quite hard and has the best sound when in full flight.
Still its going to be a learning curve as now all I have to do is workout how to wrestle 138kgs of bike around a MX track ???

One question. Why?
-
Because ::)
-
good on ya mate ;D if those bloody Aprilia SVXs can give them a good go off road, then no reason not to apply that twin cylinder advantage to VMX. Hmmm i know where is an old YZ frame and RD 400 engine.
-
Fair enough

Somebody has already done the YZ/RD Hybrid thing . I don't know if it would be fun to ride , cause I wouldn't think the RD motor would have a lot of bottom-end power .
-
wow bet that really improved the value of the YZ ::)

Love it or hate it, that Yamaha is in Issue 37 of VMX. The bike was constructed in memory of a bike that Kelvin Franks built in the '70s, which was raced by, among others, Mike 'Too Tall' Bell.
......now, back to the Kawasaki!

Ken

Hell Ken..... really looking forward to issue 37 now, god bless the special builders particularly Kelvin Franks who I think never got the recognition that was coming to him, if only he had built a production run of fast XR500s.

speaking of twins bendigo short track champs 1970s.charlie edwards dirt track rider and 2t guenius made a air cooled tr 350 yamaha for nigel boocock(pommy speedway ledgend)to ride.they were pitted next to us. i was not riding but my older brother was.anyway to cut a long story short. he was last off every start and first at the finish.that bike put out so much power it shreded a brand new speedway tyer evey race i know this as i helped change evey one of them.

You want some more information about the real Twins?? :)
Please have a look on my website:

Sorry it's in German.
The KLX 508 is one of the three KLX 500 which R. Witthoeft has build in the 80ies.
In the moment there are only two of them ready to race. One is Witthoeft's bike and one is the bike of my dad.
We also had the original 750 Kawasaki from Witthoeft but we gave it back to him years ago. This is the red one here:

We made a mistake! :P
And here is the EX 305 Twin in a Husky frame:
