Title: CZ400 1973 rear shocks
Post by: Ji Gantor on January 28, 2009, 08:24:57 am
What is the eye to eye distance on the rear shock for a CZ400 1973?
What was the Diameter of the rear shock spring ( not the wire diameter )?
Was the travel of the rear shock 86mm?
Was the CZ400 1974 rear shock the same specs?

Thanks YSS,
Do you know what the eye to eye dimension is?
How much travel does your shock deliver?

The stroke is depending on the lenght shock you require or prefere  . Perhaps give us a call to discuss your options .

Hi YSS,
I did not want to buy a set of shocks just yet, just after the eye to eye distance.
The manual does not tell me the measurement and the bike has S & W shocks on it at present. I would like to know if the eye to eye length is correct for the bike.

Does anybody know?

Koni listed a 13" shock for all CZs of the day

It would appear that this is a sketchy point.
My research shows that the eye to eye distance is 330mm to 350mm.

Eye to eye.

Hi Pete,
The eye to eye dimension refers to the centre of the mounting bolt at the top of the shock to the centre of the mounting bolt at the bottom of the shock.

Hi HL,
The points are a good thing so my research has turned up.
You can still get points and condensers for them if needed.

Most replace the Jikov Carb with a Mikuni 34mm.

I agree the points are user friendy,  but the carby is on the way out in the next week or so.  HL

Through my own issues and others knowledge, the windings are an problem, not so much the points. The windings start to get movement in the mounting posts which in turn lead to ignition failures. At the moment, dads cz runs points as he has a good set of windings. I had intermittent problems on mine until i forked out for the cdi. Thats the way to go.

Thanks 090,
I have a new set of points, capacitor, coil and windings coming from the States.
This is a temp solution because of the rising cost of all the parts needed on my bike. I will be purchasing a CDI system in the future for my CZ but at $695.00AUD it will have to wait.

Thanks Ji

Hi HL400,
Check your shoes.
Mine were covered in oil and grease.
I think the last owner sprayed oil on the hubs to keep them from rotting and the oil went through to the shoes.

Good to hear it went well.

BRAD
you can get the coils rewound much cheper than cdi.there is a guy in southern nsw that can do it and also a guy in brisbane as well.the guy in nsw redid my cr250 stator and the bike starts 2nd kick cold and first warm.also the motor is new.

Thanks jimg1au,
This is all good stuff.
My coils test alright at this time so I will give it ago with points. The ignition coil, new points, new capacitor and top flywheel coil only cost $30.00USD so why not see how it goes after all there was a lot of world titles won using points.

Hi 090,
I hear you brother.
Unfortunately the restore on my CZ is costing more than I have due to the dollar exchange rate and airmail from the States has also gone up.
I will run the bike this season on points until I can afford the $700.00AUD for a CDI system.
At this stage all I want to do is have it ready for CD6 but if I cut the CDI from the budget I may be able to have it racing in 3 weeks if I can get an expansion chamber. Before someone tells me to try GMC, I contacted GMC yesterday and was informed that they are a bit busy for the next 5 weeks and so I would have to wait for them to manufacture one so I may have to unflatten the old one.

Keep well
Ji
