Title: paint stripper for plastic

I just bought some Bostik Enviro-Stripper to get paint of some airbox parts and sidecovers, and it worked a treat. No damage to the plastic whatsoever and the paint came off completely in about 15 mins.

I thought a specific brand that works might be helpful to know as this comes up from time to time.

Dettol works a treat too ;)

I take all my stuff to a commercial stripper, plastics, alloy & steel. Most plastics are not affected EXCEPT Elsinore side plates. They melt/dissolve very quickly. I have used most of the brands myself as well, and have found the same. Elsinore mudguards are not affected. I don't know if the brand Mainline uses will harm the side plates, but be very careful.

same with the early XL 350 sidecovers. dont use it on that plastic as it makes them go to jelly. paint stripper is fine to use on polyethylene though.

I suppose I should point out that the parts I'm working on are the airbox and sidecover from a 79 YZ. I don't know what these plastics are or how they compare to other brands and their plastic parts.

Trust me lads, a bit of dettol in water and let those plastics soak and the paint comes off quite nicely leaving the part untouched.
 My brother  does it for his miniature military models and has done for years

Is that Dettol antiseptic???

 Can I ask where you bought that (paint) stripper ?  I have looked around and not found anything like that, except in Fortitude Valley and those werent for paint. ::)

Ps tried the dettol which didnt work after 24 hours, probably not concentrated enough.

I picked it up at the "Paint Place" in Strathpine. I'm pretty sure most specialised paint shops would carry it, especially those that are more trade-orientated.

I don't think your average hardware store would be any good.

p.s. bear in mind what others have pointed out about the different plastic types, I'd hate for you to come looking for me at the next QVMX event with a soggy looking bit of plastic in one hand and a club in the other ;D

Anyone have more details of this dettol method? (I have a tank that needs disinfecting!)
