Hi every one, does any one no the background on the 1974 CZ 400 on Ebay. HL
-
thats a nice looking cee zee
price is ok good bulletproof pre75 beast ;D ;D
-
It does look good and it will be the nearest I can get to a YZ250a. I will put in a few bids and see how I go just waiting for a return Email about the frame and engine number. HL
-
is this bike a 73 or 74
-
http://www.czmadness.net/specs/cz400.html
looks 73 to me but ?
-
So hear the details.
Engine Number 981-2-000495
Frame Number 981-4-000495
do this mean the Frame is a 1974 and the motor is a 1973 ???
should they match O so mainy questions
HL
-
thanks but i got the numbers from the seller
this is what i was told
the frame is a 1973 black frame cz380 ie 400 981-4
the 1974 fram is red and has 981-5
the motor is 1973 radial
-
so it is a mis match. but its still looks ok and it is pre 1975 legal.
I think I will still put in a bid.

yep Paul your right it does look like a 1973 model.
should the motor have the same 4 digits at the start or is 981-2 mean it is the corect motor for the frame ? HL
-
im not sure ask jim he will probably be able to tell im not sure if frame and engine numbers were suppose to match in cz , but all i recond is the listing is wrong
-
1974 frame are RED.
there is almost no difference in motors from yellow tank 1972 to radial 1974.ok 1 is radial the other is straight fin.
-
well I have just put in a bid. so mabe 2009 will be my year to return to racing. HL
-
HL I dont think this is a mismatch, the last 3 digits on the frame and engine are the same which seems toomuch of a coincidence, although I think engine and frame numbers are meant to be exactly the same(mine are). Was talking to a mate the other day and he reckons they did lots of different sorts of combos depending on what was available to them at the time of assembly. This looks like an excellent bike and a pre75 weapon as holeshot says.
-
Thanks shorshift, well I have put in a bid if all goes well in will in the shed nexy week and then on the track for some much needed pratice its been 24 years or so sine I have raced HL
-
Well I am now a owner of a 1973 CZ400. won on Ebay last night, wow!! I will pick it up this week and after a look over I better put in some practic as the season is not far off. So the pre 75 class now has a new rider. Henry

Good work Henry, let us know what condition its in.
-
Sometimes it can be hard to work out the ID, like old holdens, parts swap easily.
I think up to 71 (maybe 70) the front down tube bends underneath the engine where the outer frame rails meet up with it.
After 71 the front down tube finishes shorter & is straight & the outer frame rails bend up on an angle to meet up with it.
Up to 73 the exhaust fitting on the barrel was a bolt on with flange.
74 exhaust was a slip mount with springs.
75 exhaust was a slip mount with springs & a very short hanger bracket for exhaust mount.
I have come a cross a few that have had barrels changed.
-
Thanks GMC I pick it up Tuesday night so will fill you all in on Wedneday night, so lets hope I can ride it on the weekend HL
